Safariland Announces New Hardwire Armor Packages

Innovative Design Offers Lightest, Thinnest Ballistic Panel Protection Available

Jacksonville, Florida – Safariland®, a brand of The Safariland Group®, a leading global provider of safety products designed for the public safety, military, professional and outdoor markets, announced today the next generation of Hardwireâ Ballistic Panels. Hardwire optimizes the strength of compressed Dyneema fibers to create the thinnest and lightest level II and IIIA ballistic panels available.

“The collaboration between Safariland and Hardwire will continue to bring advanced armor protection to end users,” James Duncan, VP/GM of Armor for Safariland said. “This strategic relationship incorporates the thinnest, lightest and highest performing armor panels into our state of the art tactical and concealable vests. Hardwire is an exceptional company that shares Safariland’s vision, and together we are learning how to maximize the effectiveness of armor and how to protect those who serve.”

“Hardwire’s advanced ballistic properties afford the bullet’s shock wave more time to spread out before getting to the body,” George Tunis, CEO of Hardwire LLC, said. “The panel is 100% Dyneema, but it’s more than material alone that makes it work. It’s the Hardwire process and strategic layering of the materials that results in game-changing performance. We use a bullet’s own rotation and exploitable weaknesses to shock the projectile into submission. Meaning, the bullet doesn’t attack the vest, the vest attacks the bullet.”

The second generation Hardwire Ballistic Panel offers the thinnest profile available in soft body armor while weighing just .51 and .68 pounds per square foot for level II and IIIA, respectively. This minimalist design allows for Hardwire Armor to be worn all day without interfering with routine tasks. Hardwire panels stand up to a range of special threat rounds above NIJ standard and the technology was originally developed for use by the elite U.S Special Operations Command and Marine Corps.

Safariland Armor continues to lead through innovation and design that sets the standard in ballistic protection. By continuing to bring cutting-edge body armor designs to market, Safariland provides its customers with high-performance, life-saving armor systems.

By combining Safariland’s proprietary ballistic panel shapes with carrier systems designed to maximize both comfort and protection, this next generation Hardwire ballistic technology takes ballistic protection to a new level. These new Hardwire Level II and Level IIIA ballistic panels will be available for use in all of Safariland’s concealable and tactical vest designs and platforms.

The partnership between Safariland and Hardwire offers a new standard in shock dissipation physics, momentum transfer efficiency, and ultimately, ballistic protection. Taking a round should not be the end of the fight. With the goal of enhanced survivability and minimized injury, Safariland and Hardwire are designed to save the lives of first responders.

USAF to Allow Longer Braids, Ponytails, Bangs for Women

Friday, January 22nd, 2021

As an outcome of the 101st Air Force uniform board, Air Force women will be able to wear their hair in up to two braids or a single ponytail with bulk not exceeding the width of the head and length not extending below a horizontal line running between the top of each sleeve inseam at the under arm through the shoulder blades. In addition, women’s bangs may now touch their eyebrows, but not cover their eyes.

These new changes will be effective upon publication of the new standards in Air Force Instruction 36-2903 in February.

“As I outlined in Action Order A: Airmen, this decision is a commitment to supporting the Airmen We Need and sustaining the culture and environment of excellence that will continue to make the Air Force an attractive career choice for Airmen and families,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr. “I’m thankful for the feedback and research conducted from a number of women leaders, the Women’s Initiative Team, the Air Force uniform board, and our joint teammates.”

The Air Force uniform board convened virtually in November 2020 to discuss ideas sourced from Airmen across the Air Force who participated in a dress and appearance crowdsourcing campaign. Participants on the board included 19 diverse Airmen of various ranks from across the major commands and headquarters directorates.

The board reviewed all ideas including a recommendation from the Air Force’s Women’s Initiative Team. Thousands of women across the Air Force provided feedback to the Women’s Initiative Team, stating constraints to hair grooming standards resulted in damage to hair, migraines and in some cases, hair loss. The detailed work done by the Women’s Initiative Team to research and support the recommendation was greatly appreciated by the uniform board.

“In addition to the health concerns we have for our Airmen, not all women have the same hair type, and our hair standards should reflect our diverse force,” said Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass. “I am pleased we could make this important change for our women service members.”

In addition to addressing issues associated with personal health and hair loss, adjusting female hair standards supports ongoing efforts to address diversity and inclusion in the ranks. Earlier this year and in her role leading the Defense Department’s Diversity Board, then-Secretary of the Air Force Barbara M. Barrett played a prominent role in supporting these types of adjustments to ensure a more inclusive culture in the services.

The Air Force chief of staff approved the policy after considering feedback from the force, the uniform board recommendation, and the professional image and standards of the Air Force and U.S. military.

“We remain committed to removing barriers to service,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, Air Force deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services. “In an all-volunteer force, we want fully qualified volunteers who are representative of the nation to see us as a great opportunity to maximize their talent and serve.”

