Direct Action Presents the Core Assaulter Setup

Direct Action introduces the Core Assaulter Setup – a reference configuration designed for frontline operators without a dedicated specialist role, operating in full kit under changing operational tempo. This setup is not a universal solution or the only correct configuration. It’s a reference built to demonstrate system logic, capability, and versatility: load carriage, access, control, and speed.

The setup can be stripped down for low-profile operations, expanded for longer missions, or adapted to unit SOPs and team standards. One principle remains constant: the gear works for the operator, not the other way around.

Built for Operational Tempo

The Core Assaulter Setup is designed for operators in environments where contact is real and situations can evolve beyond the original plan. Typical operations include buildings, vehicles, and confined spaces – often at night and under time pressure.

Mission scope includes:

    Direct action (DA)
    CQB entries and exits
    Securing and searching
    Detentions
    Covering evacuations
    Rapid transitions between mobility and static positions

When operational tempo increases, three factors become critical: time, predictability, and repeatability of movement. The setup allows operators to move naturally within the mission rhythm, without unnecessary adjustments, gear interference, or chaos.

System-Based Configuration

The Core Assaulter Setup is built around the SPITFIRE MK II Plate Carrier with a Rapid Access Cummerbund and Spitfire Cutaway System. Key elements include:

    AR mag pouches
    SPITFIRE Assault Panel on the back
    Warhawk Modular Gun Belt MKII
    Rope Bag as an additional operational element

Each component follows a clear placement logic: gear remains organized, accessible one-handed under stress (even with gloves), and stable even under heavy load. The setup is fully compatible with the Direct Action modular system, letting operators adapt their configuration depending on mission profile and operational requirements.

Direct Action: Individual-as-a-system Approach

Direct Action treats the operator’s loadout as a system, not a collection of unrelated products. Plate carriers, belts, panels, pouches, and accessories form a modular ecosystem configurable by mission, role, and environment.

Bundeswehr Birds Group – The New Innovation Network

The newly established Birds Group at the Heer command, the staff of the inspector, combines ideas from the associations with the innovation actors of the Bundeswehr.


In the future, the Birds Group will bundle the innovation potential of the German Army and put it under a uniform leadership. It is important to make new technologies, processes and ideas ready for use in a short time.(Bundeswehr/Marco Dorow)

The Birds Group becomes the central point of contact for unmanned systems, technical innovations and tactical testing in the field of land forces. The “look from above”, which provides an overview of a broad picture of the situation and provides the basis for decision-making, gives the group its name.

The structure that is being created is a decisive step towards more commitment and technological security for the future. The task of the Birds Group is to strengthen the innovation culture of the Bundeswehr through networking, expertise and openness to new solutions. How can this be realized?

Benefits for the entire Bundeswehr

The Birds Group is a hub at the highest management level in the army, which identifies innovations faster, bundles, coordinates with the other players outside the army and brings them into the area. The entire Bundeswehr is to benefit from this later, because successful approaches from the force become visible more quickly and can then be transferred to other areas. The German Army thus strengthens its role as a driver of innovation and puts the important ideas and suggestions that already exist in the force under a uniform leadership.

The Birds Group does not replace the responsibility of leadership at all levels as well as in the respective professionalism. In the future, it will promote exchange with key innovation actors of the Bundeswehr through its leadership mission and will make it easier to make new technologies, processes and ideas ready for use in a short time. In this way, it strengthens the ability of all sub-forces to go into future positions in a more modern, networked and action-proof manner.

Israel MOD to Procure Thousands of Drones from XTEND Worth Millions of Dollars

The Israel Ministry of Defense (IMOD) Defence Procurement Directorate (DPD) announced that XTEND has won a tender, worth millions of dollars, to supply thousands of FPV (First Person View) drones to the IDF Ground Forces, equipped with advanced technology. The project is being led by the IDF’s Ground Forces and Technological and Logistics Directorate.

Led by the DPD’s Deputy for Air and Naval Procurement Unit, this domestic ‘Blue and White’ procurement is part of IMOD Director General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram’s comprehensive strategy to strengthen Israel’s defense production capacity and local industries while maintaining full support for IDF operational needs now and in the intense decade ahead.

The drones will be delivered to the IDF over the coming months alongside comprehensive training and instruction programs provided by the company, and are expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Ground Forces while delivering optimal solutions to modern warfare challenges.

