Beyond the Base Vehicle: How Polaris is Building a Mission-Ready MRZR D Ecosystem for NATO

Friday, August 14th, 2026

Five configurable mission kits transform the diesel-powered MRZR D from a capable light tactical vehicle into a fully tailored operational platform – covering everything from encrypted radio integration to road-legal compliance.

Polaris Government & Defense  |  NSPA Programme

When NATO’s Support and Procurement Agency set out to equip member nations with a next-generation light tactical vehicle, the requirement was never simply for a machine that could traverse difficult terrain. It was for a system – one that could be configured, transported, communicated through and deployed in the full range of conditions that modern operations demand. Polaris Government & Defense’s answer is the MRZR D, and sitting behind the base vehicle is a suite of five mission kits designed to meet that challenge head-on.

Each kit addresses a distinct operational need, and together they represent a considered approach to the complexity of modern light force mobility. Here is a closer look at what each one brings to the fight.

MISSION KIT 1

Communications and Navigation Capability

Situational awareness begins with knowing where you are and being able to talk to your team. Mission Kit 1 addresses both. A Garmin TREAD system, mounted directly to the vehicle’s roll-over protection structure, provides GPS navigation with European mapping – a straightforward but operationally critical capability for forces operating across NATO’s diverse geography.

The communications element goes further. Polaris has developed a custom Walk-On-Fit solution for 117 and 152 type radios – the workhorses of NATO tactical communications. Rather than integrating radios permanently into the vehicle, the system uses a vehicle-powered tray that feeds a portable backpack assembly. Inside, a dedicated power supply charges and runs both handheld and manpack radios. The result is a dismount-ready solution: the kit powers up on the vehicle and walks off with the operator when they leave it.

Above is the custom Walk-On-Fit solution for 117 and 152 type radios – powering the kit on the vehicle, and walking off with the operator when they leave it.

MISSION KIT 2

Protection and Safety

Three components make up this kit, each targeting a different aspect of vehicle and load protection. A tailored storage cover – available in variants for both the two – and four-seat MRZR D configurations – shields the vehicle when not in use, whether that is at a forward operating base or in transit.

Inside the vehicle, a cargo area protection net prevents unsecured loads from becoming projectiles in dynamic terrain, while a load bed separator net divides the cargo space – allowing personnel and equipment to coexist safely in the rear of the vehicle. Simple in concept, but the kind of detail that matters when the ground gets rough.

MISSION KIT 3

Transportation Trailer

Getting the MRZR D to the point of need often means moving it by road, towed behind a civilian or light military vehicle. Mission Kit 3 provides a purpose-built transportation trailer for exactly that task. Manufactured by a Polaris partner within the European Union, the trailer features a 4.0 by 2.0 metre bed, a 2,600 kilogram gross capacity, twin axles and a standard ball-mount coupling for broad compatibility with towing vehicles.

Supplied with loading ramps and a spare wheel, the trailer is a complete road-movement solution. A storage cover for the MRZR D is included, protecting the vehicle from the elements during transit. Delivery to UK or EU locations is included in the standard price.

MISSION KIT 4

Cargo Trailer

Where Mission Kit 3 moves the vehicle, Mission Kit 4 moves what comes with it. The MRZR D cargo trailer is built by a longstanding Polaris partner in Portugal, and its design reflects a deliberate logistical philosophy: wherever possible, it shares components with the base vehicle. Wheels, tires, brake assemblies and wheel hubs are common across both platforms, significantly reducing the spares burden for units operating in the field.

The standard kit is comprehensively equipped. A vehicle storage cover, a tarpaulin load cover, a Hi-Lift jack, a spare wheel assembly with holder and brace and two mounting positions for additional spare wheel or fuel and water can holders are all included as standard. Trailer electrics are compatible with the NATO 12-pin connector on the base vehicle, ensuring a clean and reliable electrical interface. It is the kind of integration that saves time in the field and reduces the friction of sustained operations.

Wherever possible, the cargo trailer shares components with the base vehicle – wheels, tires, brakes and hubs – significantly reducing the spares burden in the field.

