StatGear – LEDGE Slip-Joint Pocket Knife

Monday, February 18th, 2019

H0H6TgtF

The LEDGE is an EDC pocket knife desgined by Brooklyn-based StatGear, and is currently up for funding on Kickstarter. Designed as a modern take on the classic, non-locking slip-joint folding knife, the LEDGE features a D2 steel blade with a modified sheepsfoot profile, and an extended nail nick that runs along the spine of the blade for easier opening. The handle is made of textured G10 scales for a positive grip, with a dual-layer inlay that gives the knife a distinct look. The LEDGE is finished with a reversible pocketclip, which allow for a deep, tip up carry on the user’s preferred side.

While a non-locking mechanism may seem a bit outdated, one of the main benefits of StatGear having designed the LEDGE with a slip-joint action is that it is legal in countries like Canada and the UK that have more stringent laws regarding carry knives.

Corps Strength – Walk it off

Saturday, February 2nd, 2019

Since my book Corps Strength came out, I couldn’t count how many people have related their experiences with fitness, diet and weight loss to me. They tell me about their latest efforts, ask for advice, bounce off ideas and share their success/non-success. I have always really liked to hear these stories, as I learned a long time ago to get my gouge (on any subject) from actual people, with real life experience. About 90% of what I wrote in my book was based on either my own personal experience, or from the first hand accounts of others. The other 10% is from what I’ve read. The point is I don’t buy into any hyped program stats, airbrushed advertising pictures or those amazing diet ads. I could fill another book with all that crap. One common thing I’ve heard from literally hundreds of people is that they just want to get in better shape and lose some weight. The vast majority don’t care about doing a SEAL workout, running a marathon, climbing mountains, having six pack abs, etc. Most people just want to look their best, be active, healthy and injury free. That may sound like a low bar for many people, myself included. But, sadly most of the people in this country aren’t clearing that low bar. Many millions in fact are obese, sick and from all that, have serve limits on their lifestyle.

Putting eating habits aside, many people nowadays, (especially age 40+) have health problems that prevent them from participating in a vigorous exercise program, or even an active lifestyle. When they do attempt a workout program, it almost never lasts. They just burnout and/or get injured and quit. I’ve seen this movie way too many times. Sad really, as I know that most go into these things with the best of hopes and intentions. So when I’m asked for advice from people in these circumstances, I always recommend just one simple thing in the area of exercise: Walking. Walking is by far the best low impact exercise out there, especially for people that are overweight. Many people say swimming is the best, but I don’t buy it. Yes, swimming burns calories and is no doubt low impact, but it’s logistically hard to do and most people don’t know how to swim well enough to get the benefit. Just splashing around is a waste of time. For the average person walking is a much better choice and you need no special skills, or training. Besides that walking can be done almost anywhere, anytime of year and in even in less than perfect weather.

walking

Walking is also a no-brainer, that you can do while listening to music, news, sports, audio books, or just have some quality time inside your own head to think through stuff. Taking a friend or family is even better. I consider walking my dog with my wife as time very well spent. I think that this very simple habit has good benefits for everyone and not just those in poor condition, but even those who have a good PT program underway. Undefeated heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Marciano always took long walks as part of his training, not in place of running or gym work, but in addition too. I myself have always been a big walker, even as a kid I would walk everywhere. To my mothers dismay (and my sore butt after), neighbors and relatives would inform my mother of seeing me as a little kid many miles from home with my dog, going on some adventure, or another. Plus, for many people this may be the only time they can get outdoors during the work week as too many jobs are inside office work.

Walking burns calories, especially if you put a little ass into it. How much? Well, the standard for most walking programs is 10,000 steps a day. How far that is depends on your stride length, height etc. In any case, nowadays this is very easy to keep track of through an App on your smart phone. I use the Stepz app. On this one you can easily set up the step count for your height and weight. For me 10K steps is about 4.5 miles, which burns approx 450 calories. Now, that isn’t exact but close enough for government work. If 10K is too much to start, shoot for 5K, or just 2K. The point is to start somewhere and stick to it. Burning just an extra 200-400 calories a day by walking can make a big difference in losing and keeping excess weight off. It also provides a base of fitness that you can (if you want too) slowly start adding some jogging to: Like jog a 100 yards, walk a hundred, etc. From there you can go where ever you like, Then maybe add some weight lifting, biking and hiking and you now have a complete PT program. The point is you start at place that allows you to work up from without injury, or burnout and get some benefit along the way. At my work, a few of us have a little weekly walking competition. Every week we post our weekly total, to motivate each other to hit our step numbers. Many times that thought is enough to get me and the others out walking, when we would rather hit the couch.

raw

Attached is a picture of my total steps from last week. Of course mine includes my running, hiking and stair climbing, so some days are pretty high. On days that I only hit the gym, or I’m traveling I don’t get to 10K without some additional walking, which I almost always do after I eat supper. Which BTW is the best way to settle your dinner before you spool it down for the night. It’s a great way to clear your mind of the days battles also. In my book I call this “active rest” and it’s always been an important part of my routine and always will be. Get a step app and add some walking to your daily routine. My hunch is that you will enjoy some real benefits whether you need the exercise or not. Till next month:

“Be Safe Always, Be Good When You Can”.

