Cold Steel Sharkie

January 6th, 2012

At SSD, we LOVE Sharpies, so when we found about Cold Steel’s new Sharkies we were pretty excited. Made from the glass-reinforced plastic, Grivory, the Sharkie’s walls are four times thicker than a standard marker. This means that it is going to be pretty hard to break.

Rip Shears

January 6th, 2012

We are big fans of Rip Shears. Designed by Naval Special Warfare Corpsmen, Rip Shears are Made in the USA and crafted from fiberglass-reinforced nylon that can be autoclaved up to 270 deg F. Additionally, the blades are 440A stainless steel and are treated with a special DLC tungsten coating for increased lubricity. In fact, the coating will extend the life of the blades 4-5 times normal stainless steel. The design is simple and safe to clean with your fingers as well as replace blades. In fact, when you finally do need to change the blades, they are designed in such a manner that they are impossible to install incorrectly.

They are available in a variety of different color schemes. Here you can see the Glow-in-the-dark Firefly mounted on Orange handled EMT shears with Black blades.

Their tagline is “Just Snip and Rip” and it’s really that simple. We use them all of the time to open a wide variety of items.

New Eyepro from Smith Optics

January 6th, 2012

At SHOT Show 2012 Smith Optics Elite Division is officially unveiling a couple of new eyeshields in a line called Aegis which denotes the lens type. The Aegis Arc and Aegis Arc Compact share similar geometries but the Compact model is naturally a little smaller to accommodate smaller faces. One of the most exciting things about the Aegis line is the innovative PivLock Lens Interchange Technology that allows for fast lens exchange.

Additionally, the Aegis Echo is designed specifically for those wearing helmet and headset combinations. It features ultrathin moldable temples that hug close to the head but don’t make it feel like you’re being squeezed in a vice.

One major announcement is the frames are MultiCam. It seems odd, but Smith is the first company to offer production eyepro with MutliCam frames. This isn’t just about looks. While they’re going to do a better job of blending in to the wearer’s overall ensemble, Smith Optics delivers performance as well. They combine Tapered Lens Technology to make sure what you see is optically correct with full UV protection in addition to meeting US Standard MIL-PRF-31013, ANSI Z87.1-2003 and EN 166 standards.

Additionally, the Aegis Eyeshield is exclusive to Tactical Assault Gear at SHOT Show.

Smith Optics Elite Division will be in booth #7310 at SHOT Show.

The Mother of All Afghan Camo Solicitation

January 6th, 2012

The synopsis for this solicitation entitled, “Organizational Clothing and Individual Equipment, uniforms and field jackets for the Afghanistan National Security Forces to include the Afghanistan National Army and Afghanistan National Police” is almost shorter than the title, “Contractor shall provide Organizational Clothing and Individual Equipment (OCIE) uniforms and field jackets for the Afghanistan National Security Forces (ANSF) to include the Afghanistan National Army (ANA) and Afghanistan National Police (ANP).”

Initially released over the holidays and updated today, the “Mother of All Afghan Camo Solicitation” as we are calling it, originated with US Forces in Afghanistan and has a pretty short response time. Offerors must reply by Jan 20, 2012 at 7:00 am Eastern. But with a contract ceiling of $150 Million, the juice definitely looks to be worth the squeeze if you have the contacts in country to make this happen.

Now, here’s the kicker, assembly of the uniforms and equipment must be accomplished in Afghanistan but materials can be imported…from any country. However, due to proprietary restrictions there is a directed source (ADS) for 3 of the 6 camouflage patterns required to complete the contract such as the GHOSTEX Kilo-1 seen above. It is important to note that ALL 6 patterns are Afghan patterns and already in use by their forces so they aren’t looking for new camo.
