Blade Show 2014 – Manu Toigo Introduces Machete

Sunday, June 8th, 2014

You may recall seeing Manu Toigo on the show “Naked and Afraid”. After an 8-year stint in the Australian Army, Manu spent several years recovering from injuries. During this period of recovery and self-discovery she found herself in acting school. After a student exchange in Seattle, she emigrated to the US and spent some time in the contract training world as a role player and instructor in scenario based training. This parlayed into some private investigation and personal protection work.

Eventually, she ended up on the show, “Naked and Afraid” in a jungle scenario, in Panama, leveraging the survival skills she learned growing up. On this episode, she used an Ontario machete. Based on this experience she was determined to create something more versatile than that single use instrument. This is what she has come up with.

Offered in 18″ and 24″ models, the Manu Toigo Signature Series Survival Machetes are manufactured from 1070 High Carbon Steel with either G10 or Micarta handles. The design incorporates several features Manu wishes she would have had at hand during her Panamanian adventure including a saw, gut hook and lash points which come in handy when using the hook to retrieve flora from trees.

Manu is still getting this project off the ground and so far she only has custom, low-rate production models. In order to get this into full production, she is looking for viable contacts in the following areas:

– A production knife sheath maker, producing Kydex and Nylon sheaths.
– US Based machine shop with blade making capability.
– Manufacturer of phenolic laminate like G10, including maker of production knife scales in OD Green, Coyote and Camo.
– Saw and or knife blade manufacturer.

Guardian Angel (GA) is a US Air Force, non-aircraft, equipment-based weapon system. GA is organized into nine specific capabilities: Prepare, Mission Plan, Insert, Movement, Actions on Objective, Medically Treat, Extract, Reintegrate, and Adapt.

The sum of these capabilities and acquisitions support the PR execution tasks of report, locate, support, recover, and reintegrate.

This equipment-based weapons system is employed by Combat Rescue Officers, Pararescuemen, and SERE Specialists and enabled by uniquely trained combat support personnel.

Recently, a GAWS team deployed to Iceland. This is their experience.

The guys at Atlas Devices showed us a new product developed by PMK Solutions (USAF PJ) called the Sled Dog Pack. We’ll give you a sneak peek and follow up soon with a full article.

Designed specifically for PJs and Medics, the heart of the Sled Dog Pack is the aluminum frame sheet (for stability and durability) that integrates PALS Compatible slots into the design called MSIG for MOLLE System Integrated Gear.

The MSIG offers shoulder straps and a padded yoke and lumbar which is removable to accommodate armor. The MSIG pouches include a micro haul kit, crash axe and GP pouch.

It also incorporates a Removable waist belt called the MARCH Belt (Massive, Hemorrhaging, Airway, Respiration, Circulation, Hypothermia). MARCH is a trauma treatment protocol and the belt is configured specifically to support that treatment. Internally, the sleeve offers pockets for casualty cards and chem lights and the outer area offers two rows of PALS webbing. The sleeve accepts load rated belts. The pouches mounted from left to right support the MARCH acronym.

Developed by a friend of SSD, the Survival.Signal.Rescue Panel or SAR Panel is a multipurpose signal panel designed to help the user survive and get rescued in an emergency situation.

The top side is composed of NSI/ISEA 107-2010 compliant high-visibility material, designed to reflect light in either day or night conditions. A center pocket stores the included 20ft. of 400lb break strength kevlar cord, and the entire panel can be stored within the pocket when not in use. High contrast black webbing is sewn around the edges, providing strong attachment points for the included cord.

The bottom side is composed of a US manufactured heat-reflective Mylar, thicker than a standard space blanket. In addition to the signaling and marking functionality, the SSR panel can be used as a sun shade, and the integral pocket can hold hand-warmer and be wrapped around the user’s chest, while the Mylar side is positioned outward to reflect and trap heat in the core. The Mylar is also waterproof so the SSR can be used as a rain cover.

The SSR Panel is currently up for funding on Kickstarter. Funding is going towards ordering the product materials, all produced in the USA. Project rewards include the SSR panel itself, up to a package including a GPS beacon, infrared strobe, and additional survival items.