Members must adhere to current occupational safety, fire and health guidance, and mishap prevention procedures emphasizing when and how to mitigate the potential for injury from hair of varying lengths around machinery, equipment, power transmission apparatus or moving parts. Airmen are encouraged to reach out to their safety office for assistance in analyzing any potential hazards, as applicable.

Another idea considered by the board related to beard wear for men. Unlike with women’s hair standards, there are no known health or hair loss issues associated with current male grooming standard compliance. As such, the Air Force plans to continue under the current male grooming standards without adjustments. Beards are currently permitted in conjunction with medical exceptions such as shaving waivers or for approved religious accommodations.

At this time, Guardians will adhere to the female grooming standards of the Air Force. Eventually, the U.S. Space Force will develop its own policy.

Numerous other ideas from the board are still under consideration for implementation and will be released in the future. For more information, consult AFI 36-2903 Dress and Appearance.

Rock River Arms Announces First Precision Bolt Rifles

Friday, January 22nd, 2021

Colona, IL – Rock River Arms, one of the industry’s most respected name in Modern Sporting Rifles and pistols, enters the long-range bolt rifle category with the introduction of the all-new RBG Bolt Gun series.

The RBG series bolt rifles are designed to deliver a turn-key precision rifle suitable for long-range shooting and competition. Based on RRA’s proprietary short-action stainless steel receiver and a Wilson (stainless-steel barrel (offered in 24-inch, 22-inch or 20-inch models), the RBG Bolt Gun is available in .308/7.62×51 and 6.5 Creedmoor chambering. The barrel is air-gauged for bore diameter uniformity and cryo-treated to ensure structural consistency.

The barreled action sits in a KRG chassis, which was chosen for its lean profile and precision aluminum bedding. Toolless field adjustability provides a custom fit in any shooting condition. The chassis is compatible with AICS-style detachable box magazines and is ideally suited for multiple long-range shooting disciplines. Color options include tan, black, and green.

Rounding out the action assembly is a one piece, interchangeable two-lug bolt cycled by an oversized knurled bolt handle. The two-lug bolt design provides a smooth action when cycling and features an easy-access external bolt release. Beneath the action is a short-travel Triggertech trigger, or option of a Timney trigger, with adjustable pull weight and a crisp, zero-creep break.

Included with the RBG is a 20 MOA base. This allows the scope to be zeroed to prevent elevation runout for long-distance targets. Standard scope base holes are drilled into the receiver for shooters who desire conventional ring mounts.

Weighing a modest 10.2 pounds with an empty magazine, the RBG Bolt Gun measures 39.5-inches to 43.5-inches in length and is guaranteed by the factory to shoot sub-MOA groups.

Thursday, January 21st, 2021

Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE: RGR) is pleased to introduce the Ruger Precision® Rifle chambered in 6mm Creedmoor as the newest addition to the Ruger Custom Shop® line of firearms. Designed in collaboration with Team Ruger Captain, Doug Koenig, this new model builds upon the already competitive Ruger Precision Rifle to deliver a factory-built firearm specifically designed for long-range competition.

The new Custom Shop Ruger Precision Rifle features a factory-installed TriggerTech Trigger with Frictionless Release TechnologyTM providing an exceptionally crisp break, minimized overtravel and an extremely short and tactile reset. A unique barrier stop is installed on the front of the magazine well to enhance the shooter’s positional support during competition by providing a stable and repeatable shooting position. Internally, the rifle boasts an improved firing pin tip geometry that enhances functionality with a wide variety of primers while allowing for decreased force necessary to manipulate the bolt.

This rifle’s custom, heavy-contour (.850″ at the muzzle), highly accurate free-floated barrel is cold hammer-forged from chrome-molly stainless steel and features 5R rifling for minimum bullet upset. Minimum bore and groove dimensions (air-gauged for process control) and a centralized chamber deliver outstanding accuracy, longevity and ease of cleaning. The barrel features a 1:7” twist rate, 5/8”-24 threaded muzzle and APA Muzzle Brake (.264 bore) to effectively reduce recoil aiding shot observation for quick follow-up.

Encompassing the stainless steel barrel is a hard-coat anodized aluminum, free-float handguard that features M-LOK® slots on all four sides for improved clearance for long-range scopes and easy mounting of M-LOK-compatible rails and accessories. The handguard is flat bottomed for stability and incorporates an integral bottom 1.50” dovetail, making the gun compatible with RRS S.O.A.R. and similar QD systems.

With its ability to accept AR-style grips and buttstocks, the rifle incorporates a Magpul® MOE® K2+ grip to provide a more vertical grip angle in a full-sized design. Select parts of the rifle are finished with a durable Cerakote® for improved wear resistance. This model ships with two Magpul PMAG® magazines and a Sorbothane® cheek pad that provides a comfortable and stable cheek-to-stock weld for quick target acquisition.

The value proposition of the Ruger Custom Shop Precision Rifle in 6mm Creedmoor is without peer. With top-tier accuracy, adjustable ergonomics and the rugged reliability and affordability for which Ruger is famous, this new offering provides a long-range, competition-ready rifle directly from the Ruger factory.
