Bridgedale Introduces First Waterproof Sock Range

Tuesday, April 9th, 2019

Britain’s number one outdoor performance sock brand, Bridgedale, is introducing its first 100% waterproof sock range called Storm this spring.

Developed to provide wet weather protection and day long comfort, it combines Bridgedale’s unique FusionTech™ with a HydroTech™ Waterproof, Breathable and Windproof membrane.  The new Storm range has been designed and tested to perform to the highest standards in the wettest conditions when hiking, biking or running.

Continuing to build on Bridgedale’s century-long sock making heritage, the 100% Waterproof Storm sock guarantees foot protection and comfort on the wettest trails. Even though Bridgedale has been keeping feet warm, dry and protected for many years, providing a good level of water resistance, this is the brand’s first 100% Waterproof sock range.

Using the latest production processes, the Storm sock combines advanced yarn technology with progressive design to ensure the waterproof, extremely breathable and windproof Storm sock never lets down any outdoor enthusiast.

Inner Sock

The next-to-the-skin inner sock, made from up to 60% Merino Wool, that’s renowned for its anti-bacterial and anti-odour properties, is combined with wicking synthetic fibres to deliver a stable temperature and move moisture from the skin’s surface. The lining features a terry loop underfoot cushion that extends around both the toes and over the heel to ensure comfortable feet in wet conditions.

HydroTech™ membrane

The three-layer construction features at its core, a Waterproof, Breathable, high stretch and Windproof HydroTech™ permeable membrane, which when laminated to the inner and outer layers creates a 100% Waterproof stretchable and good fitting sock.

Bridgedale is confident that, after a three-year rigorous testing period, it can confidently guarantee the minimum specifications for the HydroTech™ membrane*:

Membrane breathability: moisture permeability >12,000mg/m*m/24h

Membrane waterproofness: Hydrostatic head >8,000mm

Outer Sock

The Nylon outer protects the waterproof sock against abrasion from footwear. LYCRA® provides excellent stretch to ensure the sock is easy to pull on and off and guaranteeing a snug, comfortable, high performance fit and a sock that won’t fall down during activities.  As well as LYCRA® running through the inner and outer sock, it is also added around the arch of the foot to keep the sock firmly in position, reducing any bunching or rucking inside the shoe or boot that could cause irritation.

The Storm sock is available in three lengths:

Ankle: fitting just above ankle bone, this length is perfect for running or walking in wet conditions

Boot: designed to fit around the middle of the calf, this length keeps the lower leg warm and dry and can be paired with waterproof trousers or gaiters to prevent water ingress at the top. Boot length is ideal for mountaineering, hillwalking and mountain biking.

Knee: giving full lower leg coverage and protection, this maximum length is perfect for wading through streams or rivers or running or riding in shorts when the weather turns colder.

The three weights available are:

Lightweight

Close fitting and designed for activities where maximum breathability and minimum insulation is required.  Perfect for warmer weather, high octane activities such as mountain biking and trail running. Pair with Bridgedale’s Coolmax Liner to keep feet fresher for longer.

Midweight

With a terry cushioned footbed and ankle, this sock is idea for outdoor activities where a good balance of warmth and breathability is required, from biking and running to hiking and mountaineering

Heavyweight

This sock has full terry cushioning throughout and is perfect for cold weather activities such as winter walking, hiking and biking.  Pair with Bridgedale’s Thermal Liner for more extreme cold weather activities such as winter mountaineering and multi-day expeditions.

Max Talk Monday 17: Immediate Action Drill: Fight Through! Live Fire Drill

Monday, April 8th, 2019

This is the seventeenth installment of ‘Max Talk Monday’ which shares select episodes from a series of instructional videos. Max Velocity Tactical (MVT) has established a reputation on the leading edge of tactical live fire and force on force training. MVT is dedicated to developing and training tactical excellence at the individual and team level.

