DSEI – Steyr Mannlicher STM 556

Monday, September 21st, 2015

Steyr Mannlicher continues to exhibit their short piston take on the AR style carbine which first debuted in 2012. Unfortunately, it seems that it remains in development with further refinements still to come.

The one-piece upper integrates the railed forend. As you can see, this upper design offers a quick swap barrel feature. There are four gas regulator settings: Standard, Extreme Condition, Silencer, and Cut Off.  Additionally, it incorporates a dry film lubricant.

The four bolts in the upper reciever are associated with steel guide rail inserts for the dry film lubricant system.

The weapon can be loaded and unloaded with the weapon on safe.  There’s no need to pull the hammer to the rear in order to place the weapon on safe.  According to the man at the booth, the production version will sport a new butt stock and magazine by Steyr.

Stuff I Like – SplashMaps

Sunday, September 20th, 2015

During my recent visit to England for DSEI, I picked up a Wearable SplashMap of central London. It featured every street I needed, including what essentially were alleyways between major streets. Plus, it was easy to stuff in my pocket yet pull right out and use. No crazy map folding skills needed here.

Inspired by silk escape maps, Wearable Maps can be worn as a scarf or stuffed in a pocket. They won’t wrinkle and there’s no stretch. You can even write on them with Crayola washable markers and was the map clean later. They are printed on weatherproof, colorfast satin and are 72cm x 72cm.

In addition to a wide variety of ready made cloth maps featuring popular international destinations, SplashMaps will custom make a map for you (Make-a-Map), using native digital sources such as Ordnance Survey, OpenStreetMap and US Geological Survey. Maps of the UK are generally 1:25 000 scale and international maps 1:40 000. You even get to pick the title. Naturally, they’ll do limited runs for events such as races or training as well.

Badger Ordnance – Coaxial Laser Range Finder Mount

Sunday, September 20th, 2015

LRF-1

Badger Ordnance’s Coaxial Laser Range Finder Mount (CRFM) is a designed to facilitate integration of rail mounted Laser Range Finding Systems to a weapon outfitted with a long range optic. Machined from 6061 alloy and MilSpec Type III hardcoat anodized, the CRFM is compatible with all Badger Ordnance Rings and Unimounts, and utilizes the existing scope ring cap mounted in the 6 o’clock position. The height of the CRFM is balanced to clear the objective lens on most optics, keeping the profile of the device low yet still providing an unobtrusive view of the data window. Additionally, the CRFM also allows for the use of other M1913 compatible accessories, such as a micro red dot optic or laser aiming device.

Mexico Marines Have Selected US4CES Transitional Camo; Have Renamed The Pattern Marina Trans Jungle

Sunday, September 20th, 2015

Hyperstealth has announced that the Naval Infantry of Mexico has selected the US4CES Transitional camo pattern for their uniforms, and have renamed the pattern Marina Trans Jungle. Objective tests were performed in three environments, Lowland Forest in Michoacan, Lowland Scrub Desert in Sinaloa, and Riparian Forest in Coahuila, which pitted the US4CES Transitional pattern against the current Digital Woodland pattern used by the Mexican Marines.

In all three environments, it took observers an overall longer period of time to locate the US4CES pattern than the currently fielded Woodland pattern. A second comparison was conducted, comparing the US4CES pattern to MultiCam in the same environments, again with the US4CES pattern taking an overall longer period of time to locate within the environments.
