Artillery Ammo Deal to Deliver Ongoing Capability Edge

Tuesday, June 13th, 2023

NIOA has confirmed an extended partnership with Defence which it says will “future proof” supply surety of advanced artillery rounds for the Australian Army.

At a time of unprecedented worldwide demand for 155mm ammunition, the Australian-owned Defence prime has locked in another five-year term to supply the Assegai suite of munitions under the LAND 17-1C.2 Future Artillery Ammunition (FAA) program.

The modular Assegai ammunition system of projectiles, propelling charges, fuzes and primers can be configured in many ways to increase lethality and range for training and operational purposes.

Over the past five years, NIOA and supply partners JUNGHANS Microtec GmbH, Nitrochemie Aschau GmbH and Rheinmetall Denel Munitions have worked in close collaboration with Defence to deliver and integrate this artillery system into the Army’s M777A2 howitzers and are preparing for integration into K9 Protected Mobile Fires platforms.

Projectile variants include conventional HE, Insensitive Munition High Explosive (IHE), IHE Pre-Fragmented (PFF), screening smoke, illumination (infrared and visual), base-bleed and Extended Range Velocity Enhance (V-LAP), practice and inert projectiles.

A key recommendation of the recent Defence Strategic Review (DSR) was to accelerate and shore up supply of critical munitions and projectiles which have been included in a $2.5b investment in Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO).

Reliable sources such as the joint venture Rheinmetall NIOA Munitions (RNM) shell forging factory in Maryborough, Queensland, which recently shipped its first consignment of export 155mm shells to Germany, are likely to become more critical.

NIOA Australia and New Zealand CEO Ben James welcomed the LAND 17-1C.2 deed extension, saying the new partnership would capitalise on a highly successful LAND 17 Program and a key period for ADF capability.

“The LAND 17 FAA program will deliver a step change in reach, coverage and flexibility for the ADF’s artillery capability,” he said.

“NIOA welcomes this significant deed extension and looks forward to working with Defence to deliver against accelerated preparedness objectives.

“The DSR identified the need to rapidly acquire additional ammunition stocks from existing suppliers and contractors and rapidly establish a domestic GWEO manufacturing capability.

“This LAND 17 deed extension provides the opportunity for NIOA to deliver on both of these objectives for Government and for the ADF.”

Enhancing Lethality: US Army Marksmanship Unit’s Instructor Training Group Empowers Soldiers

Tuesday, June 13th, 2023

EWA BEACH, Hawaii- The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit’s Instructor Training Group taught advanced marksmanship training to Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment May 8-19 2023. The training built upon the foundation of basic marksmanship skills.

The Instructor Training Group is comprised of experienced combat veterans who provide tailorable marksmanship training courses to operational units globally. They provide training to Soldiers of all ability levels that meet the commander’s operational needs, while also supporting the USAMU’s mission to improve small arms lethality.

“I’ve learned a ton, a lot of this week refined our basic marksmanship skills,” said Sgt. Joe Calkin, an Orlando native and sniper team leader assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2-35IN. “Everything we’ve learned will be able to translate to our Soldiers and increase our organization’s lethality.”

The training focused on both pistol and rifle marksmanship, refining the shooter’s form, grip, stance, trigger control, draw speed and accuracy.

“One of the most beneficial things for me was adjusting my shooting stance, with just a small change I was able to exponentially increase my stability and increase my accuracy. Small changes I learned here made me a better shooter,” said Calkin.

Emphasis was placed on consistency and eliminating any unnecessary movements that can affect accuracy. Practicing these fundamentals in a controlled environment lays the groundwork for more complex and demanding shooting scenarios.

“Developing my shooting skills with subject matter experts is a great experience and I would highly recommend it to any Soldier out there,” said Calkin. “If you get a chance to take a course from USAMU, do it.”

In 2022, the USAMU conducted 33 MTTs (Mobile Training Teams) at military installations, including four events training 50 drill sergeants. Each MTT is 5 to 10 days and includes an initial marksmanship assessment, classroom instruction, practical exercises, and a final evaluation to measure improvements in shooting metrics and knowledge. Training is tailored to the unit’s needs, focusing on basic rifle marksmanship with the M-4 carbine and the M-17 pistol. The average cost is $50 per Soldier to conduct world-class instruction, a cost that cannot be replicated in the DoD. MTTs are a force multiplier for partner units, institutional organizations, and division-level marksmanship assets to build the Army’s lethality program through spreading expertise and relevant knowledge with emerging technologies.

