Thursday, June 28th, 2018

BRISTOL, Ind. – The National Rifle Association is pleased to announce the sponsors for the 2018 NRA National Smallbore Rifle Championship, scheduled for July 18-30, 2018, at Chief Wa-Ke’-De Rifle Range in Bristol, Indiana. This year’s sponsors include Lapua, Ruger, SK, Champion’s Choice, ELEY, FN America, Krieger Barrels, Lauer Custom Weaponry, O.F. Mossberg & Sons and Otis Technology.

The NRA National Matches build upon a century of shooting sports heritage and traditions, and for the fourth year the NRA National Smallbore Championships will bring the legacy and excitement of the prestigious competitive shooting match to Chief Wa-Ke’-De Range, just 200 miles north of Camp Atterbury and 160 miles west of Camp Perry.

The nation’s finest civilian and military marksmen will convene on Chief Wa-Ke’-De Range’s 100 covered firing points ranges for nearly two weeks of smallbore rifle competition in a variety of formats. The matches will once again include Conventional Prone, Conventional Three-Position, Metric Prone and Metric Three-Position Championships, wherein competitors shoot Metallic Sights, Any Sights, and Team Matches. This year the championship will also feature Smallbore F-Class matches as a new addition to the lineup.

Just before the Smallbore Championships, Bristol will also host the NRA Junior Smallbore Camp scheduled for July 14-18, 2018. Relocated from Ohio and celebrating its inaugural year at Chief Wa-Ke’-De Range, the camp’s new location will offer all of the same excellent intermediate camp experiences for high school age students, along with several new and exciting additions. This year’s NRA Junior Smallbore Camp will be sponsored by SK. SK will provide product support during the NRA Junior Smallbore Camp and continue to support junior shooters during the NRA/SK Mentor Match at the NRA Smallbore Rifle Championships.

Tripwire Operations Group Launches F.I.R.S.T. Division

New Division Challenges the Status Quo of Current Homicide Investigation Practices, Teaches Outdoor Crime Scene Reconstruction
Gettysburg, PA – June 28, 2018 – Tripwire Operations Group announces the launch of its all-new F.I.R.S.T. Division. F.I.R.S.T. – Forensic. Investigation. Research. Services. Training. – offers a variety of short courses in the areas of forensic anthropology, outdoor crime scene reconstruction, forensic scene mapping, mass disaster scene processing, disaster morgue protocols, cold case reviews, and scene mapping of actual forensic scenes. F.I.R.S.T. courses challenge the current crime scene investigation status quo and instead teach the importance of crime scene reconstruction to fully understand how a death event occurred. The Division is run by forensic anthropology and archaeology consultants for Tripwire Operations Group, Dennis Dirkmaat, Ph.D., D-ABFA, and FBI Special Agent Michael Hochrein (ret).

“We’re proud to have Dennis and Mike as a part of the team at Tripwire. They’re the best at what they do and are giving medical examiners and first responders a more accurate way to conduct an outdoor homicide investigation,” said Ryan J. Morris, owner, Tripwire Operations Group. “There’s no one else out there bringing this type and level of training to first responders. The F.I.R.S.T. Division is a natural expansion for us as we continue to set the standard for high-quality training for first responders across the country and internationally.”

Dirkmaat and Hochrein take a different approach to outdoor crime scene reconstruction and homicide investigation, going beyond standard law enforcement procedures to put crime scenes into context.

“There are simply too many ‘agents,’ such as animals, weather, water, snow, and humans, at an outdoor crime scene that can alter evidence after a death event takes place. And each manipulation of that evidence, be it from animals or weather or other factors, can have a profound effect on the types of conclusions we can draw, and further, may impact our understanding of how that individual died,” explained Dirkmaat. “We’re here to educate and inform law enforcement officers and medical examiners as to the importance of reconstructing, and thereby fully understanding, an outdoor crime scene.”

A recently completed F.I.R.S.T. Division course taught to a group of medical examiners from Kazakhstan is currently featured on the Tripwire blog. Visit the blog to learn more about this group of students and the best practices they’re returning home to implement.

F.I.R.S.T Division courses are scheduling now for Fall 2018. For more information and to register, visit: tripwireops.org/events.

The Summit Experience – Day 4

Thursday, June 28th, 2018

Once again, we arose to another fun-filled day at SBR. After a breakfast of French toast sticks, eggs and sausage patties we raised the flags and recited the Pledge of Allegiance, Scout Oath and Scout Law.

Today, our agenda included Barrels with its shooting sports focus and Bows, which features archery.

The hike to Barrels took quite awhile due to both distance and elevation changes along the route.

During our orientation, we went over the NRA’s three rules of firearms safety. Next, the instructor went over the principles of marksmanship, eye dominance and general range admin.

First up was shooting clays. The shotguns we used were MX5 12 ga Automatics by Turkish manufacturer Emperor Firearms.

Next, we transitioned to rifles. We fired .22 Savage Mk II rifles equipped with Weaver 4-9x or Bushnell 4-9x scopes at bullseye paper and various steel targets to gain confidence. Next we moved to a 100 yd Steel target range where we fired Savage Axis rifles in .223 and .308.

We ate lunch of cold cuts at Barrels due to its distance from the dining hall and then hiked to Bows.

After a brief introduction by the Bows team which included archery fundamentals and safety, we were issued 20 lbs Matthews Genesis compound bows and split into two groups. One group went to the 40/60 Range, engaging static targets at 40 and 60 meters respectively. The other group went to shoot at 3D animal targets in the woods from close although unknown, distances and angles. Can you see the 3D targets in this photo?

This photo depicts the types of targets the archers engaged. The dinosaurs were only in the 40/60 Range.

At the static range they engaged targets at 10m while playing ‘bake the cake’ which is a competition where an archer has five arrows and must hit white (flours), blue (water), red (heat) and yellow (eggs), but not black which burns the cake. In the event an archer burns his cake, he can burn others by shooting into an opponent’s black ring.

EF4CC771-58D5-4E9C-BA6D-EF99EFCD0539

Action archery consisted of thrown targets similar to sporting clays, with all of the archers attempting to hit the target. Can you see the target and arrows in this photo?

Whether first timers or old hands, skills were learned or improved and fun was had by all.

We wrapped up the day with a hike back to base camp for a dinner of Slaw Dogs, Chicken and Dumplings with cornbread and green beans.

Tomorrow is Mountain Biking and the Big Zip!
