AeroVironment’s New Long-Range Tracking Antenna Significantly Extends Puma AE UAS Capabilities and Enhances Warfighter Safety

September 13th, 2017

LONDON, at DSEI, Sept. 12, 2017 – AeroVironment, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVAV), a global leader in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for both military and commercial applications, today announced the release of a new, long-range tracking antenna (LRTA) for its Puma™ AE unmanned aircraft system. The critical upgrade extends the range of Puma systems equipped with AeroVironment’s secure Digital Data Link (DDL™) technology to approximately 60 kilometers (37.28 miles), significantly boosting Puma AE’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities and enhancing warfighter safety.

“The LRTA enables Puma AE operators to gather critical ISR data while positioned much farther from dangerous hostile fire,” said Kirk Flittie, AeroVironment vice president and general manager of its Unmanned Aircraft Systems business segment. “Importantly, this technology provides our customers with a UAS solution that can triple the range of existing Puma systems that use our standard omni-directional antenna.”

The antenna also features an automated tracking function (two-axis positioner) that ensures a secure and reliable link with the Puma air vehicle while it operates at extended range. When integrated with AeroVironment’s Mantis i45 electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) gimbal sensor suite, this improved antenna gives Puma capabilities similar to larger and more costly Group 2 or higher UAS.

With M3/M4 DDL radio frequency capability, the new LRTA is compatible with a wide range of flight and ground assets that use those wavebands, including AeroVironment’s Pocket Digital Data Link (pDDL AE™) transceivers and Pocket RVT (pRVT™) video transceivers, which give users direct access to real-time video downlink images and geodata from any DDL-equipped platform.

Among other important features of the new LRTA, its rugged frame was designed for operation in the harshest conditions. It comes fully equipped with all the components needed for its operation. Plus, operation with the LRTA requires no modifications to Puma Systems compatible with M3/M4 DDL radios.

The new LRTA’s automated tracking function offers close range automatic antenna switching for omni-directional use. Additionally, the antenna is equipped with a self-contained uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for power conditioning.

Puma AE (All Environment) is a fully waterproof, small UAS designed for land and maritime operations. Capable of landing in water or on land, the Puma AE empowers the operator with unmatched operational flexibility in the small UAS class. Puma’s enhanced precision navigation system with secondary GPS provides optimal positional accuracy and reliability. Moreover, AeroVironment’s common ground control system (GCS) allows the operator to control the aircraft manually or program it for GPS-based autonomous navigation.

The LRTA for Puma AE systems is now available for ordering, with delivery scheduled for Spring of 2018.

DSEI 17 – Troy Introduces UK SP Side Pull Rifle

September 13th, 2017

In order to comply with U.K. Firearms restrictions for center fire rifles, Troy has developed a side charging, single shot rifle in .223. As you can see, it retains its AR looks. Interestingly, it’s fed by a standard AR mag, although, local mag capacity rules apply.

Here, you can see the fixed charging handle.

This rifle would also be compliant in several US states and they are taking pre-orders now.

DSEI 17 – Thales Launches F90 Modular Bullpup Rifle

September 13th, 2017

Based on the F90 Austeyr rifle, the F90 Modular Bullpup Rifle, offers a couple of upgrades. In addition to user swappable upper receiver groups, 14″, 16″ and 20″, the gas piston has been modified in order to pass the USSOCOM over the beach test.

You’ll note Picatinny rails at the 3, 6, 9 and 12 O’clock on the rail.  They’ve also integrated multiple  QD points on either side of the lower receiver.

By now, you’ve noticed that the F90MBR will accept NATO STANAG magazines.

Another major change is the ambidextrous magazine release just in front of the trigger although the weapon retains the rear mag release just aft of the magazine well.

In order to accommodate NATO STANAG magazines, the barrel interface has been modified slightly from the F90. I asked about M855A1 compatibility and was assured that their feedramps will accommodate its use.

You’ll also note a full range of accessories for this weapon system.

DSEI 17 – Revision JTAC Vest

September 13th, 2017

In collaboration with the US Air Force, Revision has been working on a vest for Joint Terminal Attack Vest. In particular, they’re concentrating on a baseline which Airmen can customize, based on individual needs. The base armor vest is a modified Crye Precision AVS and Revision is working on the power and data management. One of example of what you’ll see is a series of apps to control the various components and human interface.

Additionally, Revision ran me through their work on the next generation of headborne systems through the introduction of Sensys. Look for additional details soon.

DSEI 17 – Eagle Industries Ergo Performance System

September 13th, 2017

The Ergo Performance System is designed to fit any armor carrier system. Essentially, it offers standoff between you and the carrier and mitigates some of the energy from the weight of the carrier when moving around.

When fitted inside the rear of the carrier, it disapates heat, increasing air flow/ventilation by 50%, decreasing heat under back panel of the carrier by 12-16o F, and lowers abrasion points.

DSEI 17 – TacFlex Injection Moulded Blackhawk Ammo Pouch

September 13th, 2017

We found this 30 round ammunition pouch while perusing the various implements of destruction at DSEI. It’s made of four injection moulded components (front, back and two sides) with a bungee holding it all together. There’s even a barrel lock at the bottom to adjust tension.

Hmmm, where have we seen that set up before? The Taco has truly inspired more magazine carriers than any other magazine carrier in history.

It attaches to belts and PALS webbing via two removable connectors.

Also available in a pistol model with an AK variant coming soon. Look for an official launch during SHOT Show.
