Airborne 22: US, Japan Test Interoperability

February 2nd, 2022

YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan (AFNS) —

The 374th Airlift Wing supported Japan Ground Self-Defense Force soldiers assigned to the 1st Airborne Brigade in operation Airborne 22, Jan. 25–26.

Airborne 22 is the largest annual static-line personnel jump and cargo drop exercise between the U.S. Air Force and JGSDF.

The exercise integrated 11 C-130Js from the 36th Airlift Squadron, Yokota Air Base, and two from Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, carrying approximately 500 JGSDF soldiers for an airdrop training at the Combined Arms Training Center Camp Fuji, Japan, drop zone.

An additional 100 Container Delivery System bundles, carrying simulated cargo, were also dropped from U.S. Air Force C-130Js at six different points of impact at Fuji DZ. The simulated cargo, which consisted of fuel, water, food, and different types of ammunition, directly supported JGSDF operations on the ground.

This interoperability mission provides an excellent opportunity for the JGSDF to get all the airborne exercise they need, said Capt. Jordan Baab, 36th Airlift Squadron instructor pilot and Airborne 22 mission commander. It also offers the 36th AS the chance to practice its forward-deployed attack capabilities.

Airborne 22 demonstrates the U.S. Air Force and JGSDF’s capability to execute a large force insertion on a drop zone. It showcases the combined capacity between USAF and JGSDF’s ability to rapidly deploy joint forces while emphasizing the strong allied commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

“This is a proof of concept that the tactics, techniques and procedures that we practice and train every day play into effect and work pretty well,” said Capt. Audrey Crismon, 39th Airlift Squadron C-130J pilot and Airborne 22 mission commander. “No matter where we are, who we are working with.”

Black Collar Arms APS

February 1st, 2022

Austin, TX — Not a shoulder stock, not a pistol brace, the brand new Black Collar Arms APS — Adjustable Pistol Support — is a height adjustable rest designed to support a precision pistol on a bench, the ground, or another surface. It’s a brand new category of rear accessory for firearms and is ideally suited to large, accurate pistols.

While a pistol brace is designed to brace against the shooter’s body — typically on the forearm — for extended-arm firing of the pistol, the Black Collar Arms APS isn’t designed to contact the shooter’s body. Used as a second or third point of contact on a solid surface, the APS provides a stable, height-adjustable rear rest with vertical point of aim adjustment accomplished by simply rotating the monopod.

The Black Collar Arms Adjustable Pistol Support will be available first in a clamp-on design for pistol buffer tubes and anything that accepts a Gear Head Works Tailhook MOD 1. On a buffer tube it can be adjusted forward and rearward to align with a given shooting bench, rock, side-by-side dashboard, hunting blind, or other support surface.

Seen here in rough prototype form, the production APS will have the ability to accept popular bipod feet in the bottom. With bipod feet available in styles ranging from rubber bumpers to machined aluminum spikes, there’s one to accommodate every type of support surface and shooting style.

Shipping is slated to begin in April, 2022. Pricing is still subject to change, but the MSRP target is $149.95.

SIG MOD-X9 Selected by USSOCOM as Mk27 Handgun Suppressor

February 1st, 2022

Last fall, USSOCOM selected the SIG MOD-X9 in 9mm as the suppressor for use with the Mk27 handgun, a SOF unique pistol which is known commercially as the Glock 19 and is currently in service in several variants.

The user configurable MOD-X9 Suppressor is comprised of seven, 3D-printed titanium baffles and an encapsulator with 21-points of impact adjustment.  The length is adjustable from 3.25 inches to 7.5 inches, the weight is adjustable from 5 ounces to 8 ounces, and the sound is adjustable from 127.4dB to 145.3dB.

With a handgun suppressor requirement on the books for years, the capability was finally acquired via an Other Transactional Authority acquisition which saw several manufacturers offer commercially available suppressors compatible with the Glock handgun.

Participating vendors demonstrated their suppressors to the command during a private range event in 2020. Then, they selected two suppressors to move forward with operator testing and a technical evaluation at Naval Surface Warfare Center – Crane which handles procurement of weapons for Special Operations Forces. The result was selection of the SIG MOD-X9.

Due to the nature of the procurement, traditional steps aren’t necessarily followed so unfortunately, there has been no public notice of the buy. Regardless, the first tranche of suppressors for the Mk27 handgun should be hitting units by this summer.

TacMed Tuesday- Adaptive First Aid Kit

February 1st, 2022

What is TacMed’s Adaptive First Aid Kit?

The TacMed™ Adaptive First Aid Kit, or AFAK, is a compact kit that provides an individual soldier or law enforcement officer with the necessary lifesaving equipment to effectively treat injuries commonly associated with combat trauma.
