Saturday, July 24th, 2010

The folks who brought us the ultra lightweight VS-PBZ Multi-Hit plates are working on an entirely new look. Their new site won’t just give you information on their full line of armor solutions but will also teach you about what types of armor should be used for different applications via the Understanding Armor Q&A Blog.

The new look (and features) isn’t here yet, but should be in place early next week so keep your eyes peeled.

MultiCam Soldier Plate Carrier System

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

PEO-Soldier recently released a photo of the Soldier Plate Carrier System in MultiCam. Interestingly, the PALS webbing is MultiCam. Initially, we had been informed by Army sources that all accessory tape would be in Tan 499 due to the increased cost of printed webbing. The Army will begin issuing equipment in MultiCam to Afghanistan-bound troops next week.

Coyote Z-Lite Sleeping Pad

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Cascade Designs has taken their popular lightweight Z-Lite folding mat and changed the color from Orange to Coyote. A simple mod but it means the world to troops who want to put the Z-lite’s egg carton-style cushioning to work in the field. It folds out to a roomy 20” wide x 72” long yet weighs in at only 15 ounces! And, unlike air mattresses, you don’t have to worry about leaks.

Previously in limited production the mat was evaluated by the Marine Corps. However, Cascade Designs put them into full production based on its adoption by an element of the US military. CPGear is the first company we have seen to offer this product.

Stealth Flipfins ADS

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

It has been over two years since we wrote about the Flipfin product from Omega Aquatics. Since then they have attracted the attention of military divers and swimmers and have developed the Stealth model specifically for this community. We were fortunate to check out this new model last week at the Warrior Expo – East. They still do the same job, propulsion in the water with the blade down but accommodate mobility when dry or moving through surf with the blades in the up position. The big difference is that this model was designed specifically for military use and features a large foot pocket for boots as well as being neutrally buoyant.

Offered in Black as well as Orange, the Stealth Flipfins are available from ADS or from www.flipfins.com.

Check Out Our Tactical Balls

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

We’d like to welcome the Mad Duo themselves to the readers of Soldier Systems Daily. We have been following them for years on Breach-Bang-Clear and they will be stopping by occasionally to show you all a different point of view.

Brite-Strike Tactical Illumination Products has recently started showing off their balls, and not just their tactical balls but their IR/NVG balls as well! Now, we haven’t tried them out yet (hoping to get some soon to T&E) but we want to point out that they’re not, contrary to some of what we’ve heard, not intended to replace NFDDs (Noise Flash Diversionary Devices) like “flashbangs”. They are, however, intended to be a easily used, low cost distraction device that can be carried by patrol officers and deputies (or MPs, presumably) without specialized training. They are available in IR for military and LE tactical units.

Touted as small, lightweight, water- and shock-resistant, they “wobble and spin all around” when deployed by rolling or tossing them in a room, and will land light up to backlight your opponent or intruder. Presumably they may also provide a tactical or illumination edge in areas where a standard NFDD could not normally be deployed (like a clan-lab or potential sympathetic detonation environment), or perhaps as a signaling device. There’s a video of them being deployed here, though it probably doesn’t do them much justice. For ourselves, we’d rather see them made with a good strobe function like the Strategos Gladius, but we’re not ones to nay-say without trying something out.

The product bears the NTOA symbol of approval and is sold in lots of five (5). If we get some of ‘em to try out we will let you know most ricky-tick.

Revision Cancels Purchase of PSP’s Headborne Division

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Unfortunately, it looks like the deal for Revision to purchase Pacific Safety Products’ headborne system and helmet liner assets for $1,275,000 has been terminated by Revision. Under a Memorandum of Understanding, Revision had the right to terminate if the sale was not completed by July 15, 2010. However, all is not lost. PSP and Revision are continuing talks for a partial sale of PSP’s Headborne System.