The OIP Gen 2 comes in at 3.8 lbs bare and unloaded, and features a 14.5″, 1:7 twist barrel with a 5.56 NATO chamber, midlength gas system, and a pin and welded Battle Arms Ti THUMPER compensator, bringing the barrel to 16″ in length. Both the pistol grip and forend are constructed of carbon fiber, with weight-reducing lightening cuts, and the later also features M-LOK compatible accessory mounting slots. The receiver set is also aggressively skeletonized, and a majority of the components are made of titanium, including the bolt catch, gas block, bolt carrier, and takedown pins; a fixed aluminum, minimalist receiver extension/stock completes the rifle.

Coming soon from Black Collar Arms for the Pork Sword:

FARend — The Pork Sword Chassis’ integral front Pic rail is a bit close for a bipod. Mount it out farther with our FARend. That’s Forward Accessory Rod. Then the word “end” so it sounds like forend. Anyway, the FARend’s M-LOK® slots allow you to mount a bipod, angled or vertical forward grip, and/or barrier stop(s) out in front of the Pork Sword Chassis, all nice and close to the bore. A lightweight, minimalist, and simple solution for extending accessories up to a foot farther out front. The production version will be quick detach. (ETA late Q1, early Q2)
Handguards — yes, yes, we’re finalizing the design on those, too. (ETA Q2)
Stock Options — lightweight, M1913 Picatinny rail-compatible, folding stocks from Black Collar Arms are coming! These will have a typical length of pull for a rifle. Our Preferred Stock Option will have an adjustable cheek rest and butt pad. (ETA late Q1, early Q2)

SHOT 2019—TNVC Announces the PVS-14/PBM (Powered Bridge Mount) and SAS-E (Situational Awareness Suite-Enhanced) Booth 6502

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2019

1

Sands Expo Center, Las Vegas, Nevada—

TNVC is extremely proud to announce the release of the patent pending TNV/PVS-14-PBM Powered Bridge Mount this year during the 2019 NSSF SHOT Show.

The TNV/PVS-14-PBM was originally conceived to provide an option for military and law enforcement customers that already have large fleets of PVS-14 MNVD (Monocular Night Vision Device) and provide them with BNVD capability, offering improved depth perception and motion parallax, increased situational awareness, and PID range. While purpose-built BNVD systems remain a superior solution under most circumstances, it is not always realistic for large organizations to purchase brand new BNVD systems or pay for expensive conversion programs to rebuild old devices, especially when they already have fully functional and serviceable PVS-14s.

While the concept of bridging together two PVS-14s to create a set of BNVDs is not new, the TNV/PVS-14 Powered Bridge Mount offers new capabilities to provide the best possible solution for individuals and organizations seeking to get BNVD capabilities from their PVS-14s.

The TNV/PVS-14-PBM is a “drop-in” conversion for all TNV/PVS-14s, and most current AN/PVS-14s and other PVS-14s with a single AA battery compartment (TNVC can also convert double AA units to current specifications), and replaces the individual AA cells with battery inserts that connect to the central bridge, powered by a single AA cell and allowing for centralized activation of both devices without needed to operate each PVS-14 independently. The battery inserts also feature threaded ends to allow the factory battery housing caps to remain tethered and stowed to the device, requiring no modification of the host monoculars to be used in the BNVD configuration.

2

Unlike most bridge systems, the TNV/PVS-14-PBM uses two points of contact, the threaded accessory mounting point and the objective lens locking ring, to ensure the best possible alignment of the devices to prevent user-fatigue created by misaligned monoculars.

3

The TNV/PVS-14-PBM mounts with a standard BNVS-style dovetail interface, compatible with industry standard and issued Wilcox Industries and Norotos dovetail mounts, and providing greatly improved, secure and positive lockup compared to the current USGI “bayonet” interface typically used with the PVS-14 when used with the USGI “J-Arm.”

