Holmatro Rescue Equipment

Monday, July 9th, 2012

Holmatro is well known for their high pressure hydraulic rescue tools. However, they’ve got a couple of options for those of you who need to be able to get into confined spaces or remote areas where a hydraulic cable and generator/compressor are not available.

The self contained options rely on battery packs to produce a great deal of torque for spreading, cutting, pulling, and crushing duties. Depending on the model, they can offer a cutting force of up to 56,920 lbs

Holmatro also offers hand operated rescue tools. Depending on the model, these can spread and cut with a max cutting force of up to 56,920 lbs. They are lightweight and can even be used underwater.

Check the Holmatro line out at Warrior Expo East.

USMC Pack Video

Monday, July 9th, 2012

Slowly but surely, the pack once known as FILBE is making its way to the Fleet. Apparently, MARCORSYSCOM’s Program Manager Infantry Combat Equipment office has been able to take long enough away from making accusations against each other to produce this very informative video on what is now called simple the USMC Pack. It’s almost 30 minutes long so you may need to watch it in bites during breaks.

Velocity Systems has just released this new logo on Facebook. They’ve also announced that they are licensing the Helium Whisper technology from Blue Force Gear. We wonder what else they’ve got in store.

Black Diamond Wearable Modular Tactical System Chosen by USAF for Dismounted Close Air Support

Monday, July 9th, 2012

Under a Firm Fixed-Price Contract the US Air Force has chosen the Black Diamond Advanced Technology‘s Modular Tactical System (MTS) as their next-generation US Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) Operator Control System (OCS). Used by Special Operations Forces and Joint Terminal Attack Controllers, the Battlefield Air Operations (BAO) OCS is a wearable solution, incorporating a tactical vest with power management and a rugged computing device, designed for dismounted Close Air Support operations and communications control.

A component of the BAO kit, the MTS is a wearable, combat-enabled tactical communications tool providing situational awareness and blue force tracking. It also functions as a precision strike tool that facilitates control of multiple mission-critical peripherals on a central display, eliminating battery and equipment redundancies and lightening the load on the operator.

With the MTS at the core, the overall solution reduces the time required for the JTAC to prosecute a target and increases accuracy and efficiency by allowing the operator to maximize the existing radio and air-asset capabilities during dismounted operations.

I was able to try out a version of the MTS last year. It is an impressive system that is integrated directly into an armor carrier. What really impressed me was that it is right there in front of you and you don’t have to pack up a laptop to move. You can quickly transition back and forth between the screen and your surroundings to maintain situational awareness.

You can run it through the paces as well at this week’s Warrior Expo East. Additionally, ADS Inc offers the MTS for units and organizations that require on the move computing but who are not part of this program of record.

Newly Instituted Virginia Gun Laws

Monday, July 9th, 2012

The following bills passed in the Virginia General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Bob McDonnell went into effect on Sunday, July 1:

-Senate Bill 563 allows for the submission of an initial concealed handgun permit application via U.S. mail and also restricts the clerk and the circuit court from requesting or requiring any information from an applicant other than that which is allowed on the concealed handgun permit application.
-House Bill 22 establishes that no locality or entity may participate in a gun “buyback” program where individuals are given anything of value or money in exchange for surrendering a firearm to the locality, unless the governing body adheres to a strict procedure. Such procedure requires the governing body to first pass an ordinance authorizing the gun “buyback” and also requires that any locality holding gun “buybacks” must sell the firearms to a federally licensed firearms dealer “or be disposed of” in an appropriate manner if they cannot be sold.
-House Bill 940 and Senate Bill 323 repeal the prohibition on purchasing more than one handgun per month (gun rationing).
-House Bill 20 and Senate Bill 245 update the Emergency Powers statute by adding lawful carrying and transportation to the list of actions that cannot be prohibited during a declaration of emergency.
-House Bill 26 allows a court to waive a $25 dollar fine upon presentation of the permit to the court, if a person fails to display his concealed handgun permit when requested by a law enforcement officer.
-House Bill 375 strengthens the state firearms preemption law by prohibiting local governments from enacting or enforcing workplace rules that prevent an employee of that locality from storing a lawfully possessed firearm or ammunition in their locked personal motor vehicle.
-House Bill 754 and Senate Bill 67 removes the option for a locality to require an applicant for a concealed handgun permit to submit fingerprints with the initial application.

Daniel Winkler Folding Flint Striker Set

Monday, July 9th, 2012

I didn’t realize until The Blade Show that Master Bladesmith Daniel Winkler produced a fire starter set. Called the Folding Flint Striker Set, it’s based on the items carried by frontiersmen before the advent of the match. Winkler is well known for his fascination with early American history. In fact, he began making knives in order to outfit himself in the same equipment as an 18th century woodsman.

Set includes Knife, flint, char tin with char cloth, tinder with fat wood and a draw-string deer hide pouch. Additionally, he can provide a neck pouch for the knife at an additional charge. Just like all of Winkler’s other products knife pouches are hand built, to last.

Starting fires in a traditional manner is a skill that should be acquired and practiced. If I could only get one thing for my birthday, this would be it.

Check Out the New Talon Baton from ASP at Warrior Expo East

Sunday, July 8th, 2012

ASP is well known in the law enforcement community for their expandable batons and handcuffs. Recently, they released the new Talon baton. Referred to as Disc Loc during development, the new Talon uses two opposing discs that cam into an internal groove machined into each tube. According to ASP, lockout is simple, stable and secure. It features a padded grip and can be opened by grasping the tip or a simple flick of the baton up or down. And, retraction is as simple as pushing a button.

Be sure to see this and other ASP products this week at Warrior Expo East in Virginia Beach, Virginia. ASP products are available for agency and unit orders through ADS Inc.
