Special Operations Forces K9 Conference

Tuesday, July 10th, 2018

The first Special Operations Forces K9 Conference (SOFK9C) has been held near Warsaw (Poland) in June 2018. The topic of this year’s event was “Use of Service Dogs in the Fight Against Modern Terrorism”.

Operators, dog handlers, trainers and canine specialists from USA and all around Europe gathered to share knowledge and their experience. Various K9 techniques and tactics used in special operations are discussed, demonstrated and trained.

The goal for this event is not only to share knowledge in SOF community but also to build and strenghten relationships between people working on this very special and relatively new subject.

The conference is organised by SOF Project (Poland), Silent Technical (Poland) and Norse K9 (Norway).

The next SOFK9C will be held in 2019.

I am an unrepentant dog lover, even Maligators, so when I saw the Trident K9 Tactical Helmet by K9 Helms, I had to stop and take a look.

A. The main shell is a single piece of super-tough, 3D printed nylon. It features complex curves and details that are finely tuned for performance and durability.

B. ANSI rated, UV400 eye protection is easy to install and remove, yet stays firmly in place. Independent, spherical lenses are canted to each side to maximize the dog’s peripheral vision.

C. Left and right side retention plates squeeze inward with strap tension, providing cushy-yet-firm clamping force.

D. Thick rubber strap is reversible for use by right or left handed humans.

E. 2-position rail can be used to mount a variety of devices, or it can be removed altogether in favor of cameras like the MOHOC, which may be attached directly to the helmet surface.

F. Flexible rear brace meets the neck and terminates in a flared beaver tail, stabilizing the helmet during sudden changes to head and neck angles.

G. Secured with Velcro, the multi-panel foam padding is easily replaced and made in 3 sizes to achieve the best possible fit.

H. Captive strap guides and shielded button stud provide a secure closure that’s fast and easy to operate.

I. Removable fasteners facilitate easy disassembly. Replaceable parts allow for many rebuilds — extending the unit’s service life.

The helmet is still in the development phase, but should be released late this year.

Transaction Expands Constellis’ Capability to Train and Deploy K-9 Teams Globally, Enhances Ability to Provide Competitive Pricing to its Key Customers

RESTON, Va. (June 23, 2017) — Constellis, a leading provider of operational support and risk management services, announced today that it has acquired American K9 Detection Services, LLC (“AMK9”). The acquisition of AMK9, a leader in K-9 security services, sales and training around the world, significantly enhances Constellis’ capability to train and deploy K-9 teams globally.

As part of the transaction, ITC Capital Partners, AMK9’s former owner, has exited its stake in AMK9. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Constellis financed the acquisition with incremental 1st lien term loan borrowings under Constellis’ existing credit facility.

The transaction brings together the leader in K-9 detection services with one of the industry’s premier safety and risk management providers serving a broad range of customers, including U.S. government agencies (notably the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Department of Energy), foreign governments, NGOs and a diverse mix of blue-chip commercial entities. Additionally, the deal furthers Constellis’ ongoing strategies to diversify its service lines and to vertically integrate. Constellis will be able to leverage the combined entity’s scale, training facilities, shared best practices and financial resources to continue to offer its customer base competitive pricing while utilizing the industry’s most revered compliance programs.

Headquartered in West Point, Georgia, AMK9 has more than 300 employees operating across the U.S., the Middle East and Africa. AMK9 has an established track record of providing Contract Working Dog (CWD) teams to protect federal facilities, personnel and assets, having worked with the U.S. military to develop and implement industry standards for CWD teams. The company offers turn-key program management solutions to supplement government agencies and multi-national corporations in high-risk environments across the globe.

“AMK9’s well-respected brand and exceptional past performance bring tremendous value to our combined offering,” said Jason DeYonker, Chief Executive Officer of Constellis. “The acquisition of AMK9 allows us to diversify our training service line while also enhancing our ability to provide our customers with the best full-service solution at a competitive price.”

Jump The Dog: Canine Oxygen Mask for High Altitude High Opening (HAHO)

IMG_1542

OpenWERX provides the general public with monthly opportunities to collaborate on innovative approaches relevant to SOCOM and other federal government agencies.

Prizes: First place: $6,000 – Second place: $4,000 – Third place: $2,000

OpenWERX Challenge-Jump the Dog

Open the description PDF here.

Here are some measurements that can be used as a guide to help develop the proper sizes for the masks:

– The average for a standard Belgian malinois is a nose length of approximately 4? with a circumference of approximately 10?.

– Variations in sizes should be able to accommodate nose lengths from 3? up to 5?, and circumferences of 8? up to 13?.

It might also be useful to do an Internet search for “how measure for a muzzle”, and other information about what will be comfortable for a dog (i.e. how much extra space to provide for the dog so as not to force their mouth completely shut). This site is an example.

Each team will create a video (10 minutes or less) presenting their concept to SOFWERX. The video will be viewed by the judging panel prior to the event. The teams will attend the OpenWERX event 1 June virtually or in person to answer questions by the judging panel.
