SAAMI Announces Acceptance of a New Cartridge

October 13th, 2026

The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute®,Inc., (SAAMI®) has announced the acceptance of a new rifle cartridge for SAAMI standardization. SAAMI is the organization at the forefront of promoting firearm safety by creating standards that ensure safety, reliability and interchangeability of firearms, ammunition and components.

Click on the cartridge name to open the introduction package.

5.56 COMMERCIAL – The 5.56 COMMERCIAL (abbreviated name 5.56 COMM) was introduced by Hornady Manufacturing Company with a 55-grain bullet traveling at a velocity of 3,400 fps and a Maximum Average Pressure of 62,000 psi.

The 5.56 Commercial cartridge and chamber defined here provide a publicly available consensus standard describing a chamber and ammunition system for commercial practice using the procedures and equipment detailed in the American National Standard SAAMI Z299.4[1].

Conformance to this specification does not imply or ensure conformance with any military or NATO specification. The absence of publicly available standards for “5.56 X 45”, including variants such as “5.56 NATO”, makes blanket compatibility statements of those products to products manufactured to this new standard impossible.

The 5.56 Commercial specification is a commercial SAAMI standard and will be revised only through the defined SAAMI consensus-based standards development and maintenance processes.

As a voluntary standard, the existence of this specification does not require firearm manufacturers to mark firearms as 5.56 Commercial (or 5.56 COMM), nor does it require ammunition manufacturers to adopt a 5.56 Commercial (or 5.56 COMM) headstamp, although the use of this designation as a roll mark or headstamp is acceptable practice.

For specific questions on the compatibility of ammunition made to this specification in firearms carrying a roll mark other than 5.56 Commercial (or 5.56 COMM), or vice versa, contact the manufacturer of your firearm or ammunition for further information.

Existing guidance that ONLY 223 Remington ammunition is to be used in a firearm chambered and roll marked as only “223 Remington” remains unchanged. The use of any 5.56 ammunition, including all military variants as well as ammunition produced to this standard in a 223 Remington chamber creates increased pressure and is considered an unsafe combination.

For further information on this new cartridge please click here.

The standardization of cartridge and chamber designs, along with pressure standards, is key in the achievement of SAAMI’s principal objectives of ensuring the safety and interchangeability of ammunition, firearms and suppressors. These standards provide manufacturers with appropriate guidelines to ensure proper and safe operation and interaction of their products for shooting sports enthusiasts.

Florida National Guard Advances Battlefield Capabilities During Drone Crucible

October 13th, 2026

The future of military operations increasingly depends on the ability to see, understand and act faster with greater precision. During Exercise Drone Crucible 26.3 at Camp Blanding Joint Training Center, Florida, Sept. 26-Oct. 2, the Florida National Guard put that principle into practice by integrating unmanned aircraft systems, communications technology and situational awareness integration capabilities to give commanders a more complete picture of the battlefield.

The U.S. National Drone Association hosted the event alongside the Florida National Guard and in concert with the War Department. Participants included personnel assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group; the 53rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Florida National Guard; Navy SEAL Teams 10 and 7; the 2nd Marine Division; and U.S. Marine Forces Special Operations Command.

The exercise tested unmanned systems and operational information sharing among military units and mission partners. Industry partners provided a secure platform that connected tactical users and enabled data sharing, supporting the Florida National Guard’s integration with the National Guard Bureau and U.S. Northern Command’s Homeland Tactical Assault Kit architecture.

The Florida National Guard’s Situational Awareness Integration Team supported the 3rd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group, during the exercise by integrating assault kit data and available video feeds into a common operating picture for the joint operations center. The kit allowed personnel in the field to share locations, threats and mission information, contributing to a more comprehensive operating picture.

During Drone Crucible 26.3, the Florida National Guard worked with Northcom and Joint Task Force National Capital Region to share kit data, unmanned aircraft telemetry and full-motion video. The effort connected the field activity with higher-level commands and demonstrated the potential to improve shared situational awareness.

The effort was designed to reduce the time between detection and decision-making during tactical lanes by bringing information from multiple systems and sources together in a way that supported commanders and operational teams.

“This exercise is giving us an opportunity to demonstrate how technology, innovation and strong partnerships can enhance the way we operate,” said Army Maj. Gen. Robert Carruthers, Florida Army National Guard commander. “By integrating unmanned systems and our latest situational awareness and mission command software together, we are eliminating stovepipe systems, reducing multiple devices and air-gapping of information while providing commanders with a clearer, fused operational picture that enables faster, better-informed decisions.”

The integration team provisioned about 82 assault kits and personal devices to the Florida National Guard server. At the same time, the operations center used eight video feeds to maintain situational awareness across the exercise.

During that time, the guard successfully shared assault kit position location information, operational overlays and full-motion video from unmanned systems with Northcom. The feeds included data from both unmanned surface vessels and unmanned aircraft systems.

“What we are building here has great value well beyond this exercise. Our goal is to develop a scalable capability that strengthens interoperability, speeds our kill chain, increases our situational awareness, and improves our ability to fight and win on a rapidly evolving battlefield,” Carruthers said.

The integration allowed Northcom in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and JTF-NCR in the Washington area to remotely view information generated during the exercise. The team ultimately demonstrated the capability at the combatant command level.