MISSION KIT 5

Accessories for Roadworthiness

Perhaps the most nuanced of the five kits, Mission Kit 5 exists because the MRZR D is not a homologated vehicle off the shelf. For nations that require their vehicles to meet European road lighting regulations – whether for movement to the theatre, cross-border transit or domestic road use – navigating the national type-approval process is a genuine operational and administrative challenge.

Polaris has addressed this directly by offering a kit of parts that improves compliance with European lighting standards. The package includes a full road lighting suite – headlamps, turn signals, brake lamps, tail lamps and provision for license plate illumination – alongside a horn and vehicle side mirrors mounted on highly adjustable RAM mounts. The mirrors inparticular reflect careful thinking: rigid military vehicles often struggle to meet mirror positioning requirements across different regulatory regimes, and the flexibility of a RAM mount system provides the adaptability that fixed solutions cannot.

Together, the five kits represent something more than a menu of accessories. They are evidence of Polaris Government & Defense’s understanding that a vehicle program is only as successful as its ability to serve the full operational lifecycle –from the moment it arrives in country to the last mile of its service life.

Belgium Places First Order of Polaris MRZR D Tactical Off-Road Vehicles Through NATO Contract

Tuesday, July 14th, 2026

MINNEAPOLIS – July 13, 2026Polaris Government and Defense, a division of Polaris Inc. (NYSE: PII), has secured an order for MRZR D4 vehicles from the Belgium Ministry of Defence, leveraging the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) framework contract. The contract is valued at $10.6 million and is the first call order from the NSPA framework contract, which was first awarded to Polaris in September 2025. This procurement approach fulfills competition requirements, streamlines the acquisition process and eliminates the need for additional, time-consuming and costly trials and competitions. In addition to bulk pricing benefits and expedited acquisition, NSPA enables interoperability, standardization and a reduced logistics footprint across NATO members and partners.

“The Belgium Ministry of Defence helped establish the MRZR D on the framework contract, with additional partner countries including the United Kingdom,” said Steve Canner, senior manager, EMEIA, Polaris Government and Defense. “The vehicle’s capabilities and commonality with other NATO nations will serve Belgium forces very well and we’re proud to support them.”

The Belgium MoD managed the acquisition of Polaris ATVs through the NATO Logistics Stock Exchange (NLSE) platform, considered as a secured, web-based marketplace application allowing the users to directly explore and order the purchase of systems and mission related configurable items. The NLSE platform provides NATO National Ministries of Defence access to validated and quality assured products easily, including cargo and transportation kits, parts and service kits and maintenance and operator training courses.

“With these new vehicles, we are significantly increasing our mobility and operational capabilities,” said Colonel Kristof Van Poecke, Commander, Belgium Special Operations Regiment. “They enable our operators to respond more quickly and flexibly in challenging conditions, where speed and manoeuvrability make the difference. This is an important step to maintain our operational capacity at the highest level.”

Belgium joins more than 50 other military and security forces worldwide who field MRZR D tactical off-road vehicles from Polaris to support expeditionary, rapid response and special operations missions. The MRZR D’s modular payload design, diesel powertrain, air and sea transportability make it a trusted platform for tactical mobility in complex terrain and contested zones. The acquisition of the MRZR D4 will support the replacement of Belgium’s aging Groundhog vehicle fleet which have been in service since 2009.

Polaris first introduced the MRZR platform in 2012 and has continued to enhance the vehicle to meet the mission demands of the U.S. military, delivering gas and diesel variants to more than 50 allied forces worldwide. MRZRs feature a mission-flexible modular design, collapsible roll cage for internal tactical air transport, one meter fording capability, greater payload and extended range over commercial platforms. The MRZR D is combat-proven and transportable inside AW101 Merlin, CH-47 Chinook, V-22 Osprey and most in-service fixed wing aircraft, as well as maritime vessels, enabling rapid deployment and dispersal of forces from aircraft or ship-to-shore platforms into theater. It is a highly configurable platform that supports personnel transport, casualty evacuation, command and control and light cargo roles — all with a focus on speed, versatility and off-road capability.

Since their introduction, MRZRs have been outfitted with counter unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS), weapons and high-energy laser systems, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) systems, expeditionary command and control systems, autonomy packages, litters for medical and casualty evacuation, aircraft refueling systems and communication equipment.