This video is a drill from the Texas Class 2019. It may look a little different from what many would expect for an immediate action drill, but specific training objectives are being exercised. This drill simulates, using a five man team, an aggressive immediate action drill for surprise enemy contact, in this case flank (right), best for use in close country. In this drill, there are eight mannikin targets hidden in positions of cover / concealment – there are no typical targets, simply the manikins concealed in natural firing positions beside / behind trees and scrub. .

The specific training sequence / objectives of the drill are:
-React to contact (flank right).
-Conduct a ‘cover shoot’, designed to kill enemy in their concealed positions.
-‘Fight Through’ to the limit of advance (LOA).

Specifically, the fight through is being conducted as a skirmish line, with buddy pairs operating independently but in conjunction with each other, controlled by the centrally located team leader.
‘Move / Fire’ is being conducted, a different technique to standard fire and movement, where fire is generated continuously both when static and while advancing. In close country, Move / Fire is a technique that in this case is used to generate a large amount of continuous fire to aid a smaller team in winning the firefight.

Detailed explanations can be found in the MVT Tactical Manual: Small Unit Tactics.

Max is a tactical trainer and author, a lifelong professional soldier with extensive military experience. He served with British Special Operations Forces, both enlisted and as a commissioned officer; a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Max served on numerous operational deployments, and also served as a recruit instructor. Max spent five years serving as a paramilitary contractor in both Iraq and Afghanistan; the latter two years working for the British Government in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

SOCOM Begins Procurement Of Communications Accessory Suite Land

Monday, April 8th, 2019

Over the weekend, the US Army’s Program Management Office for Special Operations Forces Survival, Support and Equipment Services issued two J&As for the purchase of Communications Accessory Suite Land (CASL) components via GSA. CASL was envisioned as a technologically advanced Communications Accessory Suite compatible and interoperable with the Next Generation Handheld (NGHH) radio (and other legacy radio systems), consisting of a Push-To-Talk, high noise Headset (circumaural or in-the-ear) and associated cables.

Specifically, SOCOM plans to purchase the Ops-Core AMP Communications Headset, Invisio X5 Headset and V60 PTT.

Although, both components of the system were selected almost a year ago, there were apparently software issues which needed to be worked out with SOF radio manufacturer Harris Corp, before fielding could begin.

Global Ordnance LLC Acquires Chemring Military Products Inc

Monday, April 8th, 2019

Global Ordnance LLC (“Global Ordnance”) announced it has completed the acquisition (“Acquisition”) of Chemring Military Products Inc. (“CMP”), a subsidiary company of Chemring Group PLC.

Global Ordnance is a veteran-owned small business that responds to the needs arising from critical missions of the US Government and its allies around the world. Since its inception in 2013, Global Ordnance has earned a reputation as a trusted and reliable partner of its customers, to include the US Special Operations Command and the US Army.

CMP procures and delivers worldwide US-standard and non-standard ammunition and weapons systems. In FY2018, CMP generated revenues exceeding $111M with an operating profit of $10.5M.

Both Global Ordnance and CMP have been long-time suppliers of non-standard ammunition (NSA) and non-standard weapons (NSW) to US and foreign government entities. Today’s acquisition of CMP by Global Ordnance marks the synergy of two well-established organizations with complementary strengths and expertise. By absorbing the staff and contracts of CMP into its organization, Global Ordnance aims to improve its already stellar reputation as a reliable and dependable US Government business partner and a leading supplier of NSA and NSW. On a larger scale as a result of this purchase, the focus for Global Ordnance going forward remains on providing unmatched service and products to its current customers.

While today’s Acquisition magnifies the depth and breadth of an already strong NSA/NSW team and places Global Ordnance atop the NSA/NSW partner spectrum, it also allows Global Ordnance to broaden the extent of activities in the commercial space which the company entered in earnest within the last two years. Since then, Global Ordnance has become an exclusive US distributor of already established brands, such as Grand Power of Slovakia and Australian Outback Ammunition of Australia. The company plans to continue growing its presence and strengthening its competitive impact in the commercial US market.