The team also supported the integration of multiple other teams through a modernization cell, while subject matter experts specializing in unmanned systems and tactical assault kits provided technical expertise and rapid user support. That structure brought together personnel from the National Guard and industry partners, creating an environment where service members could rapidly collaborate, troubleshoot and refine the technology while conducting the exercise.

“We’re taking emerging technologies and putting them to the test — validating the technology while also refining our standard operating procedures,” said a special operator assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group. “It’s about bringing the networks, hardware and software together, making sure those systems can communicate and determining how they support both our domestic and federal missions. It also gives us an opportunity to connect and operate with other states, units and government agencies.”

For the Florida National Guard, the significance of Drone Crucible 26.3 extends farther than the technology being tested.

“Beyond this exercise, the Florida National Guard team sees an opportunity to integrate this capability more broadly with conventional forces and partner agencies,” said Army 1st Lt. Lisa Casares, Florida National Guard situational awareness integrator.

“Having dedicated subject matter experts for each system has been critical to maintaining the common operating picture and resolving issues quickly,” she said. “Continued support from these experts will help the Florida National Guard sustain this capability and build a situational awareness framework that can scale beyond a single exercise.”

As unmanned systems and other emerging technologies continue to shape military operations, the ability to integrate information rapidly and provide commanders with a common operating picture is becoming increasingly important to how forces train, coordinate and respond.

“This exercise demonstrated how integrated unmanned systems strengthen soldiers on the battlefield,” said Army Col. Todd Hopkins, Camp Blanding Joint Training Center commander. “They do not replace soldiers — they extend their reach, awareness, protection and precision to help them move, fight and win.”

Mountain Horse Solutions Receives Second G-TEAD Order for FD-1 Interceptor Under Army Other Transaction Agreement

October 12th, 2026

Army’s Global Tactical Edge Acquisition Directorate turns soldier feedback into fielded upgrades in weeks, not program cycles

SARASOTA, Fla. – (Oct. 12, 2026) – Mountain Horse Solutions, a Global Ordnance company focused on mission-critical support, unmanned systems and integrated defense solutions, is delivering additional FD-1 interceptors to the U.S. Army under a second contract awarded by the U.S. Army’s Global Tactical Edge Acquisition Directorate (G-TEAD). The award, issued under an Other Transaction Agreement (OTA), follows an initial G-TEAD OTA awarded this spring. This marks two awards and a fielded capability within a single year, reflecting G-TEAD’s emphasis on accelerating new systems to soldiers.

“G-TEAD changed what is possible, allowing us to combine soldier feedback with our ability to rapidly improve and deliver capability,” said Bill Allen, president of Mountain Horse Solutions. “Soldiers assessed the FD-1 and told us what needed improvement. We turned those updates around within weeks, and G-TEAD provided a way to buy the revised version without waiting on a requirements cycle. That sequence did not exist three years ago.”

The FD-1 is a compact, dual-use interceptor designed to defeat Group 1–3+ Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) as well as ground targets. It can be emplaced and airborne in under two minutes, is employed by a single operator rather than a crew and is designed to integrate behind an existing detection and tracking layer as the defeat capability, or to operate as a standalone system. The operator maintains positive control throughout the engagement, and a human authorizes every engagement.

The system was developed to address a cost problem that has strained conventional air defense: inexpensive, expendable drones fielded in volume against interceptors that cost far more than the threats they defeat. The FD-1 is intended to close that gap while remaining simple enough for one soldier to set up and employ in the field.

G-TEAD, the Army’s acquisition hub for the tactical edge and a core component of the Army Pathway for Innovation and Technology (PIT), was established to close the gap between how quickly threats evolve and how quickly the Army can field a response. It brings acquisition expertise and authorities closer to Army Service Component Commands while connecting them with research, development, test and evaluation resources.

Through Accelerated Capability Events (ACE), soldiers can assess operationally ready equipment and software, provide feedback and help shape systems before broader fielding. The process is designed to accelerate validated technologies toward acquisition and operational use.

Supporting the process, the 409th Contracting Support Brigade provides contracting expertise and execution for G-TEAD efforts, helping move validated capabilities into acquisition actions on accelerated timelines. The brigade played a key role in the FD-1 award, providing the contracting support needed to maintain momentum from evaluation and refinement into procurement.

The FD-1 has been evaluated by G-TEAD, the 52nd Air Defense Artillery and the Army Test and Evaluation Command (ATEC), with Mountain Horse Solutions incorporating feedback throughout development. Following the initial operational assessment, the company delivered a series of user-driven upgrades within five weeks, a cycle it repeated after each subsequent assessment.

“The value of these assessments is that they are extremely insightful,” said Richard Budniewski, director of UAS/C-UAS Programs at Mountain Horse Solutions. “Soldiers find things a test range never will. G-TEAD built the pathway that turns their feedback into fielded improvements within weeks instead of program cycles and then gave the Army a way to order it. That is the part industry has been waiting on.”

The system took first prize in the U.S. Army xTech Counter Strike competition in November 2025, and its technical review by ATEC is complete.

G-TEAD’s Accelerated Capability Events are designed to move technologies from event conception to capability transition within 180 days. The FD-1 effort has tracked within that timeline from operational assessment through this award.

Mountain Horse Solutions is currently producing the FD-1 and has capacity to scale to meet additional demand, including orders placed by allied and partner nations.

System quantities and contract value are not disclosed.
