SIG SAUER Statement on CANSOFCOM Incident

Yesterday, a Canadian news outlet, CBC News, published a story regarding the unintended discharge last year of a SIG P320 by a Canadian Special Operator, resulting in injury and his unit withdrawing the pistol from service. After the accident the unit returned to using the SIG P226 they had planned to replace with the P320.

Unfortunately, the story is not well researched. For example, they edited it after publication, removing an inaccurate description of how the pistol operates. Rather than critique it all here, we leave it up to you to read it.

However, we will point out that the story alleges that the pistols in question do not feature the drop safety upgrades found in the US Military Modular Handgun System M17/18 and current production P320s. Considering they were procured from SIG after the changes were made to the design, this is false and severely undermines the narrative offered up in the article.

While the story was shared in various corners of the web and social media, it didn’t gain near the traction that we had expected. Reactions ranged from confirmation bias from those who don’t like 320s and just read the headline and not the full story; to others who brushed the issue off as a Negligent Discharge; to those who questioned the timing of the story as a hit piece placed by SIG’s competitors.

The last factor is worth examining, considering that the Canadian Department of National Defence is poised to release a tender for a replacement for their long-serving Browning Hi-powers, a firearm which should have been replaced years ago.

In a similar fashion to US “Buy America” directives, the Canadian government requires “Canadian Content.” For small arms, this means Colt Canada, a company which doesn’t manufacture modern, polymer, striker fired pistols.

In 2011, DND tested the waters, surveying industry’s willingness to sell their pistol Technical Data Packages to the Canadian government so that Colt Canada could be involved in the procurement. As you can imagine, the notion fell flat. Almost a decade has gone by and they’ve finally refined their requirement, deciding to open it to international contenders. Word is, they also homed in on a modular design inspired by MHS, with different frame and barrel sizes along with a common trigger mechanism. If true, this gives SIG a serious leg up on the competition.

But back to the firearm. Apparently, the pistol and holster made it to SIG where they attempted to replicate the malfunction. They couldn’t. What they did find odd was that the P320 was paired with a P226 holster which had modified, possibly with a Dremel tool, and heated and reformed. The fit is reportedly, far from optimal.

Naturally, the Canadian government is reticent to address the entire issue, considering the sensitivity of the unit in question. Since it made the papers and a point was made in the story to politicize the weapons purchase (it is categorized under politics for good measure), the Minister of Defence was assuredly briefed.

Absent an official statement from DND, we can only imagine how this affair might affect the upcoming pistol tender. Only time will tell.

However, we do have SIG SAUER’s statement on the matter:

NEWINGTON, N.H., (February 5, 2021) – SIG SAUER is working with Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) to resolve an incident involving the unintended discharge of a P320. An inaccurate and incomplete report of this incident was recently published in the Canadian media that called into question the safety of the P320. While this incident occurred months ago, this erroneous media report is driven by multiple sources, including our competitors, and coincides with the imminent release of other Canadian military and law enforcement tenders, indicating the timing of its release is an attempt to improperly influence the procurements.

The firearm involved has been extensively tested by SIG SAUER and it has been determined to be safe. The investigation revealed the use of an incorrect holster not designed for a P320. The use of a modified P226 holster created an unsafe condition by allowing a foreign object to enter the holster, causing the unintended discharge.

The SIG SAUER P320 is among the most rigorously vetted pistols in the market. The P320 meets and exceeds all US safety standards and global military and law enforcement protocols, including the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), National Institute of Justice (NIJ), and Department of Justice (DOJ). The P320 is one of the most innovative and sought-after pistols in the firearms market, and the pistol of choice for all branches of the United States Military (M17/M18), along with numerous law enforcement agencies and other military units worldwide.

What caused the malfunction? That’s still up in the air, but the actual pistol doesn’t seem to be the culprit. That leaves poor holster choice or operator error. Regardless, the article served its purpose, to disrupt pistol procurements. If not for DND, at least for LE Agencies in Canada.

Our approach to the production and development of sleeping bags is built on historical principles of layering and the synergy this provides due to an increased heat to weight ratio. Halite Two-Bag System

In close collaboration with our factories and end users we at Halite have created a two-bag system that we know solves many of the current day issues with sleeping bags:

• Our Overbag Pro goes over the inner bag of your choice, which moves the dew point away from your sleeping bag and into the highly hydrophobic Climashield® APEX insulation which results in a drier sleeping bag over time.

