MATBOCK Monday || 1 – Day Assault Pack

Monday, January 8th, 2018

This is the new 1 Day Assault Pack from MATBOCK.

IMG_5953

Made of the MATBOCK Ghost Lite material, it is extremely lightweight, water resistant with YKK Uretek zippers throughout and offers some great new features. The main pouch is designed to hold a PRC-117G radio with a small admin pouch on the inside as well. On the top of the main pouch are two comms outlets made of medical grade gasket material to make a waterproof seal around even the largest radio antennas and smallest comms cables to prevent water entering the pack during inclement weather. The comms ports can be closed off when not in use. The shoulder yoke system is adjustable vertically to accommodate plates and any other gear possibly mounted on the back. The side pouches are large enough to hold a standard nalgene water bottle with compression straps and bungee closures at the top.

One of the coolest features of the back is the upper pouch. Upon opening, a secondary main pouch is stored that effectively doubles the capacity of the bag with another completely water resistant storage space. This secondary bag folds all the way open and is lined on the inside with loop velcro offering a great storage space for extra med kit, SSE collected on target, or even just an extra puffy layer. The pouch attaches at the bottom of the pack as well to ensure it doesn’t move around when worn.

The pack only weighs 1.9 lbs and is available immediately for $380.00 MSRP.

Meyers & Co., Inc. is pleased to announce that the MAWL-DA has been selected by the French National Gendarmerie’s elite police tactical unit, the GIGN, as their official individual NIR/VIS weapon laser and illuminator. The GIGN is currently upgrading legacy systems, and has begun to integrate new technologies with the unit’s available weapons platforms.

After evaluating various laser aiming and illumination systems through rigorous testing, and in real-world scenarios, the MAWL-DA was proven to be the superior solution, and was selected for formal procurement and deployment within the unit. In addition to the MAWL-DA’s selection by the GIGN, other units in France, and other European SOF units have adopted it for use in their respective operations.

The GIGN is the elite Police Tactical Unit of the French National Gendarmerie. Its missions include counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, surveillance of national threats, protection of government officials, and targeting organized crime. It is renowned for its selection and implementation of innovative technology and tactics, using a comprehensive suite of both small arms solutions, and weapon enabling systems. The unit’s selection of the MAWL-DA as a tool for mission success is notable in light of the GIGN’s pedigree, and reputation as a premiere SOF unit. B.E. Meyers & Co. looks forward to the MAWL-DA’s service with the GIGN as NIR/VIS pointing and illumination system which will assist in the unit’s response to both domestic and international threats.

The MAWL-DA (Modular Advanced Weapon Laser – Direct Action) is a high-power infrared and visible green aiming and illumination laser for individual carbines. Offering improved ergonomics, interface, and performance, the MAWL-DA has been designed from the ground up around the needs of the modern night fighter.

Engineered to address the shortcomings of common laser devices in use with both military and law enforcement, the MAWL® incorporates cutting edge VCSEL technology which eliminates the current problem of inconsistent and granular, speckled illumination. This unparalleled beam quality is leveraged with multiple modes of divergence and power, based on the ideal settings for any operational environment: Close Range, Mid Range, or Long Range.

Salomon Announces Upgraded XA Forces Mid GTX Shoe

Monday, January 8th, 2018

Although originally designed as a trail runner, the XA Forces Mid has become the heavy lifter in the Salomon Forces line due to its lightweight construction which offers a great deal of ankle support and foot stability.

When the Forces line first launched, they took commercial footwear which were popular with military and LE customers and essentially gave them a new paintjob. What they found over the past few years is that the Forces customer subjects the shoes to situations that they were not originally designed for. After analyzing the returns, Salomon designers embarked on a significant upgrade to this popular shoe. In a rare peek into the design process, Salmon shared this drawing with us. The final product differs slightly.

There are specific issues which have been addressed. For instance, they’ve introduced the same material used in the Quest 4D. Additionally, they changed the construction to introduce double and even triple stitching. They’ve also eliminated overlaps of fabric wherever possible because thenedges of fabric was getting caught while riding Quads and separating.

Finally, Solomon improved the sole and introduced a wider toe box.