NETT Marines Bridging the Gap Between the Past and Future of Amphibious Combat

Monday, April 8th, 2019

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. —

At its core, any Marine Corps New Equipment Training Team is responsible for-as the name suggests-arming Marines with the knowledge and skills they need to operate and maintain new equipment to ensure Marines’ future success on the battlefield. When new equipment is fielded, the NETT provide the initial training to experienced legacy system operators and maintainers to help get them acquainted with the new system in the shortest time possible.

When the new system is the Amphibious Combat Vehicle-game-changing not only in the amphibious capabilities it provides to Marines, but also in that it’s replacing a nearly 50-year-old legacy system-the NETT are in a unique position to bridge the gap between the past and future of amphibious combat in the Corps. Currently, most new equipment training teams are comprised of civilian subject matter experts from Industry, the ACV NETT is comprised primarily of amphibious assault Marines who are able to apply their experience and expertise in operating and maintaining the legacy vehicle to operating and maintaining the new one.

“It’s pretty much 100 percent preparation for the next evolution,” said Staff Sgt. Kevin Wheeler, lead operational instructor on the NETT, of his team’s role. “All of us here on the NETT have years of experience operating the legacy [Assault Amphibious Vehicle]. I think that our collective experience and influence is important, especially in informing the future of our community. That’s our number one job.”

Though the NETT falls under the Virginia-based Advanced Amphibious Assault program office at Program Executive Officer Land Systems, the office responsible for acquiring and fielding the system, the team itself is housed at the Amphibious Vehicle Test Branch at Camp Pendleton, Calif., maximizing the team’s ability to spend time on and become proficient with operating and maintaining the vehicle.

To aid Marines’ transition from the legacy to the new platform, the NETT faces the challenge of infusing old practices into new Standard Operating Procedures and Tactics, Techniques and Procedures for the ACV.

“During the operational assessment, we realized that some of the tactics we’re used to with the AAV don’t work with the ACV,” said Wheeler. “We’re taking into account our old doctrine with the AAV, and seeing how some of those tactics, TTPs and SOPs can translate to the ACV [to make the transition easier for Marines].”

On the vehicular maintenance side, NETT Marines also help design the maintenance course. Currently, the team is busy helping the program office prepare for a four-month logistics demonstration-a comprehensive event evaluating the maintainability and sustainability of the vehicle-scheduled for this fall.

“One of the ways we’re verifying the Technical Manual for the ACV is by having the maintenance team complete over 1,400 maintenance tasks using the TM as a guide,” said Staff Sgt. Justin Hanush, maintenance lead instructor for the ACV. “This will help us when preparing the maintenance course. Ultimately, we want to ensure that Marines are successful when the vehicle hits the fleet.”

While the NETT’s main role is training Marines on maintaining and operating the ACV, the team also licenses drivers and, as operators of the vehicle, are integral participants in the rigorous operational, logistical and evaluative vehicle tests initiated by PM AAA. Having experienced amphibious assault Marines on the NETT has been extremely beneficial to the program office, particularly during operational assessments and testing.

“The Marines have assisted us greatly with understanding how the amphibious community operates, especially on water,” said James Aurilio, Manpower, Personnel and Training lead for PM AAA. “Operating a land vehicle in water is a unique experience, and they brought that experience with them. There’s a lot about doing that that, those of us who don’t do it would never understand or wouldn’t think to ask [during testing]. They’ve been stellar and have helped us out a lot.”

The NETT will start training Marines from Delta Company, 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, in January 2020. Delta Company will be the first amphibious assault crews to be trained on the new vehicle. Upon completion of training, the NETT will help guide the Delta Company Marines as they participate in tests assessing the effectiveness of the first set of low-rate initial production ACVs. PM AAA anticipates receiving the first set of low-rate production vehicles this summer.