Our Overbag Pro goes over the inner bag of your choice (our choice obviously falls on one our Recce bags in either down or syntethic), and is made of the synthetic material Climashield® APEX with Aquaban® technology. The two-bag system system designed to make life a little easier – we’ve added a dual-zip function on the Overbag: two long zippers, one on each side, allow you to ventilate the top part of the bag and at the same time increase the insulation in the foot piece with the open flap. This huge opening and size of the bag makes it possible to wear all your gear on entry. Another perk to our Overbag Pro is its width: you’ll even be able to fit a sleeping mat inside the bag.

For the thick extra wide insulating inner-bag we have two materiality alternatives; either down or synthetics. To protect the down from outside moisture, the down bag is made of a Gore Infinium outer fabric. The synthetic fabric is created with Climashield® APEX with Aquaban® technology. Our system has a close to zero dew point. Due to the extremely breathable and hydrophobic material, moisture will be transported and squeezed out from the inner bag to the Overbag. A great win for anyone who’ve dealt with a sticky wet inner-bag due to a too high dew point in the past.

Material Mash-up

What happens with seams and textiles in varying climates; humid, cold and dry weather etc.? A recurring problem for users is moisture transport, drying clothes and/or sleeping bags. There are plenty of good solutions to this problem, however the most important factors are good training and right materiality. The arrangement of materials and design is decisive for how good and durable the bag is.

The insulation materials that are available on the market today have varying degrees of insulation, weight distribution systems and hydroponic properties. The best-known insulation materials today are synthetic, down and wool. We’ve concentrated our efforts on the two former materials when choosing the right materials and developing our sleeping bags.

Down

Down gets a 10/10 score on warmth to weight ratio, is the best insulation material, and it provides the best volume when packing as opposed to synthetics and wool. Down insulates by trapping air and is prized for being light, easy to compress, long-lasting and breathable. As opposed to what many people believe, down is the plumage that’s found underneath the exterior feathers on a goose and consists of soft, fluffy, wispy filaments. A downside to down as a fill material is that if it’s exposed to excessive moisture or water over a longer period of time, it doesn’t deal with moisture well. When down gets wet it clumps and collapses as the filaments will stick to each other. This makes the drying process very time consuming and difficult compared to synthetic fill.

It’s worth mentioning that from natures side down clusters are naturally water repellant – if the down is treated properly during processing, washing etc. it will withstand moisture in the long run.

Synthetics

The synthetics provide good insulation up to a certain thickness before the materials themselves become a limitation; The weight compresses the air and makes the bags colder, and volume gets disproportionately high when packing. Synthetic fill is quick-drying and insulates even if wet, better than down, and provides an acceptable warmth to weight ratio. Another upside to using synthetics as insulation is that it’s less expensive than down insulation, and is durable and hypoallergenic. While out on missions and while being exposed to the elements, synthetics are far easier to care for an maintain than down.

Choosing the bag that’s right for your mission

When you’re searching for your next new sleeping bag, taking your mission into account, one of the most important decisions you’ll have to make is between down and synthetic insulation. Moisture transport

Dew point – a key word when talking and thinking about sleeping bags. The dew point determines whether the moisture from a person is taken up by the material, or if it is transported away to become vapor, water or ice. This is a known phenomenon and can be observed in the form of condensation on the outer fabric of a bag, or worst case – inside the bag itself. Added challenges with condensation may also come from one’s own surroundings; tents etc.

What our Overbag Pro primarily does, when temperatures are really low, is ensure that the zero-point isn’t inside the primary bag. If the zero-point is inside the primary bag, vapor and heat from our bodies will condensate – and in freezing temperatures, this condensation will in turn transform into ice particles. By moving the zero-point, either to a place between two bags or to an overbag, it’s possible to ensure that one’s primary bag stays warm and dry. If the zero-point is between two bags you’ll be able to freeze dry the outer fabric. Which is why we use Gore Windstopper on our down bags, as it’s water repellent. Also worth mentioning – it’s a lot easier to dry an overbag than one’s primary bag as the fill in our Overbag Pro is extremely hydrophobic.

Jankel Achieves Final Design Review (FDR) Milestone with Pickup Variant of Their Armoured Toyota LC200

Jankel, a world-leader in the design and manufacture of high-specification defence, security and NGO protection systems, has achieved an important Final Design Review (FDR) milestone with a twin-cab pickup variant of their Hot Formed Armoured Toyota LC200. The vehicle has been designed for an undisclosed customer. With the Toyota LC200 due to go out of production in 2021, Jankel are highlighting this conversion as an example of how they can adapt any vehicle to meet customer needs and fill specific capability gaps in the specialist protected vehicle market. With that in mind, the pickup design has the potential to become an after-market modification carried out on in-service LC200’s.

