Ask SSD – “How Mature Is The SIG Machine Gun Design?”

Friday, February 1st, 2019

After our articles on the new SIG Lightweight Machine Gun or SL MAG, we were asked how mature the design is.

Well, they’re obviously very serious about it. They’ve already written a -10.

The SL MAG in 338 NM ran fine during the demonstration I witnessed at SIG Range Day. However, I heard there were a few stoppages during the ISOF Range. Considering this is its first public outing, we think the design is very mature. In fact, a similar model is SIG’s entry for the US Army’s Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle Other Transaction Authority Production Opportunity. We look forward to seeing how these guns fare throughout further testing.

ORSS 19 – Beyond K8 Falcon S Parka Set

Thursday, January 31st, 2019

Designed for use in arctic extremes Beyond’s K8 Falcon S Parka Set relies on several material layers to keep you warm.

These layers are built with GORE WINDSTOPPER and Polartech Alpha Gold Insulation. The insulation regulates temperature, retains heat when wet, and dries much faster than down, while the outer Lutra layer provides a totally windproof, yet extremely breathable membrane. Even better, they’ve mapped the Lutra in the highest areas of exposure, to prevent convective heat loss. The torso has a higher level of breatheability to ensure moisture management in areas of high perspiration. You can somewhat see that mapping in this photo of the rear of the parka.

Details:
• Helmet compatible, insulated hood with adjustments
• Finnish Fox fur ruff (sold separately)
• Chest pocket hidden under center front flap
• Inner zippered chest pocket
• D-Rings at chest and sleeves for accessory attachment capabilities
• Covered, zippered hand pockets
• Hook and loop wrist adjustment
• Built-in softshell cuff with thumbholes
• Extended back hem drop with adjustable cinch

Above you can see the high waist of the trouser and integrated suspenders. The trouser also features covered side chest and hand pockets, covered front-to-back zip-through crotch panel, full side vents with double wind flap, articulated knees and a scuffguard on each inside leg.

Although the trousers are only available in Manatee Grey, the parka can be had in both Rescue Red and Manatee.

ORSS 19 – MATBOCK Introduces Travel Bag Line

Thursday, January 31st, 2019

First off, I was surprised to run into MATBOCK at OR, but they had their wares dialed in, with a focus on the Search and Rescue community.

For example, they were displaying their hard bottom Cobra Sled in Rescue colors.

But the new hotness is their Travel Bag Line. Made in the USA, the entire kit of five bags weighs just 7.5 oz thanks to the Ghost Lite construction. These aren’t going to absorb liquid and they’ve even used Kevlar thread and water resistant zippers.

Right now there’s a limited time offer for a set of five bags for $200 from www.matbock.com.

SureFire Field Notes Ep 40 – Getting on the Gun with Michael Baccellieri

Thursday, January 31st, 2019

Michael Baccellieri discusses how to properly mount a precision rifle in the prone position.

Michael “Buck” Baccellieri grew up in the Pacific Northwest where he started his military career at age 17.  He joined the Army National Guard while still in high school, attending basic and AIT, and spent three years as an infantry rifleman. Upon completing a deployment to the Middle East, he cross-decked to the Marine Corps, where he spent four years as an infantryman, assault climber, CWSS swimmer, and Scout in an STA platoon. Baccellieri later returned to the Army National Guard, taking up a slot in a sniper section and, after completing sniper school, moving on to the role of sniper team leader. He finished his career as an instructor at the Fort Chaffee sniper schoolhouse in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Baccellieri now works for Leupold & Stevens, Inc., as the lead optics and firearms instructor for all military/LE training. He fills his time between classes by performing military business development for the Oregon-based company.

SHOT Show 19 – SureFire MGX

Wednesday, January 30th, 2019

Back in 2012, small arms innovator Jim Sullivan filed for a patent for the MGX, a 5.56mm box-fed Machine Gun designed as an improvement over the Ultimax, which he also designed.

Below is a drawing from the patent, depicting the MGX from various points of view. It seems to have a bit of a Stoner 63 flair to it. Considering Sullivan contributed to that weapon system as well, it comes as no surprise.

The MGX, along with its associated 60 and 100 round High Capacity Magazines, was later purchased by SureFire from ArmsWest, LLC. The MGX is designed to operate from the closed bolt during semi-automatic fire and from the open bolt on full-auto.

The weapon weighs 9 lbs and is just 17″ with the barrel removed and stock folded. Recoil is managed so well, that like the Ultimax, it can be fired continuously on full-auto with just one hand. Barrels are 11.5″, 16″ and 20″ and the gun is convertible from 5.56mm to 6.8 SPC in seconds with a barrel change. You have to consider when the gun was designed to appreciate the 6.8 SPC option. The rate of fire is 550-650 RPM with an increase of 100 rpm when used with the SureFire SOCOM556-MG Suppressor.

Here you can see the folding stock and foregrip as well as its intended use with the 100 rd HCM.

During last week’s SHOT Show, the MGX showed up in SureFire’s massive booth, celebrating their 40th Anniversary. You’ll notice something interesting. Although the receiver is marked MG 10, it goes by the name MGX. Although the controls are similar to the AR-15, and a Stoner 63 pistol grip, it features a side charging handle and a quick change barrel.

Considering SureFire has kept the design under wraps for years, it was not only amazing to see it there, but to see it with a 2019 placard. Naturally, we wanted to know if that meant the MGX was finally going into production.

Unfortunately, we found out that SureFire is not getting into the Machine Gun business. Instead, they wanted to showcase a relatively unknown bit of history and hopefully raise interest in licensing the technology.

Hopefully, the MGX will find its way into production.

SHOT Show 19 – Stealth SBR Backpack from Elite Survival Systems

Tuesday, January 29th, 2019

Although the new Stealth SBR Backpack is a smaller, more streamlined version of their STEALTH Backpack, it’s also, well…more stealthy. It looks more like a piece of luggage than anything else in their line. But it opens up to provide plenty of room for a SBR and accessories. The interior features Velcro as well as PALS webbing. Additionally, it will accept an armor panel.

Offered in Black or Grey, the exterior of the Stealth SBR Backpack incorporates two zippered compartments. In addition to padded shoulder strains, the pack offers a waist strap and carry handle.

SHOT Show 19 – Auto-Lock Mojave Gen 2 Buckle by National Molding

Tuesday, January 29th, 2019

You’ll probably recognize the original Auto-Lock Mojave Buckle (left) from Mystery Ranch Packs. In fact, it was MR founder himself who drove the development of the Gen 2 Buckle (right) in order to provide a more low profile alternative. Both versions provide positive retention of the 1″ webbing they accommodate.

Male and female ends from either generation of the buckle are compatible with one another as well as with other National Molding 1″ SR buckles.
