Teijin Aramid Invests in Increased Defense and Security Customer Support

Friday, November 30th, 2018

Arnhem, The Netherlands, November 29, 2018 – Teijin Aramid, leading manufacturer of premium aramid,  has expanded its development support for customers of the defense and security industry. A completely new, first-class shooting range, based on the latest standards in technology and software, has been created in its Application Competence Center (ACC) close to the EMEA sales office in Wuppertal, Germany. This new state-of-the-art shooting range will allow customers to develop their new products designed to counter specific threats.

For over 30 years, Teijin Aramid supports customers in the development of tailor-made solutions used in soft and hard ballistic applications for police, army, and VIP environments. Changing threats and individual demands are challenging development requirements. At the EMEA Application Competence Center (ACC), Teijin covers a wide range of testing standards for safety and defense applications. Their aramids Twaron®, Teijinconex®, Technora® and the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) Endumax® are tested in individual customer solutions and partly even with other products or components. The different tests and developments in the ACC take place in order to generate protective solutions against heat, open fire, cut, stab and ballistics.

The ACC is a strategic location for development support and testing. Customers from all regions benefit from the long term experience in aramids and polyethylene, their converting and the broad offering of testing possibilities. Efficiency was one of the major drivers for this investment. A combination of work process optimization and implementation of new technology and testing software, turns the new shooting range into a first-class testing facility. The range length was increased to 17 meters and is compliant with various soft ballistic and hard ballistic testing standards, including helmet testing. This latest technology protects operators and the environment from ballistic threats, pollutions, etc.

For the near future, additional enhancements are planned, e.g. a back face measurement performed via automatic scanning, providing information on depth and volume of deformation. Depending on market needs, an increased threat spectrum will be considered, as well as providing video streaming capability allowing customers around the world to witness ballistic testing live.

DroneShield Limited (ASX:DRO or DRO.AU) (“DroneShield” or the “Company”) is pleased to advise its participation in The British Army’s Army Warfighting Experiment (Autonomous Warrior) 2018.

The British Army has launched this four-week exercise, with a Battlegroup from the 1st Armoured Infantry Brigade (United Kingdom) providing the exercising troops and taking responsibility of command and control.  British soldiers will test and evaluate the effectiveness of robotic and autonomous systems (RAS) on the battlefield. These technological advances will play a key role in the Army’s strike capability, ensuring British forces remain unmatched on the global stage. Autonomous Warrior will develop capabilities in surveillance which will greatly improve the effectiveness of long-range and precision targeting by service personnel.

The UK Defence Minister Mark Lancaster stated, “Our Armed Forces continue to push the limits of innovative warfare to ensure that we stay ahead of any adversaries or threats faced on the battlefield. Autonomous Warrior sets an ambitious vision for Army operations in the 21st Century as we integrate drones, unmanned vehicles and personnel into a world-class force for decades to come.”

The exercise is the result of a large-scale collaboration between the British Army, the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force, the United States Army, the UK Ministory of Defence, the UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and the industry participants who were invited to participate.

Berlin Police Take Delivery of Rheinmetall Survivor R Special Operations Vehicle

Sunday, November 18th, 2018

Rheinmetall has formally handed over a heavily protected Survivor R special operations vehicle to the Berlin Police Department. Dr Barbara Slowik, Chief of the Berlin Police Department, symbolically handed over the keys to the Operations Directorate, represented by Criminal Investigation Division Director Martin John. This versatile vehicle, ordered as part of a package of counterterrorism measures in late September 2017, is specially configured to meet the needs of the Operations Directorate of the Berlin Police. Berlin follows Saxony as the third German state to equip its police special operators with the Survivor R.

Made by Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles, the Survivor R epitomizes Rheinmetall’s commitment to the twin modern imperatives of security and mobility. Developed in cooperation with Austrian special vehicle maker Achleitner, the Survivor R is superbly suited to police SWAT team-type operations. Vehicles of this kind are particularly important in high- risk situations when special operators need to be transported safely to the area of operations, or for evacuating persons from the danger zone.

The Survivor R is based on a high-performance 4×4 MAN truck chassis, outfitted with a steel armour passenger compartment. Capable of reaching a top speed of over 100 km/h, this high-mobility vehicle combines tried-and-tested automotive engineering from large-scale production runs with state-of-the-art force protection technology from Rheinmetall.

Systematic use of civilian off-the-shelf and standard military components results in a sensibly priced vehicle, while simultaneously benefitting from Rheinmetall MAN’s global service and maintenance network. This makes the Survivor R a cost-efficient, easy-to-maintain vehicle with low lifecycle costs and high operational readiness.

Norwegian Police Adopt SIG SAUER P320 X-Series as Standard Service Pistol

Friday, November 9th, 2018

Newington, N.H. (November 8, 2018) – SIG SAUER, Inc. is pleased to announce the Norwegian Police have selected the SIG SAUER P320 X-Series as the standard service pistol for select agencies within their organization. The Norwegian Police is comprised of 8,000 police officers and 8,000 civilian personnel responsible for domestic law enforcement, border control, coordinating search and rescue operations, counter-terrorism, highway patrol, judicial orders, criminal investigation and prosecution.

The Norwegian Police conducted a very demanding, rigorous, and stressful testing protocol that lasted several weeks with firearms from multiple manufacturers. Testing for accuracy, speed, performance and ergonomics was conducted by select agencies within the Norwegian Police with whom the pistol would be in service with, and a third party was used for evaluating technical qualities. In all areas, the SIG SAUER P320 X-Series outperformed the competition, making it the pistol of choice for those agencies.

The P320 X-Series pistol is a modular, striker-fired pistol with a serialized trigger group available in varying grip sizes and adaptable to multiple calibers. The intuitive 3-point takedown requires no trigger pull for disassembly, and safety features include a striker safety, disconnect safety, and optional manual safety.

“We are honored to earn the confidence of the Norwegian Police through their selection of the P320 X-Series as their standard service pistol,” began Ron Cohen, President and CEO of SIG SAUER, Inc. “We initially developed and engineered the P320 pistol for service with the military and law enforcement agencies. Since its introduction, it has been adopted by some of the most elite military and law enforcement agencies across the globe including the U.S. Army as the M17. We are very proud to add the specialized forces of the Norwegian Police to this list of elite agencies, and we look forward to developing and expanding this partnership.”

The SIG SAUER P320 X-Series is currently being placed into service with select agencies within the Norwegian Police.

Varusteleka Oy – Särmä TST Woolshell Jacket and Trousers

Thursday, November 1st, 2018

The other day I received a great note from the Finnish gear company Varusteleka Oy about their new Särmä TST Woolshell jacket and trousers.

We just released a really awesome outfit. Modern, minimalistic yet highly functional combat uniform made out of wool. At least in Finland, we have had a long tradition of making military clothing out of wool and approach was tested in the fire during the Winter War and Continuation War. We brought this legacy into a modern setting with Särmä TST Woolshell jacket and trousers. Extremely good in cold conditions, breaths, naturally antibacterial, naturally fire resistant and quiet.

Naturally, I was intrigued, so I checked them out and decided to share what I found.

First off, both are available in Green or M05 Woodland Camo and intended to be worn alone or under shell garments.

The materials selection is pretty straight forward:
