AUSA 22 – SIG Looks To Expand Hybrid Case Ammo Offerings

In their booth at the recent AUSA show in Washington, DC, SIG Ammunition teased additional caliber options for their composite case ammunition technology recently selected by the US Army as the Common Case Architecture for the Next Generation Squad Weapon program.

Initially developed in 6.8x51mm for NGSW, the cartridge features a two-piece case which combines a steel head for strength with a more brass case. The same technology is used in the commercial round named .277 SIG FURY which received SAAMI approval two years ago.

According to Jason Imhoff, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of SIG Ammunition, they’ve concentrated on expanding the capability quite a bit with 6.5 Creedmoor and 7.62 NATO, but other calibers are also in the works. So far, they are seeing 300-500 fps increase in velocity over standard case designs.

Seen here are 5.56mm, 6.5 CM, 6.8 CCA, 7.62mm and .338 Norma Mag which are military calibers currently in use. Others, including SIG FURY versions of popular hunting and sporting cartridges will be pursued as well.

AUSA 22 – Flyer 72-U

The Flyer 72-U is an open cargo deck variant of the Flyer which is used by USSOCOM as the M1128 GMV 1.1 and with US Army as the XM1297 A-GMV. The cargo deck is 69″ wide x 83″ long).

Seen here is the UVision Hero-120 configuration which offers up to 10 systems (4 ready to launch and 6 stowed).

AUSA 22 – Spade Grip for SIG MG 338

SIG SAUER has developed a spade grip for its MG 338 Belt-Fed Machine Gun for vehicle mounted use.

SIG officials related that although they haven’t created a spade grip for the XM250, they aren’t ruling it out.

AUSA 22 – GORE-TEX PYRAD Refueler Suit

GORE-TEX PYRAD is a flame retardant fabric; a self-extinguishing technology that provides durable protection against flash fire exposure while remaining highly breathable, water resistant, and windproof. It’s used to make the Fuel Handler 2-Piece Suit worn by Soldiers and Marines.

In one of the most effective displays I’ve seen, WL Gore & Associates have showcased an example of what this garment looks like after a flame test.

As you can see, the material chars, but remains intact and protects the wearer from direct burns. It is also self-extinguishing. In addition to FR protection, the wearer also benefits from a breathable, water and windproof GORE-TEX shell.

AUSA 22 – KS-1 from Knights Armament Co

Developed for an international SOF requirement the KS-1 from Knights Armament.

This 5.56mm gas gun is the next step in the SR-16 line of rifles. It features their Mod 2 gas system, E3 bolt, as well as a 13.7″ cold hammer forged barrel. In addition to a 2-stage full-auto trigger grip, the trigger guard is completely removable without tools.

It is paired with the 5.56 QDC/MCQ-PRT suppressor which adds just 2.33″ to the length (oal 4.43″) and weighs 13.9 oz. It incorporates their pressure reduction technology to minimize back pressure and pushes noxious gases forward, away from the shooter. It reduces the sound pressure level to 155dB on short barreled rifles and eliminates the “first round pop.” There is also a removable shroud nit seen here, which reduces the outside temperature by up to 300 Deg F.

AUSA 22 – Wilcox Industries MRF Xe

The MRF Xe or Micro Range Finder – Enhanced combines a lightweight laser range finder and red laser designator on a common optical bench.

Cartridge ballistic data can be entered through third party applications and the MFR Xe captures both the environmental conditions transmitted from the sensor suite and the distance to the target transmitted by the precision laser range finder to the onboard computer instantly providing a ballistic solution.

MFR Xe also features an integrated Picatinny mount.

AUSA 22 – Rapid Force by Alien Gear

The Rapid Force duty holster by Alien Gear is now available in Tan 499.

Available in level 2 or 3 retention models, this holster fits most P320 pistol variants including MHS and designed to accommodate Streamlight TLR-1 or SureFire X300 and smaller lights.

Their QDS system offers compatibility with multiple carry options including as a drop leg.

AUSA 22 – New SIG Pistols for Australia and Canada

Over the last few weeks both Australia and Canada have joined Denmark and the US in adopting variants of the SIG P320 pistol. Although the pistols showed to be highly reliable during all four countries’ testing, most were drawn to the modularity of the design. With a common, serialized Fire Control Unit, the military pistols, like their civilian counterparts, be configured in a wide variety of ways.

Shown here is the M18 variant of the US Modular Handgun System opposite the Australian Sidearm Weapon System. When Australia-based Aquaterro set about preparing their entry for Land 159, they looked to the M18 as a baseline. What Australia ultimately got is a SIG P320 XCarry Pro outfitted with the SIG ROMEO2 Red Dot Sight and FOXTROT2- light. This is the first instance I know of that general purpose forces have adopted a pistol outfitted with an optic and light. In other instances, countries have incrementally added enablers to their pistols. Like the US, Australia has also adopted a Safariland holster for their sidearm.

More in line with the US MHS, Canada adopted a P320 as the C22 full frame modular pistol. Seen in these photos beside the Australian pistol, you’ll notice a slightly lighter shade of Brown. This is because the Canadian guns are cerakoted. This also provides a more information shading across the different materials of frame and slide.
