USAF Pararescue Seeks Extended Maritime Mobility Vessel

Wednesday, July 5th, 2023

The Special Warfare Contracting Office at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for a new capability called the Extended Maritime Mobility Platform, essentially an airdroppable rigid hulled inflatable boat.

Currently, the force relies on small inflatables boats with small outboard motors and 2-man Advanced Rescue Crafts which are wave runner-style craft used to provide close access to those who need rescuing in the open ocean. These systems, like the anticipated EMMP are airdropped from HC130 aircraft.

The boat will be used by the Air Force’s Pararescue which is organized as the Guardian Angel community consisting of the action arm made up of enlisted Pararescuemen and commissioned Combat Rescue Officers along with enlisted Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape specialists who provide training and unit support.

According to the RFI, “Guardian Angel (GA) surface maritime operations include search/support/recovery of Isolated Personnel (IP) and recovery of Sensitive Items from ocean and coastal environments across permissive, semi-permissive, and contested threat environments.

Fielding an air-droppable, survivable, open-ocean capable, hard-hulled watercraft will provide the United States Air Force (USAF) with long range maritime Personnel Recovery adequate for vast, extended duration, open- ocean operations.”

The RFI closes on 10 July but hopefully the team issuing the RFI attended last week’s Multi-Agency Craft conference in Portsmouth, Virginia to see the gathering of small boat manufacturers.

Monday, June 26th, 2023

MATBOCK showed off their Raider OTB Kits during Warrior East. Included in the line are Front, Back, and Side Pouches as well as Rifle Bag. Seam sealed and incorporating waterproof zippers, the Raider line is meant for over the beach ops and has thee maritime applications.

Raider Front Pouch

This is a waterproof low profile pouch that mounts directly to the front of your plate carrier keeping water and sand out of your magazines and gear. It can quickly be unzipped allowing the operator full access to magazines and gear and ready to move out in a fraction of the time it would take in the past.

Raider Back Pouch

The Back Pouch is a low profile waterproof backpack that mounts directly to the back of your plate carrier with MOLLE attachment point, or to the GRAM insert and worn as a stand-alone removable pack as seen here.

Raider Side Pouch

The Side Pouch is a 6″x6″ lightweight waterproof GP pouch intended to attach via PALS to the cummerbund. It incorporates a waterproof zipper and like the entire Raider line, sealed seams.

Raider Rifle Bag

Warrior East 23 – Mustang Survival x HSI

Monday, June 26th, 2023

Another technology exhibited during the ADS Maritime Demo Day is the TacHeat System developed by Human Systems Integration and integrated into dry suits by Mustang Survival. The technology stems from a SBIR program for heated gloves and relies on electrically heated coils which are embedded in the fabric.

Currently, there is a next to skin top and bottom, glove liner and insole.

Here you can see how the power cable interfaces with the next-to-skin layer.

This cable is used to pass the power cable through the drysuit.

There are currently two control boxes, with ine having a smaller form factor but less control.

The wearer can choose which components he wants to use. For example, all of the components, or just gloves and insoles for say aircraft door gunners.

Warrior East 23 – SEA DOO Watercraft

Monday, June 26th, 2023

On Friday, the day after Warrior East, ADS hosted a maritime Demo Day which showcased several technologies including this SEA DOO 170 Explorer Pro personal watercraft.

The SEA DOO 170 Explorer Pro is new this year from Bombardier Recreational Products and offers space for up to three and comes equipped with a rear deck which is great for rescues. ADS works with Alpha Logistics Group to add customization like this RP Advanced Mobile Systems inflatable bumper to allow the operator to get right next to decks and other watercraft.

I didn’t even realize ADS offered watercraft aside from Combat Rubber Raiding Craft and outboard engines. Apparently, they’re offered through the MRO (Maintenace, Repair, and Operations) team and generally executed through the FES (Fire and Emergency Serrvices) TLS (Tailored Logistic Support) contract.

SeaGuardian Used by USN in Support of Integrated Battle Problem

Sunday, May 21st, 2023

AN DIEGO – 18 May 2023 – In support of the U.S. Navy’s (USN) Integrated Battle Problem 2023 (IBP-23) exercise in May, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) conducted a series of Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) exercises cooperatively with the USN Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadrons (HSM) 38, 49, 71, and 75. GA-ASI flew a company-owned MQ-9B SeaGuardian® Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) under a USN Flight Clearance. The HSM squadrons flew the MH-60R Seahawk helicopter flown out of Naval Air Station North Island off the coast of San Diego, Calif., on April 24-25, 2023.

The exercise was focused on Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) to conduct Cooperative ASW in the Southern California Offshore ASW range. During the two-day event, MH-60s dropped sonobuoys to detect a mobile training target. Using the combined SeaGuardian and MH-60R teaming concept, correlation and location of the target was expeditiously achieved and tactical reports – known as TACREPs – were then transmitted to Commander, Task Force (CTF) 34 Theater ASW Center at Naval Station Pearl Harbor via the MQ-9B crew. The CTF then directed a coordinated constructive “kill” of the simulated submarine with notional torpedoes dropped from the MH-60s. The ASW payload on the SeaGuardian uses the latest version of General Dynamics Mission Systems’ Sonobuoy Processor.

“These advanced tactics, techniques, and procedures utilizing MUM-T further reinforce the advantages to unmanned aircraft in combat with less risk to force,” said GA-ASI Vice President of DoD Strategic Development Patrick Shortsleeve.

The IBP-23 exercise is the third time GA-ASI’s MQ-9B SeaGuardian has supported this annual event. These exercises generate warfighting advantages for the Fleet by providing the operational environment to work through tactics, techniques, procedures, and command and control to refine and enhance warfighting. The Fleet IBP series is led by Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet and executed by Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet and will continue throughout May 2023.
