VSS Launches Satellite Antenna Website

High Angle Solutions – Silva Tactical Compasses

Three entrepreneurial brothers. One great invention. In 1933, Björn, Alvar and Arvid Kjellström invented the first ever liquid-filled compass, and the Silva began. Not only was it the first compass of its kind, but is also set the global standard for how navigation works.

From this beginning, 85 years ago, Silva have grown significantly.  As part of that expansion they have been making compasses for militaries all over the world for a number of decades.  This has predominantly been based on the Expedition 4, which was due an update.  Following development work with the Royal Marines and other elements of the UK military Silva have now launched an updated range of compasses.

The new range includes a more robust base plate and bezel which address the needs of a challenging operational environment.  It also brings in line a number of interesting technologies including prismatic elements for commanders and global needles for expeditionary forces required to deploy anywhere across the globe.  Included in the package are lanyards with distance measuring scales for 1:25000 and 1:50000.  They also allow measurement in both mils and degrees enabling greater accuracy and the passage of accurate information for fires as well as air.

PEO Soldier Checks Out LSAT

Originally an AAI (now part of Textron Systems) science project, under the auspices of several different government programs, the Lightweight Small Arms Technology weapon and its Cased Telescoped has been under development for decades (and untold millions in development costs).

Here, BG Anthony “Tony” Potts, Program Executive Officer Soldier, fires the 5.56mm Cased Telescoped Light Machine Gun Feb. 14 during a visit to Textron Systems.

The CT LMG with 1,000 rounds weighs 28.5 pounds vs. an M249 with 1,000 rounds weighing 48.9 pounds. That’s pretty impressive. The favored technology for the Army’s upcoming Next Generation Squad Automatic Weapon program, is the TC round which will not fire from existing weapons in the Army’s inventory and current ammunition will not fire from the LSAT weapon. Although, the ammunition is lighter, you’ve got to have the right weapon to fire it. Conversely, current ammunition could also be lightened by going to a polymer case. And then, there’s the whole issue of reducing stoppages on LSAT, which requires the weapon to be dismantled.

Can’t wait to see how it performs in source selection. The IC criteria set the bar pretty high.

New Scarging Handle Colors from Kinetic Development Group

KDG has improved their popular FNH SCAR Charging Handle, The “Scarging handle” and are now offering it in both Flat Dark Earth and matte Black Cerakote. The product is constructed of low carbon 1080 steel, heat treated and finished with a durable black, mil-spec finish before having the rugged Cerakote finish applied. KDG Scarging handle fits both 5.56 and 7.62 NATO versions of the SCAR, and installs in seconds.The design features a radius-faced grasping area, and swept geometry. This allows the user to achieve a more solid grasp when manipulating the bolt, aided by a deeply textured surface. Installation allows for easier charging, clearing of stoppages, and administratively locking the firearm bolt to the rear by allowing the shooter to gain more leverage on the charging handle. Shooters can choose between left or right side installation to match their hand dominance, and can rotate the Scarging handle to either downward or upward sweep. The downward sweep protects the hand from busted knuckles caused by optics mounts and other accessories by keeping it down and away from the weapon’s top. The increased grasping surface benefits those with larger hands or when wearing gloves.  The Scarging handle can alternatively be installed with the curve upward, which provides the user a slick side receiver to prevent snagging or “SCAR Thumb” (i.e. having the reciprocating charging handle strike your hand if using a magwell hold or unconventional shooting position). All Scarging Handles are constructed of low carbon 1080 steel, heat treated and finished with a durable black, mil-spec finish. The accessory protrudes less distance from the receiver than the factory unit, and is profiled to be extremely snag-resistant when wearing body armor or other gear. TNVC Releases Thermal Remote Battery and Cradle

The TNVC Thermal Remote Battery (TRB) is an external rechargeable battery for thermal imagers and weapon sights.  Utilizing a 6700mAh battery, the TRB can provide over 13 hours of power to your thermal device.  This allows you to hunt all night without needing to replace expensive batteries.  At the end of the hunt, simply plug the battery into a USB power source to recharge and prep for night two!

The TRB comes with a form-fitting, slimline polymer cradle that attaches to standard M1913 Picatinny Rail.  The polymer cradle is milspec impact-resistant to protect the battery from field abuse.  It mounts offset to the rail, to keep the package slimmer to the weapon rail or scope.  The cradle features cutouts to display current battery charge, access to the power button, and an opening for the recharge cable port.  This allows you to keep the battery in the cradle while recharging (it can also be easily removed from the cradle for recharge, allowing you to keep the cradle secured to the weapon).

The TRB replaces the need to use disposable batteries or short-life internal rechargeable batteries in thermal systems.  Operation is simple: Charge the TRB battery until all four charge lights are lit, insert the battery into the cradle where it seats with the power-out cable (power-out cable is permanently affixed in cradle), plug power out cable into thermal device and press the power button on the battery.  The TRB can be attached to thermal devices with disposable batteries installed.  After the thermal device uses up the installed batteries, the user simply turns on the TRB to continue the hunt.