US Air Force Global Strike Command Reinstates the M18 Pistol

Confirms the safety, reliability, and durability
of the P320-based M18

Newington, NH (August 27, 2025). SIG SAUER applauds the USAF and the Global Strike Command in their diligence and expediency in the safety inspection related to the investigation into the tragic incident at F.E. Warren Air Force Base.

We remain in direct contact with the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) leadership during this process and will continue to work with them as they return the M18 to service and provide Airmen with safe, reliable, and effective weapon systems.

As affirmed by the AFGSC, the M18 was specifically designed and rigorously tested to meet stringent requirements unique to the military. The AFGSC command-wide inspection showed that no weapon discharges were attributed to a malfunction and the M18 can safely and reliably accomplish their missions across the globe.

We value this further confirmation of the safety, reliability, and durability of the P320-based M18 and look forward to continuing our partnership with the USAF. The U.S. military selected the M18 and M17 pistols for their safety and extreme reliability. The AFGSC’s comprehensive M18 investigation and inspection validates the platform’s military suitability. Electronic Warfare and Drones: Why Unmanned Platforms Need AI Capabilities

A recent Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) in Alaska tested low-cost attack drones under heavy EW (Electronic Warfare) environment. UAS prototypes struggled with one crash after losing signal, and the other missed its target and caught fire. These challenges highlight the growing complexity of deploying unmanned systems in contested, EW environments, especially when GPS and Comms are jammed.

Rheinmetall’s PTAL – The Laser Light Module for Handguns

Rheinmetall’s new Pistol Tactical Aiming Laser (PTAL) is a compact lightweight attachment module specially designed for handguns. It is made by Rheinmetall Soldier Electronics in Stockach on Lake Constance.

For target illumination, an infrared close-range illuminator and white light are available to the operator for use in all operational situations. In addition, the PTAL is equipped with an IR aiming laser and a visible (selectable red or green) aiming laser, integrated next to each other in a laser block.

Despite its compact dimensions (L/W/H 76 x 45 x 30 mm) and low weight of just 115 g, the newly developed module produces a powerful laser output of up to laser class 3B, permanently controlled via a monitor diode and electronically regulated. The build-on module features a dongle interface for an eye-safe training mode and effective force-on-force training.

Besides ergonomic, two-handed fingertip operability, the module can be attached to the weapon in various ways and can be adapted to different holster types. The single CR123 battery can be exchanged via the lamp head when the module is mounted. Furthermore, the device offers the great advantage of not being subject to America’s strict ITAR export regulations.

Rheinmetall VTAL – the Compact and Modular Laser Module for Special Forces

The modular laser module VTAL from Rheinmetall Soldier Electronics, designed especially for special forces, is extremely robust and compact. The “Variable Tactical Aiming Laser” is suitable for use on today’s shorter assault rifles as well as on other small arms.

Watertight, light and stable, the metal housing has a built-in MIL STD 1913/STANAG 4694 interface. Because the VTAL protrudes only about 25 mm above the mounting rail, it does not interfere with the line of sight during conventional optical aiming. The VTAL features an extremely strong visible red dot laser, an infrared dot laser, and an infrared illuminator. The superior quality of the lasers and their consistency of form enhances the user’s situational awareness in all operating environments. Importantly, the VTAL is compatible with all standard image intensifier devices. The fully integrated laser block is aligned at the factory, making adjustment on the weapon simple. The VTAL can also be configured according to customer requirements.

Owing to the device’s modern design, the operator can adjust the intensity of both dot lasers with the aid of a colour-coded cable switch. The illuminator can be focused using a separate control knob. Furthermore, the VTAL can be coupled with other tactical weapon lights and can be operated using a combined two button cable switch.

Rheinmetall offers the “TL-MissionLight” as such a separate weapon torch. It is available in a standard version with a dual LED head and a special version for hostage rescue operations. Typically, the LM-VTAL and one of the two weapon lights are mounted on the weapon. The robust design assures stability and dependability. The system can withstand the worst battlefield conditions and is waterproof to a depth of 30 metres. This way, operators know they can rely on the device at all times.

Rheinmetall’s laser light package is already in use with various special operation formations. Among others it is a component of the Bundeswehr’s Special Forces Assault Rifle (“Sturmgewehr Spezialkräfte Bundeswehr, leicht”).
