Skeletonized Magazine Retention from S&S Precision

SMR

Back in late September we gave you a sneak peek at S&S Precision’s Skeletonized Magazine Retention. This video gives you some additional info as well as depicts quite well how it wears and works. If you want some history on the system, head back over to the original article.

Yeah, back then we messed with you a little bit by not disclosing any info on the DUST-E which protects the top of the magazine when it’s inserted into the SMR. It’s not that we didn’t want to tell you, but rather, S&S precision wasn’t quite ready to show everything. They had a valid concern that it would be knocked off before SHOT Show. I’ve got to say, it’s pretty entertaining watching guys go on and on, putting something down that they haven’t seen in person. It’s even funnier when you tell them that it’s covered and they just can’t stop talking about it (Ok, I’ll admit it, it did hit a point where it was annoying). So, the rest of the story is that they had the upside down open top magazine issue covered all along and the answer is the DUST-E which is an insert for the SMR. In fact, I photographed the very items seen in this video for the sneak peek article. They literally left the next day for the photo shoot.

All-in-all it’s a cool system and can be used without a PlateFrame with their new Rhodesian Rig, MOLLE adapters and Belt Adapters. Before you ask, that’s ODG camo.

FirstSpear Friday Focus – Offering 50% Discount on MOLLE Products

Friday, January 31st, 2014

20140131-042630.jpg

While supplies last, FirstSpear is offering all existing MOLLE style platforms and pockets at a 50% off discount on their website. Supplies are limited and backorders will not be accepted. This is an AWESOME DEAL for anyone who must use MOLLE equipment, primarily uses his or her equipment on the range or is looking for a low cost backup system. MOLLE remains popular and still the most widely used system on the market due to cost and availability.

MOLLE is still viable, it’s just that something better has come along. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the MOLLE products that FirstSpear is closing out. These are not factory seconds. Everything is first quality and dealers have already had an opportunity to pick these up so they aren’t undermining anyone with this sale. FirstSpear related that they would produce MOLLE pouches if they received a contract, but that they would no longer stock the items for commercial sale. So you’d better act now. Instead, they’ve got a couple of alternatives that have been around awhile but have really started to take off. Now, they want to move forward exclusively with their 6/9™ attachment system which is completely backwards compatible with PALS/MOLLE and an even better set up, the 6/12™ Pocket Attachment System.

“We started FirstSpear to continuously push innovation and move the industry forward in support of the Warfighter, Tactical Law Enforcement Officer, and First Responder. Now that the technologies we pioneered a few years ago have proven themselves on the battlefield and in the street, discontinuing the old stuff is a no-brainer,” said Scott Carver, President & CEO of FirstSpear.

So you may be asking yourself, “What’s better than MOLLE?” As the first company to take traditional MOLLE/PALS style platforms and pockets out of their stocking line, FirstSpear looks toward the future and their 6/12™ Pocket Attachment System. You’ve seen numerous new laser cut load carrying products out there but FirstSpear’s is different. They’ve gone beyond offering a laser cut version of MOLLE.

I spoke with Ronnie Fowlkes, Director of Business Development at FirstSpear about the move and this is what he had to say, “Customers have been rapidly adopting our new technologies so quickly, that it doesn’t make sense to keep offering an outdated system. The 6/9™ Modular Pocket Technology is lighter weight than the old stuff and is backwards compatible with MOLLE-style platforms, and the 6/12 technology offers the best in weight reduction, profile management, security, and flexibility.”

As you’re going to see, the 6/12™ Pocket Attachment System is unlike anything else out there.

