Ops-Core Visit – A Trip Down Memory Lane

Tuesday, June 24th, 2014

15

Yesterday, I had an opportunity to visit Ops-Core’s new factory in Boston for a personal tour by founder David Rogers. I saw a whole slew of cool things but first, I thought you’d enjoy a glimpse at some of the items in their library.

The shelves in the lobby contain a variety of head protection items from a variety of sources, but the developmental Artisent and Ops- Core artifacts in particular, are awesome. In addition to a couple of OFW/FFW models there are also technology demonstrators with early versions of features that are now standard in Ops-Core helmets.

Look for additional coverage later this week.

Crye Precision – AirFrame ATX Now Available

Tuesday, June 17th, 2014

Crye ATX 1

The AirFrame ATX, which debuted just this January at SHOT Show 2014, is now available on the Crye Precision website. Aramid-based, the ATX meets NIJ Level IIIA ballistic requirements and is intended for use with Law Enforcement. It features the AirFrame standard overlapping vented shell design for passive cooling, and an Ops-Core H-Nape Head-Loc retention system. Compatible with all AirFrame accessories and common ear-pro systems.

Yes, this is an aramid helmet meaning it is going to be a little heavier and thicker than the original PE in the AirFrame helmet. But, this also makes it less expensive for LE users. Available in Black, Tan, and OD Green. Made in the USA from US materials.

TNVC – Wilcox FLIR M24 Recon Helmet Mount Adapter

Saturday, May 24th, 2014

M24_mount_s1_zpsf1207ac2

Wilcox Industries has developed a helmet mount adapter for the popular FLIR Recon M24 Thermal Monocular. Precision machined from lightweight aerospace aluminum, the FLIR Recon mount comes complete with interfaces for both dovetail and bayonet horn helmet mounts, which can be swapped without tools.

A dovetail shoe bolts to the 1/4-20 threaded insert in the FLIR M24, providing a low profile interface for the mount adapter. The adapter arm provides interpupillary adjustment, while the vertical, fore/aft, and tilt adjustment is handled by the helmet mount. The FLIR Recon mount can be assembled in either left or right eye configurations.

Prowler Augmentation System

The B-TEMIA / Revision Prowler is a near skin, lower body motorized soldier protection device worn on both legs. It is designed to increase the metabolic energy reserve of soldiers while preventing short and long term musculoskeletal injuries. The Prowler distributes the load across the entire body from the upper body to the lower legs, circumventing the load around the knee joint which is proven to reduce applied stress to the knee by 1/3 under combat load conditions. The Prowler has been tested through the US Army NSRDEC Human Augmentation Program and SOCOM’s TALOS Program.

SOFIC 2014 – Polaris Industries

Wednesday, May 21st, 2014

This was a real shocker. Polaris Industries recently started working with a composites company named M9 Defense. Aside from vehicle armor, they also came up with a new helmet in response to a USSOCOM Broad Agency Announcement.

No Wonder They Lost – A Revisit

Wednesday, April 30th, 2014

We recently posted photos from our trip to the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, and in the comments section, one of our readers asked what the deal with the “…Darth Vader looking Republican Guard helmet” was. Way back in 2009, we ran a brief article on the helmet, which was worn by Sadaam’s “elite” Fedayeen forces. Since it has been asked, it’s now perfect time for a revisit.

Some of you may remember the Darth Vaderesque helmet worn by troops in Sadaam’s “elite” Fedayeen forces. Apparently manufactured from fiber glass it saw only limited issue. Perhaps the idea behind the helmet was to make the enemy pause to say, “WTF?” giving the wearer enough time to run away. A badge with the words “The Lord, The Homeland, The Leader” was affixed to the side of the helmet. They bring top dollar in the collector’s market.

A Spanish collector’s site has an excellent backgrounder on the helmet. Check it out here.

Warrior Expo – Adams Industries/Norotos Inc RHNO II Helmet Mount

Tuesday, April 29th, 2014

Adams Industries shared their booth with the guys from Norotos, makers of night vision mounting systems. Based in Southern California, I enjoying seeing them each year at Warrior West. They’re both great companies with great products. You’ve probably seen one of Norotos’ shrouds such as the Universal Shroud. Last year, they won part of the Army helmet mount contract with the RHNO II seen here. Yes, it is being delivered in this Grey metal color.

The single most important thing about this mount is that the patented “Glide-right” mechanism is infinitely adjustable within the limits of its range in both the vertical and horizontal planes. No more notches. You can get the device exactly where you want it.

Above you can see the Dovetail Mounting System in a Universal Shroud. It is available in both Horn (J arm) and Dovetail versions.

Wilcox – L4 Series Hybrid Shroud

Thursday, April 10th, 2014

DSC03747

Wilcox’s L4 Series Hybrid Shroud was developed to allow the user to attach any of Wilcox’s L4 Series line of MVG mounts onto a helmet with either the One-Hole U.S. Army standard or Three-Hole MARSOC/WARCOM mount patterns. In the case of One-Hole helmets, the additional gaps in the housing can be filled with rubber plugs which keep the shroud from collecting dirt and debris. A rubber insert sandwiched between the helmet and shroud stabilizes the shroud body, particularly in cases when the One-Hole mount is utilized. Constructed of lightweight aerospace aluminum alloy and glass-reinforced polymer, the shroud is low profile and durable, yet weighs in at only 1.6 oz.

The Hybrid Shroud features four recesses molded into the sides of the polymer frame, hook points for bungees such as those found on the Ops Core FAST helmets and the Crye Precision AirFrame. The two lower recesses are molded to accept cable/cord pass through. The Hybrid Shroud also accommodates the optional retractable NVG lanyard system.

Available in Black and Tan.