The XA Forces Mid is available with or without a Gore-Tex lining in US sizes U.S. 4.5 to 12.5, plus 13.5 and 14 in Black, Coyote and Ranger Green (GTX version only).

Below is their full press release.

Improved strength, durability the focus in this key Forces range model

Salomon has revealed a new, upgraded XA Forces Mid GTX shoe, the centerpiece of the brand’s Forces range. If you liked the brand’s XA Pro Mid, the earlier version of this shoe, you will appreciate the improvements made to the new XA Forces Mid GTX. Available beginning January 2018, it features several improvements over its predecessor, which was the very first shoe that the brand developed specifically for military use. In the GORE-TEX® version, it will be available in black, coyote brown and ranger green. The shoe is also available in a non-GORE-TEX® version offering a more breathable variant. The non-GORE-TEX® version is available in black and coyote brown.

Now in unisex models (available in half sizes from U.S. 4.5 to 12.5, plus 13.5 and 14.5), the design goal of the XA Pro Mid GTX was to improve strength and durability. It will use the same fabric found on the Quest 4D Boot, which is four times more durable compared to the previous fabric when it comes to tear strength, and has been put to the test in the lab and on deployment. To make it stronger, the shoe now has a single-layer construction, reducing the overlapping of materials. Formerly a single stitched shoe, the new version has double and triple stitching for stronger seem construction.

The outsole also has a more durable design. A new layer adds to the sole’s thickness and additional rubber with deeper lugs provides more contact with the ground. A break in the design of the heel helps with climbing, while a rubber pad on the medial side of the shoe aids in protection. The toebox has also been made slightly roomier than in the previous version.

AFSOC Combat Aviation Advisors Adopt Brown Beret

Sunday, January 7th, 2018

Air Force Special Operations Command’s Combat Aviation Advisors unveiled the newly minted Charcoal Brown beret during a special ceremony at Duke Field yesterday. The 492nd Special Operations Wing says the beret, which is only authorized for wear on AFSOC installations, is a visual reminder to the wearer of each member’s personal and professional responsibility to serve the mission and partner forces with integrity, selflessness and tenacity.

Some might see this as an Air Force “me too”, following the lead of the US Army 1st Security Forces Assistance Brigade’s adoption of a Brown beret. While the Army originally planned to issue an Olive Drab beret, just recently the Chief of Staff of the Army, GEN Mark Milley announced they’d wear a Brown beret instead. However, the CAA community claims that they presented the Brown beret to President Trump On 18 July of this year, long before the Army made the Brown beret announcement. Looks like the Army is following AFSOC’s lead.

A2B96BB8-6D49-41F6-BC93-C4E4D2B4E354

The Brown beret is only for wear by Air Force personnel assigned as Combat Aviation Advisors in AFSOC’s 6th Special Operation Squadron. These billets are limited to 18 Air Force Specialty Codes. Additionally, the Brown beret may only be worn while on AFSOC installations.

The wearer of the charcoal brown beret is accountable to be professional, mature, trustworthy, a trade expert, and most importantly, a team player committed to mission accomplishment. The color signifies fertile soil and reminds the wearer daily to look for potential where others see barrenness. It signifies grit, hard work and commitment to transform potential into capability by, with and through our foreign partners…”Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere.”

Other USAF careerfields with berets include:

CCT/STO – Scarlet
PJ/CRO – Maroon
TACP/ALO – Black
Weather Parachutists – Grey
Security Force – Blue
SERE Specialists – Sage Green

USAF-Berets-large

This image came from the Air Force and still isn’t quite right. For instance, Special Operations Weather Technicians have a metal beret device and no longer wear the DUI of the ARSOF units they support. At least the beret colors are all correct.

Interestingly, in 2011, the USAF EOD careerfield petitioned the Air Force Uniform Board for award of the Tan beret, but that request was denied.

For the most part, USAF berets are for careerfields and not units, like in the Army. For example, USAF parachutists in numerous careerfields serving in jump billets do not wear berets. This beret is an exception, as is the Sky Blue beret worn by upper class cadets at the US Air Force Academy solely while conducting BCT for first year cadets.
