War Sport Thermal Rail Cover

Monday, November 28th, 2011

At the request of military personnel, War Sport Inc. has put together a rail cover for cold weather operations. Its purpose is simple, to keep the cold from transferring from a weapon into the fingers and wrist, especially from aluminum rails, which don’t shed cold well. WSI’s specialty is actually thermal cloaking (such as with their Barrel Sock, also originally built at the request of a specific organization, and the Suppressor Sock). They used their thermal material and expertise to make such a rail cover work a little better, basically inverting it so the thermal cloth is pointed upward, guarded by a rugged but lightweight 330 Cordura wrap. It reflects heat back into the hand, though not enough to create much of a signature and does reduce the visibility of rail temperature.

The rail cover is not specifically designed to mitigate the weapon’s thermal signature, though it will do so by virtue of its construction. Initial evaluations showed it reduces measured rail temperature by approximately 20 degrees. Obviously, it can be used in conjunction with the Suppressor and Barrel Socks to reduce overall signature.

The rail cover is available with and without MOLLE points, and in the latter case will be available in vertical strips, lateral strips or a mix of the two. (The MOLLE points were added as an option for those who might want to run brush or natural camo through them, or perhaps to throw a small pouch on there if they’re going to be lying prone for a long period of time. It’s obviously not to hang modular pouches off of while you’re busting brush, or running CQB/MOUT operations—don’t read more into it than there is.)

They’ll have it in ATACS UA, the new ATACS FG, Woodland, Coyote, Black, etc. The most likely market for these will be cold weather shooters, hunters and similar commercial applications, though LEOs and military personnel may like it as well.

The thermal rail cover with MOLLE weighs in at 3.9 oz., the one without MOLLE just under 3. Contact War Sport on their website or on Facebook for more information.

MOLLE Muff from FHF Gear

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

It’s getting cold out there. Whether stalking game or humans, there can be periods of time where you are sitting, and your hands freeze up. If you’re like me (and designer Paul Lewis), you don’t like to wear thick gloves. But, the MOLLE Muff from FHF Gear keeps your hands warm and at the ready.

It features a Cordura outer and a fleece inner with a mesh pocket for handwarmers. It attaches to your vest (or belt) via a single row of PALS webbing. Paul intends for you to mount the MOLLE Muff low, out of the way of your kit but you still have the option of mounting up on the chest. Additionally, there is some elastic in the attachment that allows for some give.

Coyote Brown and MultiCam are now in stock and ready to ship for winter. Ranger Green and Black should be in stock around Christmas. Other colors will be custom orders.

CTOMS MOLLE Drop Extension Panel

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

The MOLLE Drop Extension Panel works with the CTOMS X-Belt/M-Harness System. It’s four PALS columns wide and velcroes into place inside the belt’s pad. While there is plenty of Velcro there to keep it fast, spanning gear across from the belt to the panel locks it completely into place.

As you can see, it’s designed to keep your belt up where it needs to be around your waist, but allows you to put your gear down lower, where you want it. This isn’t a full drop leg panel but rather an extension directly from your belt. To put it in perspective, the Drop Extension Panel lowers the top of a 30 round magazine to the level of the top of the belt.

It’s a cool idea and what makes it even better is that CTOMS is in production of a Duty Belt version, compatible with 2″ standard duty style belts in both 2 and 4 column wide versions.

BAE Systems Celebrates the 15 Millionth MOLLE Component

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

Yesterday, tt a ceremony in their factory in McKee, Kentucky, BAE Systems celebrated the production of their 15 Millionth MOLLE component. In fact, about 10 million of those components originated at that very facility. It’s hard to believe but MOLLE itself is almost 15 years old. Developed in 1997 in conjunction with the US Army’s Natick Soldier Systems Center, MOdular Lightweight Load carrying Equipment or MOLLE is a system of individual load carrying components used primarily by the US Army. The heart of the system is the Pouch Attachment Ladder System (PALS) standard that allows the equipment to be tailored to the mission by configuring various vests, packs and armor carriers or “platforms”, as they are known, with specialized pockets and pouches to carry equipment. The beauty of MOLLE is that it is spirally developed. As new technologies and weapons are fielded, MOLLE can adapt by adding or dropping pouches and platforms. Not only has this happened several times over the life of the program but it has been fielded in no-less-than four camouflage patterns: Woodland, 3-Color Desert, UCP, and OCP. Associated systems such as the USMC’s ILBE, USAF DF-LCS, and SOCOM’s SOF-LCS as well as individual components have been produced in even more styles and colorways, but have all relied on PALS.

The original MOLLE Core Rifleman set incorporated a rucksack, load bearing vest, and pouches and included the so-called “probe and socket,” a quick-release between the pack frame and waist belt that might have been a little ahead of its time. The currently issued system includes a one-size-fits-all load bearing vest, Pack with and a fixed waist belt and a Tactical Assault Panel (TAP).

On hand at the event was Don Dutton, Vice President of BAE Systems’ Protection Systems. He related, “The MOLLE system provides users with a completely customizable set of equipment which allows for readiness, mobility and efficiency of the warfighter, reaching a milestone such as the production of 15 million components, is an exceptional achievement for BAE Systems and its employees to achieve. Our employees come to work each day knowing that the work they do, is helping our warfighters overseas.”

Also attending the celebration were Representative Marie Rader (R-Kentucky), U.S. Congressman, Harold Rogers (R-Kentucky), Major General Ed Tonini, The Adjutant General for the Kentucky National Guard and Sergeant Major Charles Williams of PM Soldier Protection & Individual Equipment.

“Job well done to the fine BAE Systems employees hard at work in Jackson County. This is a remarkable achievement,” said Congressman Hal Rogers. “Not only are these McKee sewing technicians making our region proud through exceptional craftsmanship, but they’re helping our warfighters stay well equipped and battle-ready with light-weight, adjustable gear. This work not only creates good paying jobs in southern and eastern Kentucky, but builds the security of our nation.”

H2O Gear

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

All rumors aside, former Eagle Industries owner John Carver has some really cool stuff going on. Almost two years ago now, he teamed up with renowned Ski Guide Dean Cummings to create H2O Gear (H2OG). It was formed to develop, design, and test equipment for the most extreme conditions. Between John’s leadership at Eagle and Dean’s on the slopes, it sounds like a match made in heaven.

Their H2O Gear ATG (access the goods) ski line is handmade in the USA. Their custom designs include details from Dean’s years of experience, identifying light lumber to construct the skis. Their tapered sidewalls are heat fused to wood cores to protect the skis from edge damage while also keeping the ski durable, damp, and impact resistant. Additionally, their skis are fully protected by oversized, 4001 thick edges that wrap 360 degrees around the ski.

While all of the skis in the photo below sport some cool paint jobs, they also produce an all white ski designed specifically for military applications. This super damped “hybrid ski” is made from Ash and Aspen and features a reverse side cut which may seem counter intuitive to most but makes it easier to feather. This military model is a shorter ski and designed to traverse junk, or icy snow. It’s truly a working ski.

If you are going to be at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake City this week, be sure to stop by and check them out in booth # PV365. Make sure to say “hi” to John and Dean.