Instructor Training Group Soldiers conducted 76 lethality missions in 2022, improving over 2,340 Soldiers’ lethal hit rates by 40 percent in support of the unit’s mission to enhance lethality to enable the Army to win on a complex, competitive battlefield.

SOFWERX – SOF Space 2040 Event

Monday, June 12th, 2023

SOFWERX, in collaboration USSOCOM J59 Concept Development and Integration – Experimentation (J59 CDI-E) will host a Table-Top Exercise (TTX) 26-27 July 2023, in Orlando, FL, which intends to bring together Industry, Academia, Government, and futurists in an exploration, design thinking, facilitated event to assist USSOCOM in decomposing future scenarios and missions. The theme of the TTX is “SOF Space 2040: Integrating SOF into the Space Domain”.

There have been rapid and transformative developments in the Space Domain, with many countries increasing their investments and interest in space, growth in new technologies and platforms, and significant activity from commercial players. These developments range from an exponential deployment of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO); to more capable launch vehicles and spacecraft with greater payloads; and planned missions to exploit cislunar space and colonize the Moon and Mars. The number of space-related applications is far-reaching and includes communications, imaging, mining, manufacturing, exploration, tourism, scientific research, intelligence, military power, and human settlement.

The event will be a compelling opportunity for leading minds in Industry, Academia, Labs, and Government, as well as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to collaborate and ideate with other experts.

By participating, you will join a diverse group of experts in fields including space, defense, technology, gaming, manufacturing, robotics, science fiction, and international relations, and human factors who will gather to paint a picture of how you see the space domain in 2040, identify what challenges and opportunities could arise, and discuss how any challenges could be addressed.

You will network with other experts and use design thinking to explore concepts from future technology areas. The TTX is not limited to SOF-specific solutions; however, the outputs of the event should be aligned and/or designed to support USSOCOM operations when envisioning new mission sets for future Special Operations Forces (SOF) personnel in Space – whether on earth, on orbit, in cislunar space, on the lunar surface, or elsewhere.

If you are an expert in any of the following areas of interest or in related fields, please consider participating in the TTX.

Grip Force Extended Base Pad

Monday, June 12th, 2023

Conventional extended base pads primarily have a square or rectangular shape. Their designs mostly consist of flat or slightly angled surface areas on all sides and a flat section on the bottom. These designs are not ergonomic. They do not provide proper surface contact and feedback to the shooter during the reload sequence.

The advanced ergonomic design of the Grip Force EBP resolves all of these issues of conventional extended base pads.

The Grip Force EBP is the result of ergonomic evolution. When developing the Grip Force EBP, we studied the exact manner in how the human hand operates during a reload sequence. How the hand indexes the base pad and magazine in its pouch. How it wraps around the base pad and magazine body when removing the magazine. How it orients the magazine toward the magazine well, and how the hand functions when inserting, seating, and locking the magazine into the pistol.

The Grip Force EBP is designed to work with the hand naturally. The result is optimized speed and efficiency of the reload sequence.

FIT = FUNCTION

The EBP design allows for a faster and more consistent index.

The EBP fits the hand better, increasing feel and control.

The extended and contoured underside remains in contact with the hand during reloads. That continuous hand contact increases speed and efficiency.

The Grip Force EBP can be used on Standard (G17/G22) or Compact (G19/G23) sized magazines. The Grip Force EBP increases magazine capacity by +5 rounds of 9mm and +4 rounds of .40 cal.

Additional features include:

• Ambidextrous indented side panels enhance the operation for immediate action drills.

• A reinforced 3-pin locking bridge offers additional security against the base pad separating from the magazine body.

• The ergonomic shape of the EBP aids in concealed carry; the base pad design prints less underneath clothing.

• The ergonomic shape of the EBP offers an enhanced grip surface for compact (G19-sized) pistols.

• The EBP has a non-glare finish, suitable for MIL/LE duty use.
