Ares Armor Now Offering High-End Packs and Kit in A-TACS

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Ares Armor is well known to SSD readers for their functionality, versatility and quality of their gear designed based on direct experience operating in the field. Now, it’s all available in A-TACS.

Ares Armor was founded by seven Marines, all with infantry combat experience with service both Iraq and Afghanistan. Combined, Ares ownership has more than 50 years of actual combat experience. Five of the seven Ares co-owners are currently still on active duty with the Marine Corps and have held billets as Snipers, Recon, Infantry Platoon Sergeants, Infantry Squad Leaders, Infantry Team Leaders, Urban Shooting Skills Instructors, Military Operations in Urban Terrain Instructors, Infantry Combat Instructors, and Rifle Marksmanship Instructors. They convey this combat focused experience into every design they create.

Featured in the line is the Ares Armor Atlas Ruck in A-TACS, designed for long range patrols and extended field operations. The pack is only slightly larger than the standard large military mountain rucks with many innovative features including, seven external GP Pouches, a removable top flap Admin Pouch / Organizer with hidden straps that allow it to convert into a simple Short Range Pack, an Internal Radio Pouch as well as two Extra Long Pouches designed for use as Hydration Carriers or, 119 Foxtrot-sized Radio Carriers. Other features include, extra padding positioned along the mid-back crossbar as well as an enhanced Kidney Pad with additional webbing and storage. All of these features allow the operator to keep his mind on the mission and not on his gear.

Additionally, they are offering the Ares Combat XII Pack designed for short duration operations which was recently featured here on SSD. This unique and easily adaptable low-profile pack is designed to either clip directly into the MOLLE system of most Plate Carrier or Armor Systems without the use of shoulder straps allowing for a full range of motion or, the included straps can be easily attached for use as a backpack. Other features include two removable pop-up pouches, room for six 5.56 Mags or three 7.62 Mags, Space for up to two hydration bladders or PRC-117Fs as well as two access ports and dual side access pockets.

Other great offerings from Ares include, the Arturo Three-Day Pack, The Multi-Purpose Tactical Duffel, Tactical G Bags and a wide range of pouches, bags and Chest Rigs. For more information on new Ares Armor available now in A-TACS, visit them online at www.aresarmor.com.

Mission Ready Equipment Has Launched

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

One of the best kept “tactical” secrets in recent time has been the advent of Mission Ready Equipment. Born of 41 years of outdoor recreational expertise, MRE is an adaption of that knowledge base, applied to the tactical problem set. MRE’s sister company, Blue Ridge Mountain Sports is well known for their guide services and customer training programs as well as providing the best clothing and equipment to outdoor enthusiasts. They found that they were selling lots of these products to military and law enforcement customers and took a look at how they could help both supplier and user forge a better relationship. BRMS launched MRE to leverage their buying power to provide outdoor products tailored for the tactical customer as well even more specialized support for select customers.

For example, MRE is the exclusive distributor of Icebreaker Merino clothing in MRE Tan. Expect to see other quality outdoor products in tactical colors as their reach grows. To help spread the word about this new capability, MRE has selected former SEAL Kyle Defoor as its first Brand Ambassador. He is not only an skilled athlete and outdoorsman but also provides world class tactical training. In all of these roles he represents MRE and provides user feedback on developmental projects.

COMTAC IV Hybrid

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

3M Peltor has just introduced the next generation in communications headsets, the COMTAC IV Hybrid.

The idea is pretty cool. The headset housing which resembles an upside down horseshoe contains all of the electronics which eliminates the need for a large, heavy external radio control box. Rather than bulky ear phones, the user will now wear small ear plugs that integrate communications, and hearing protection. The COMTACT IV also features the same ambient listening capabilities as the COMTAC ACH; external sound is amplified for situational awareness, but the system shuts out loud tactical noises. Peltor will provide various sizes of the flanged earplugs to ensure a proper fit. There is no learning curve since the system’s control interface is exactly the same as previous models. However, there is also a new ‘boost’ feature that allows the user to manually override the audio input to pump up the the volume for those times when a higher audio output is necessary. Thoughtfully, the Comtact IV uses a AAA battery as a power source.

Gel ear pads help stabilize the headset and are attached with a proprietary 3M product that holds a stronger bond than hook and pile tape.

What is really cool about the new COMTAC IV is that it is also compatible with the Ops-Core ARC Kit (Accessory Rail Connector) for use with FAST (Future Assault Shell Technology) Helmets just like its predecessor the COMTAC III. In addition to a conversion kit, models will also be offered with the ARC adapter integrated directly from the factory. With either version, a microphone can installed either right or left.

The COMTAC IV is available now for preorder from Tidewater Tactical with deliveries beginning in June.

Guardian Sleep System

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

ADS unveiled the new Guardian Sleep System today at the Warrior Expo West at the San Diego Convention Center. Manufactured by Bluewater Defense the Guardian was developed after consultation with focus groups consisting of serving military personnel. Consisting of five components it incorporates several interesting design features.

The lightweight (30 deg) and heavyweight (0 deg) bags can be used alone or in tandem will accommodate temperatures down to -30 deg. Both bags have traditional top-mounted mummy-style zippers that are compatible with both righties and lefties and extend all the way from the chin to the top of the tapered foot box.

They both feature armholes allowing the user to conduct tasks from inside the bag. The bags also have pockets in the head area so that the user can stuff in padding for a makeshift pillow.

Insulated with Climashield, the bags feature a double layer offset quilting construction that eliminates cold spots. Additionally, they are treated with an antimicrobial to inhibit growth of the heebie jeebies keeping down on odor as well as bacteria.

The shelter bivy cover is manufactured from a 70D coated fabric keep down weight and bulk and features fully taped seams. While the shelter bivy cover comes with a single aluminum pole, there are ample tie down points so that it can be erected by attaching it to a stable object. The design integrates dual side vents which include no-see-um netting or can be fully opened for warm weather use and to help dissipate condensation caused by respiration and perspiration. What’s more, there is also a window to maintain situational awareness. Don’t let the black color fool you, production models will be available in a variety of colors.

The final two components are a mesh storage bag for admin storage to maintain loft when not in use as well as a compression stuffsack for field use.

Bates Footwear Partners with The Boot Campaign

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Unless you’ve been living on Mars, you’ve heard about The Boot Campaign by now. Their motto is simple; “When They Come Back, We Give Back”. Founded by five Southern ladies from Texas who call themselves “The Boot Girls”, The Boot Campaign provides a tangible way for Americans to show support of our troops and directly benefit our military through purchases of boots and other merchandise. Bates Footwear has teamed with them to add several footwear styles to the program. Proceeds from purchasing signature boots from The Boot Campaign are donated to their charity partners including the Lone Survivor Foundation, Not Alone, Wounded Wear, and Military Warriors Support Foundation.

Celebrities have taken up the cause and supporters range from country music stars Joe Nichols and Dolly Parton to TV and radio host Glenn Beck. Sports and Political figures such as The Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Cubs and the Governor
of Texas, Rick Perry have been spotted wearing the military fashioned boots to show their support. But they need everyone’s support if they are going to meet their goal of seeing one million Americans in a pair of Boot Campaign
“give back” boots. This isn’t just for uniformed professionals but rather for everyone and there are many styles to choose from.

As Ron Woznick, Vice President & General Manager for Bates, said; “Bates has the honor of providing footwear to thousands of Warfighters each year that selflessly protect our country. Their sacrifices and commitment are simply amazing. We are privileged to begin working more closely with The Boot Campaign, who has done a phenomenal job of drawing attention and supporting our military heroes.”