Weight! There are several philosophies on dealing with weight as it applies to load carriage. Some development has occurred in lightweight materials, but these tend to sacrifice performance. Other developments have taken place in “load transfer” by shifting weight around, but they reduce flexibility while increasing heat retention, bulk and even overall load. FirstSpear™ has taken a different approach. We listened to the Users and decided to eliminate the weight and sacrifice nothing. In the design assessment of current pouch attachment systems, FirstSpear™ recognized that the major weight parasite on both the platforms and the attaching pockets is the yards of bulk nylon, snaps and polymer stiffener. The FirstSpear™ 6/12™ technology eliminates these components and achieves a 20%-40% reduction in weight per standard Assaulter configuration when compared to current pocket attachment systems. The FirstSpear™ team invested more than a year developing and testing the FirstSpear™ 6/12™ Pocket Attachment System. It utilizes state of the art fabric technologies to deliver a completely modular system, compatible with standard MOLLE pockets. From adhesive heat-set backing to laser cut precision attachment points, the 6/12™ system is a completely new, design-engineered solution that meets the need for modular, lightweight load-carriage platforms and pockets. Additionally, 6/12™ provides greater fabric flexibility on unarmored platforms and tighter mounting of pockets to create a cleaner silhouette that aides in enhanced signature management and mobility. The 6/12™ platform face is completely slick when pockets are removed and allows for easy management of communications cables and wires.

Don’t transfer the weight, get rid of it.

FirstSpear™ 6/12™ Modular Pocket Technology

6-12 backer

Modular Pockets Compatible with FirstSpear™ 6/12™ Platforms – Weight reduction is not just a buzz phrase at FirstSpear™ – it is an ethos demonstrated by the 6/12™ pocket line. Utilizing these pockets on FirstSpear™ 6/12™ platforms allows the wearer to achieve a weight reduction of over 40% without sacrificing performance. By removing the heavy nylon webbing, polymer reinforcement and metal snaps of the previous system, not only is weight reduced, but the overall profile of the pocket on the platform is significantly condensed as well, allowing improved signature management in all visual, IR and thermal spectrums.

FirstSpear™ 6/9™ Modular Pocket Technology

6-9 attachment

Developed specifically for those Users who have not yet adopted FirstSpear™ 6/12™ platforms, the 6/9™ Modular Pocket Technology is not only completely backward compatible with legacy MOLLE/PALS style load carriage or armor carrier platforms, but also offers significant weight reduction over traditional MOLLE/PALS pockets. Due to the flexible nature of the attachment straps and tighter tolerances when compared to traditional MOLLE/PALS, 6/9™ pockets actually mount closer to the body and conform tighter to the platform. Already adopted by Professional Users within the joint US Special Operations Forces community, this system provides many advantages over the traditional MOLLE/PALS system and can further help facilitate transition into the 6/12™ Modular Pocket Technology where the ultimate in weight savings, signature management and tight fit can be achieved.

Hidesight-corner-shooting

The Hidesight is an add on device for 1x red dot and holographic weapon sights that enables the user to view the sight picture of the sight while staying hidden behind shielding obstacles. It projects a non-magnifying, non-inverted “true image” view of the sight, through one of three selectable viewing modes: normal, side view, and trench. The Hidesight mounts to a picatinny rail, and is designed so it can be offset from the sighting path without detaching from the weapon. A dual mechanism safety feature prevents accidental opening of the frames during normal weapon handling, the weapon falling, or when the weapon in storage. The optical panels are easily cleaned in a field environment, and can be replaced without specific tools if they are broken.

The Iowa Suppressor Ownership Bill Needs Your Support

Thursday, January 30th, 2014

Our friends at the American Silencer Association have asked us to spread the word on a pending bill that would allow citizens of Iowa to possess suppressors. As a native of that great state that values liberty, it’s something near to my heart.

Last week, State Rep. Matt Windschitl, (R-Missouri Valley) introduced House File 384 to the Iowa State House. The purpose of the bill is to legalize the possession of suppressors for the law abiding citizens of Iowa who complete the proper Federal NFA transfer process.

Iowa is currently one of only 11 states that prohibit the possession of suppressors by civilians. For a full map, visit the ASA’s website.
Although HF 384 is moving through the General Assembly, it needs your support to pass.

Please contact members of the Iowa State House and Senate TODAY and urge them to support the legalization of suppressor ownership in Iowa. Contact information can be found below:
