Thyrm Introduces the VariArc

Monday, October 21st, 2019

A helmet light mount with 360 rotational indexing
Sunnyvale, CA – Thyrm is excited to announce the launch of their latest product; the VariArc™ Helmet Mount. Featuring positive indexing at forward, umbrella and admin angles, the VariArc mount directs light right where you need it with a quick twist.

Conceived by Josh Jackson (SWAT-LEO) at LMS Defense, with input from other SWAT-team leaders and active-duty special operations soldiers, the VariArc helmet mount features locking teeth biased to the forward position, keeping your light aligned for the most critical uses; but with a firm twist, the VariArc mount unlocks and rotates through 8 additional lower-force index points for administrative tasks and diffused lighting options. Its small footprint and low-profile keep things tidy and the 1913 picatinny rail allows for maximum compatibility with visible and IR lights. Its reinforced polymer construction is built to remain fully functional through extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, sand, water, drops on concrete, and other rough handling.

“We wanted to develop a no compromises mounting solution that allowed our customers to mount one light and use it for all their needs” said Andrew Frazier, CEO of Thyrm, “ and it’s been great to see initial production units already in use with both elite law enforcement and military personnel across the globe.”

Features include

-Positively locks in the forward index position
-Picatinny accessory rail with 3 slots and 4 ridges
-Retention holes on both ends for dummy wiring critical gear
-Durable, reinforced polymer construction with steel hardware
-Compatible with dovetail-style helmet rails
-Available in black and flat dark earth colorways

As with all Thyrm products, VariArc mounts are designed and made in the USA.

SCUBAPRO Sunday – Midway

Sunday, October 20th, 2019

The movie Midway is one of my favorite WW2 movies. They used a lot of real footage from the battle that was shot by director John Ford during the actual battle, (He also directed, They were Expendable, and Mister Roberts) you can tell it was old footage, but it does helps tell the story. So far Hollywood has not done a great job “remaking” movie or retelling the same story. They killed Red Dawn. Hopefully they use the same mindset that was used for Saving private Ryan, Band of Brothers and even Fury.

AUSA 19 – MOOG’s Reconfigurable Integrated Weapons Platforms Features PASEO Sight by SAFRAN Optics 1

Thursday, October 17th, 2019

Weapon integrator MOOG has incorporated the SAFRAN Optics 1 PASEO Modular Advanced Stabilized Sight on their Reconfigurable Integrated – Weapons Platform.

RIwP is a remote turret which can be configured in multiple ways including for multiple missiles, direct fire weapons and sight combinations. All direct fire weapons feature reload under armor for increased crew protection.

RIwP is currently being offered as an upgrade to the US Army’s Stryker as well for the SHort Range Air Defense system.

PASEO incorporates day color HDTV cameras, cooled thermal imager, and eye-safe laser rangefinder. The day cameras allow continuous, motionless zoom. Images are always stabilized, even while on the move. The system provides panoramic scan mode for 360 deg coverage and when connected to an Inertial Navigation System, threat geo-location. It can also be armored for increased survivability.

Dual PASEO systems are currently deployed on the Cockerill 3000 series vehicle. One is used by the vehicle commander and the second by the gunner to allow independent Target acquisition and overall situational awareness.

AUSA 19 – WL Gore & Assoc Integrated Cabling for Soldier Systems

Wednesday, October 16th, 2019

I first saw Gore’s Integrated Cabling for Soldier Systems at DSEI last month in London. I was quite pleased to see that they had brought the technology across the pond to the US. Gore’s cable systems are across the board, lighter, more flexible and less prone to breakage than alternatives, thanks to the ePTFE exteriors. Using them to provide power and databus within an armored vest, was a logical step.

The armor vest itself was manufactured by WL Gore partner brand Costas Siamidis, which is based in Greece. The actual Gore cabling is inside of this vest. They are connector agnostic, which is important considering there are at least four different connectors on the market.

This is what their cable bundles look like and they will configure them how needed. Compared to other systems, they are less than half the weight and much less bulky.
