Rheinmetall Takes Over Hagedorn-NC GmbH, Securing the Supply Chain for Propellant Production

April 8th, 2025

Rheinmetall AG is taking over Hagedorn-NC GmbH, headquartered in Osnabrück, Lower-Saxony. This long-established company has been producing industrial nitrocellulose for civilian applications in Lingen an der Ems for over 100 years. In the course of the takeover, relevant parts of the production are to be converted to military applications. The acquisition enables the Düsseldorf-based technology group to strengthen its manufacturing capacity for propellants for all types of ammunition, especially for 155mm artillery ammunition.

A corresponding purchase agreement has now been concluded between Rheinmetall and Hagedorn AG, Osnabrück, as the seller. The acquisition is subject to antitrust approval by the relevant authorities.

Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG: “The acquisition helps us to overcome a strategic bottleneck in propellant production. It gives us an important source of raw materials and continues the vertical integration along the entire value chain in the production of ammunition. We look forward to welcoming the approximately 90 employees of Hagedorn NC to the Rheinmetall Corporation and to offering them secure prospects for the future”.

Gerd Hofmann, CEO of Hagedorn AG: “I am very pleased to have found a new owner for Hagedorn-NC in Rheinmetall, which will offer the company new prospects and growth opportunities. I am convinced that both companies will work well together.”

Nitrocellulose is an essential energetic component of propellant powders. These are used, among other things, as propellants for artillery ammunition. Nitrocellulose is produced by reacting cellulose with nitrating acids. Rheinmetall currently produces nitrocellulose at three sites: Wimmis (Switzerland), Murcia (Spain) and Wellington (South Africa). Through this acquisition, the corporation will have an additional site.

Existing customers of Hagedorn-NC GmbH in the civil sector will continue to be supplied for the time being. In the coming months, conversion
of production to military-grade nitrocellulose is planned.

This step further strengthens Rheinmetall’s position as a leading supplier of large calibre ammunition within NATO, ensuring a long-term, independent supply of essential components for production. As a system house, Rheinmetall offers the ‘full shot’ from a single source: the projectile, the fuse, the explosive charge and the propellant.

This year, Fort Nogent opens its doors wide and immerses you in its world. To mark the commemoration of Camerone, enjoy 3 days of unique experiences (April 30, May 3 and 4) alongside the legionnaires.

THE BATTLE OF CAMERONE, A LEGENDARY STORY: On April 30, 1863, during the Mexican expedition, 60 legionnaires besieged in a hacienda heroically resisted 2,000 Mexican soldiers. Every year, this legendary battle, a symbol of loyalty to one’s word and sacred mission, unites the white caps around the “legion spirit.” The military ceremony, open to the public, will take place on Wednesday, April 30th at 11:00 a.m. and will be presided over by Lieutenant General Loïc Mizon, Military Governor of Paris.

AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE AT THE HEART OF THE LEGION: After the ceremony, it’s time to celebrate:

Experience the adrenaline rush: military demonstrations, commando courses, and physical challenges.

Enjoy an XL fair: rides, attractions, and family fun.

Attend the Miss White Képi pageant, followed by the Legionnaire’s Ball, from 8:15 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Try your luck in the raffle: many prizes to be won!

On May 3rd and 4th, the Fort reopens its doors for two more days of celebration.

A MENU BY THIERRY MARX: This year again, Thierry Marx, Michelin-starred chef and loyal supporter of the Legion, invites you to discover a special, gourmet, and charitable menu. For only €12, you can enjoy a gourmet burger, a pastry, and an organic craft beer. The profits will be donated to the Legionary Mutual Aid, benefiting the wounded, bereaved families, and former legionnaires.

FORT DE NOGENT: A RECRUITMENT CENTRE: Since 1962, Fort de Nogent has been a key point for Legionary recruitment.

Each year, more than 3,000 candidates pass through its doors, but only 1,400 will join the ranks of this elite troop by 2025. The Foreign Legion is a fighting force composed of nearly 9,500 men, representing 12% of the Army’s operational strength. The Foreign Legion is a unique human force, representing nearly 150 nationalities.

Legionnaires serve under a so-called “foreign title” contract and are commanded almost exclusively by French officers. Since 1831, the Legion has been an elite troop of the French Army.

It is engaged in all external operations as well as internal missions to protect the national territory.

USSOCOM Seeks Down Range Crosswind Sensing

April 8th, 2025

The USSOCOM Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program will soon be accepting submissions for Down Range Crosswind Sensing (DR-CWS), a special area of interest.

The objective is to develop applied research towards developing the capability to measure down range crosswind for long range precision small-arms engagements.

US, Philippine Soldiers Strengthen MEDEVAC Skills in Joint Jungle Training

April 8th, 2025

CAMP TECSON, Philippines — U.S. Army medics partnered with Philippine Army soldiers for a medical evacuation-focused subject matter expert exchange as part of Exercise Salaknib 2025, March 25, 2025.

The MED 101 class, led by U.S. Soldiers from Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment “Lightning Dustoff,” provided both forces with critical hands-on instruction in MEDEVAC procedures, equipment handling and patient transport techniques designed for joint operations in austere environments.

Training began with a ground demonstration featuring several essential medical tools. Soldiers were introduced to a compact roll-out stretcher used for stabilizing patients, as well as hoist system components — including hoist lines and the jungle penetrator. U.S. instructors demonstrated how the hoist lines function, emphasizing proper attachment, balance and patient safety during extraction.

The joint training allowed both Philippine and U.S. Soldiers to build familiarity with life-saving equipment in a realistic setting — something that benefits both instructor and student.

“Mostly, we’re just trying to familiarize people with the equipment we use,” said Staff Sgt. Eleanora Raffaele, a flight paramedic with Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, “Lightning Dustoff.” “But it’s also good for us, getting hands-on with a lot of that gear again. You can’t really teach experience, so it’s nice for us to get out there and work with it too.”

She said the opportunity to train with the Philippine Army added even more value to the day’s mission.

“We don’t usually get to work with them, so it was great to be able to walk them through it and help everyonethem get familiar with the systems we use,” Raffaele said.

Following the ground instruction, Philippine Army soldiers took part in a practical exercise using a U.S. Army MEDEVAC-configured helicopter, conducting aerial lifts with the jungle penetrator under guidance from U.S. flight medics.

Training events like this one highlight the growing partnership between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the U.S. Army — reinforcing the shared commitment to readiness, trust and seamless coordination in future joint operations across the Indo-Pacific.