In addition to the onboard power supply, the Powered Bridge Mount also features the capability to be used with auxiliary battery packs, such as the Low Profile Battery Pack (LPBP) used with ANVIS aviator’s night vision system, and readily available through both military supply chains and the 1033 program, allowing increased battery life, as well as allowing users to shift some weight to the rear of the helmet, and serving as a counterweight.

4

The TNV/PVS-14-PBM also features independently articulating arms, allowing users to adjust the interpupillary distance (IPD), as well as swiveling one or both monoculars out of the way if the user needs to use their natural vision. This rotating feature, also allows the goggle to stow more closely to the user’s helmet, both distributing the weight more evenly, and allowing the user to maintain a lower profile when the goggles stowed.

5

The TNV/PVS-14-PBM is manufactured in the U.S. out of Delrin polymer and 6061 aluminum to the same high standards of quality, construction, ruggedness, and waterproofing as the proven TNV/Sentinel and RNVG systems.

The Powered Bridge Mount is currently available to all customers, and will also be offered in the TNVC Situational Awareness Suite-Enhanced (SAS-E) that will include the TNV/PVS-14-PBM, Ops-Core Mission Configurable Helmet Cover Gen. II, and a BNVS compatible mount, offering a turn-key solution for users who are issued the MICH/Army Combat Helmet/ECH, offering not only BNVD capabilities, but helmet accessory rails, and improved shroud and mount, and mounting points for strobes and other IFF devices without any modifications to the host helmet.

Please stop by and see us if you’re at the 2019 SHOT Show at Booth #6502. The TNV/PVS-14-PBM as well as the full SAS-E kit are on display, along with many other exciting new products and announcements for 2019!

TNV/PVS-14-PBM MSRP: $789, Dealer and Government Pricing Available

For product inquiries, to schedule a meeting during the 2019 NSSF SHOT Show, or military, agency, or dealer sales, please contact augee@tnvc.com.

Safariland Introduces the PROTECH Hi-Viz Shield and DT206C Stand-Alone Type III Plate

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2019

Shield provides transparent view eliminating blind spotsCost-effective, lightweight plate stops threatening M855/SS1109 green tip rounds

Safariland Protech_Hi Viz Shield_Back (002)ONTARIO, California – The Safariland Group, a leading global provider of safety and survivability products designed for the public safety, military, professional and outdoor markets, today announced two new Safariland hard armor products – the PROTECH® Tactical Hi-Viz Shield – a clear type IIIA shield offering see-through visibility for the officer – and a 1.2” thin PROTECH DT206C stand-alone type III hard armor plate for stopping the most prevalent rifle rounds on the market.

“We’re continually working to offer innovative and essential products for law enforcement professionals, said Todd Mackler, vice president hard armor for Safariland. The Hi-Viz Shield offers life-saving ballistic coverage by providing maximum visibility, critical when approaching blind spots such as vehicle windows, doors and searching attics. The DT206C plate offers thinness in a price-competitive product and has the capacity to stop M855 Green Tip rounds, which many type III plates can’t stop.”

Safariland’s Hi-Viz Shield models are made of a polycarbonate composite for clear visibility and allow officers to see threats from a wide perspective vs. a small viewport. NIJ 0108.01 compliant, the Hi-Viz Shield provides ballistic coverage for the critical head, neck and upper chest area and stops 9mm and .44 Magnum LSWCGC rounds for five impacts. The design features a corner radius and is equipped with ambidextrous horizontal grips. When light is needed, it can accept an optional Foxfury® Taker R40 Riot Shield Light sold by Safariland.

The Hi-Viz Shield is offered in three sizes/cuts: 1224, 1224T (both 12” x 24” at a MSRP of $1,100 each) and 924 (9” x 24” at a MSRP of $950) and is available February. MSRP and availability for the Foxfury Taker R40 Riot Shield Light will also be February.

The DT206C plate is a high-performing, lightweight, type III stand-alone plate, effective even against the increasingly common M855 Green Tip (SS109) round. Competitively priced, the DT206C plate is made from a ceramic/PE composite, has a multi-curve design and is just 1.2” thin. A NIJ 0101.06 type III certified plate, the DT206C can defeat six rounds of the most prevalent ammunition on the market including the M80, MSC, M193 and the M855 Green Tip (SS1109). It comes in a variety of sizes which include:

– 8.75” x 11.75” SAPI Small (MSRP: $520)

– 10” x 12” Shooters (MSRP: $530)
– 8” x 10” Rectangle (MSRP: $400)
– 6” x 6” Rectangle (MSRP: $270)

The Hi-Viz Shield and DT206C stand-alone plate will be on display at The Safariland Group booth, #12762, throughout SHOT Show 2019 from January 22-25. For more information, please visit www.safariland.com/safariland-body-armor.
