Tactical Tailor produces reusable PPE Face Masks

Friday, April 17th, 2020

After receiving Medical Grade Cotton Fabric, Tactical Tailor’s talented crew began sewing simple, single layer masks that could be delivered to local agencies quickly.

Another fine example of a Defense Contractor stepping up to meet our nation’s need for PPE – Tactical Tailor has been manufacturing Single Layer Cotton Face Masks to help assist local medical professionals in their local City of Lakewood as well as nearby Joint Base Lewis McChord combat the Coronavirus pandemic.

Made one size fits all, the mask covers both the face and nose area, preventing airborne water droplets from being transferred between the wearer and those nearby.

“This simple yet effective facial mask is made from Medical Grade Cotton Fabric and features adjustable elastic shock cordage that goes around the head and neck to prevent fatigue on the wearers ears like other face masks can cause. This also allows the cords to be adjusted easily for length and head shape for optimal comfort.

The single layer Medical Grade Cotton doesn’t require a separate filter, simply use, wash and reuse up to 30 times.

According to the website product page, these masks have three special finishes that aid in contaminant resistance:

  • Antimicrobial – Healthier to use than regular untreated fabric
  • DWR – Prevents droplets to be absorbed into the fabric
  • Soil Release – Easier to wash

While minimalistic in design, these masks are not meant be single-use/disposable. According to TT, they can be home or industrial washed and dried up to 30 times before replacement is recommended.

If you would like to personally purchase on of these Tactical Tailor PPE masks, they retail for $10.99 and are available here.

Terävä Skrama 200 Now Available from Varusteleka Oy

Friday, April 17th, 2020

Varusteleka Oy gave us a sneak peek of their new Terävä Skrama 200 knife at SHOT Show.

Skrama – as in Scramasax or Seax, a short, single-edged sword popular in the Middle Ages. Much like the Scandinavian Leuku, it doubles up as a tool and weapon. A fine name is always nice and the best ones are those with some history behind them – our 21st-century Skrama would surely meet the demands of any Saxon man from “ye good olde days”.

The 200mm long 80CRV2 Carbon Steel blade is slightly curved, with a hole in the tip for hanging. The back of the blade is flat, no saw teeth so it can be used for batoning wood when an axe isn’t handy. The full tang construction reveals a hole at the butt for a wrist strap.

The blade is sharpened to two different angles. Near the grip a 2″ portion has an angle of 25° for whittling and fine work. The rest of the blade has an edge of 34°, which has proven to be excellent for this type of chopping blade.

The handle is rubber for a positive grip, even when wet.

Comes with a leather sheath. Available with a plastic cover for a slightly less, in case you want to fashion your own sheath.

LBT x S&S Precision Teamup To Produce Medical PPE – Launch madeinthe757.org

Thursday, April 16th, 2020

In order to help alleviate shortages of medical PPE here in Hampton Roads, LBT Inc and S&S Precision have teamed up to produce these critical supplies.

Specifically, they are producing single-use Faceshields and reusable Face Masks. The vinyl face shield feature a closed cell foam liner and one-size-fits-all elastic headband.

While the masks are not an N95 or N95-equivalent and not designed to be a substitute for respirators, they are made from Milliken Biosmart fabric. This material incorporates a patented anti-microbial technology which enables the material to bind to chlorine in bleach when washed, creating an active barrier which kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. This defensive barrier is recharged with each wash in EPA-registered chlorine bleach. Sanitizing effects last up to 12 weeks with each wash and remains durable through at least 75 industrial wash cycles.

The masks also feature an internal pocket for replaceable air filters, they are designed to be worn by itself or over an N95 respirator as an additional barrier against fluids and airborne particles.

Early on, S&S Precision creates the trademark MadeInThe757 to show some pride in our local area and you see it adorned on many of their products. They had always hoped to expand its use to other companies in the defense industry and this was the perfect time to make it something bigger.

They launched the website www.madeinthe757.org to educate the public about defense against the COVID-19 virus and to showcase the equipment the team is producing.

Local hospitals have already placed substantial orders but the team is also making them available to the general public. Considering the CDC’s recent guideline change recommending individuals wear mask, this a welcome sight.

Orders of PPE in numbers below 100 are available through Tactical Distributors.

Qore Performance Optimizes Customer Experience for International Orders

Sterling, VA – In their endless pursuit of improving customer experience, especially in these challenging times, Qore Performance is drawing on their close partnership with FedEx from winning the 2019 FedEx Small Business Grant Competition. Qore Performance is proud to announce that pre-paid customs fees are now available for shipping to Allies in the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Germany, and South Korea. Varusteleka’s Remote Military March

Wednesday, April 15th, 2020

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all FTXs in Finland have been canceled. But as Varusteleka OY points out, they have 1600km of common border with Russia. Consequently, they see a need to keep their troops in top condition.

Varusteleka has taken it upon themselves launch what they calling a “remote military march.”

Rather than unit-level training, they want individuals to participate and they don’t care if you aren’t in Finland. It’s about solidarity and fitness after all. They already have some of the US partners joining up as well as lots of other Europeans as well.

Participants will get an awesome patch. They also have the Corona-division, where you need to do either 25km or 50km march with your protective mask on.

Plain and simple, each individual warrior executes their march according to their guidelines and shares the fun on social media. This way everyone can keep in top rucking condition and bring some good vibes to these grim times.

All participants who complete the challenge and share it in social media will get the desired Varusteleka’s Remote Military March patch and they will also do raffle off 1 pcs of 100 € gift card and 2 pcs of 50 € gift cards.

Sat 25.4. – Sun 26.4.

• Military: BDU, military boots, at least 10 kg rucksack from start to finish

• Open: No requirements for clothing and shoes. At least 10 kg rucksack from start to finish

• Corona: Same as the military division but wearing gasmask throughout the route. Gas mask can be removed for drinking and maintenance. ATTENTION! Please be aware of your own performance level and health. If you are unsure or do not have experience of marching with the gas mask, do not take this challenge.

25 km or 50 km. Route according to own choice but the route should contain both paved roads and off-road sections. The route should avoid areas which might be heavily crowded

Alone or in small groups and keeping in mind required social distances. If possible, some sort of trailing or GPS tracking would be nice. Share your experiences on social media by using hashtags: #varusteleka #etäsotilasmarssi #remotemilitarymarch #ves #vrmm and mentioning us so they can find your efforts.

So fill your rucksack with rocks, replace the boot laces and go!

I’ll be the first to admit that with so many options, it can be a bit overwhelming to choose which Arc’teryx jacket is the right one for a given activity. I used one of the jackets during an ice climbing trip earlier this year. In fact, most of us on the trip were outfitted with one. Activities included hiking in crampons up and down trails to the various ice faces along and climbing up those faces. In between, time would be spent either belaying fellow climbers or standing around waiting for our turn to climb. So the conditions were much like a professional user. We had movement interrupted by sedentary periods. It was pretty cold (down to the teens) but warmed up if you could get in the sun. I never overheated in the jacket, but did vent the front zip during movement. Once we were on-site the Windstopper shell was welcome to shed some of the breeze that would occasionally pick up and dust us with loose powder. Because of this, I was glad I had the Hoody as I really added my Alpha LT Shell to the mix. As for pants, I wore Wool long underwear and Alpha Pants. Although I brought COLD WX LT [GEN2] Pants with me in my pack, I never bothered putting them on since I was able to move around enough to keep my legs warm. This is the way to go if you’ll be moving around in cold weather.

The COLD WX LT [GEN2] line is offered in Jacket, Hoody, and Pant, both in solid colors and MultiCam.

Available from your favorite Arc’teryx LEAF dealer.