Partnering with Australian Expedition Vehicles (AEV), Jankel has integrated AEV’s existing and proven pickup design with the also proven and certified, Jankel armoured LC200 base platform. Bringing together the strengths of both designs into one offering has resulted in the armoured variant maintaining its protection level whilst gaining from an additional 650mm in wheelbase. This combined with a heavy duty rear axle upgrade delivers a significant increase in Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM-5800kg) and payload (up to 1500kg depending on specification), whilst retaining the existing protected crew-cab dimensions and space. The technique of lengthening the chassis and incorporating the modular and adaptable flatbed pickup pod is easily adapted to other commonly armoured light vehicles.

In addition to the increased payload and the usable flat 1900mm x 1700mm load bed space, the vehicle can be configured to deliver a number of automotive and user-orientated tactical capability enhancements such as: run-flats; improved brakes; tuned suspension; fire suppression system; door deadbolts; escape hatch; gun ports; weapons mounts; tactical lighting and a PA/siren. The lightweight flat-bed can be delivered with a canopy or a hard-top and includes folding/removable sides and integrated modular storage bins. Following FDR, Jankel will be undertaking validation tests to include elements of PAS 301 and expects the new vehicle to be in production by July 2021.

Rheinmetall and MBDA Win Contract for High-Energy Laser System

Schrobenhausen / Düsseldorf – Germany’s Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has awarded a consortium, or ARGE, consisting of MBDA Deutschland GmbH and Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH a contract to fabricate, integrate and support testing of a laser weapon demonstrator in the maritime environment. The order value is in the low double-digit million euro range.
Work will be shared out on a roughly equal basis. MBDA Deutschland is responsible for tracking, the operator’s console and linking the laser weapon demonstrator to the command-and-control system. Rheinmetall is in charge of the laser weapon station, the beam guiding system, cooling, and integration of the laser weapon system into the project container of the laser source demonstrator.
The laser weapon demonstrator is to be fabricated, tested and integrated by the end of the 2021. Trials onboard the German Navy frigate F-124 Sachsen are to take place in 2022.
As Doris Laarmann, head of laser business development at MBDA Deutschland, notes, “The contract is an important step on the path to an operational high-energy laser system. Our two companies will apply their respective strengths to make this project a success on behalf of the German Navy. Once it’s installed, the demonstrator will also be used to test important aspects such as the interaction and function of the sensor suite, combat management system and effector as well as rules of engagement.”  
Alexander Graf, head of Rheinmetall Waffe Munition’s laser weapons programme, and Dr Markus Jung, who leads the company’s laser weapon development effort, both agree, adding that “The contract marks a systematic extension of the functional prototype laser weapon successfully tested in recent years, with the experience gained now dovetailing into one of the most ambitious projects in the field of laser weapon development in Europe.”
A breakthrough development in the history of defence technology, lasers engage targets at the speed of light, operating with great precision and producing very little collateral damage. A demonstrator system featuring these capabilities will soon be put to the test under highly realistic operating conditions onboard a German frigate.

INVISIO’s Acquisition of Racal Acoustics Completed, Management Group Expanded

INVISIO’s acquisition of Racal Acoustics is now completed. This strengthens INVISIO’s position as global market leader in advanced systems for communication and hearing protection for professional users.

The acquisition of Racal Acoustics, which was announced on 22 December 2020, means that INVISIO is broadening its offer with a complementary product category consisting of advanced and robust hearing protection and communications headsets for environments with constant high noise. This type of environment is found for example in large military vehicles and around aircraft.

The acquisition creates several attractive growth opportunities, both through combining Racal Acoustics’ market leading offer with INVISIO’s global sales organization and through giving INVISIO access to customers relevant to the Intercom system.

Racal Acoustics has recently completed a successful restructuring and in 2021 is expected to make a considerable contribution to INVISIO’s continued growth journey, as well as having a positive impact on profits. No material integration costs are expected.

James has many years’ international experience from the defense and aviation industries as well as the electronics sector. He has held several executive positions in Esterline Advanced Sensors, within engineering, program management, IT and business development. James reports to INVISIO’s President and CEO.