The MRZR D is part of Polaris Government and Defense’s broader portfolio of off-road mobility solutions that include the MRZR Alpha, MV 850, DAGOR and militarized snowmobiles.

Thursday, March 5th, 2026

Galvion, a world leader in innovative head protection systems and power and data management solutions, has received a new order from the Department of National Defence (DND) Canada for its flagship Batlskin Caiman® ballistic helmet systems. This latest order for an additional 29,000 helmets with two (2) helmet covers each, has been placed through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) framework contract.

Galvion was awarded the Canadian Dismounted Infantry Capability Enhancement (DICE) programme contract in February 2023 for 2,100 helmets and 4,200 helmet covers. In July 2024, the DND exercised an option to order an additional 8,400 helmets and 16,800 helmet covers taking the total Canadian DICE order to 10,500 helmets and 21,000 covers, all successfully delivered. In July 2025 Galvion announced a third follow-on order, with delivery planned for early 2026. In total, the DICE contract orders total 15,000 helmets and over 30,000 covers. This latest order, for a further 29,000 this time through NPSA and outside of the original DICE programme contract, takes the total Caiman helmet systems ordered by the Canadian DND to over 44,000 helmets and over 100,000 covers.

Developed over a number of years with extensive SOF community collaboration and feedback and now fielded in the hundreds of thousands across multiple NATO countries, Galvion’s Caiman® helmet system delivers unmatched levels of weight and comfort, and is expressly designed to incorporate electronics, communications headsets, and other critical equipment needs, now and into the future. For this most recent NSPA order, Galvion will be supplying the DND with its NATO Caiman® helmet system, which features updated and robust rails, a breakaway harness and the latest improved version of its best-in-class APEX liner system. Ms Danielli, General and Cooperative Services Programme Manager, emphasized: “NSPA is proud to support the Canadian Armed Forces in delivering critical protective equipment to their troops. This procurement demonstrates the strength of our COMMIT partnership in providing nations with reliable and cost-effective solutions. Through the web-based platform of the NATO Logistics Stock Exchange (NLSE), NSPA accelerates procurement by consolidating national requirements and leveraging long-term framework contracts, enabling nations to translate urgent operational needs into timely, mission-relevant capabilities.”

Jonathan Blanshay, Executive Chairman at Galvion said: “We are exceedingly proud to receive yet another significant order from the Canadian DND taking the total to over 44,000 helmets in a four-year period, this time through the NSPA framework contract. Repeat orders like this demonstrate partner confidence and end-user satisfaction, both of which are core drivers for everything that we do at Galvion.” He added: “We continue to see significant increases in demand across all of our head system platforms, with the Caiman helmet seeing far and wide adoption beyond the SOF community, as evidenced by the continued receipt of orders from NATO countries through our NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) framework contract. For the Canadian DND to have adopted the NSPA model makes it very clear that the NSPA procurement route delivers advantages to NATO members on both sides of the Atlantic. Caiman, through NSPA, has now become the global head system of choice.”

Rheinmetall Framework Agreement with NATO Procurement Agency for 120mm Tank Ammunition – Initial Order Worth Around €200 Million

Monday, February 16th, 2026

Rheinmetall is further expanding its role as a leading manufacturer of 120mm tank ammunition. The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has called off its first batch of ammunition, worth around €200 million, under a 2025 framework agreement for 120mm ammunition, a contract of substantial scope and value. The end customers are various NATO countries.

The ‘Basic Contractual Instrument’ (BCI) signed with NSPA in July 2025 defines the terms and conditions as well as all technical specifications for various types of 120mm tank ammunition. NATO and NATO-equivalent members can use the framework agreement to simplify the procurement of Rheinmetall ammunition. They can order the ammunition directly from the NSPA. This significantly simplifies the procurement of 120mm tank ammunition within the Atlantic Alliance. Rheinmetall can thus further expand its role as a leading supplier of 120 mm tank ammunition.

Used in the field by many nations since 1980, Rheinmetall’s 120mm smoothbore technology has become the established main battle tank armament within the armed forces of Germany, NATO and other allied nations worldwide. It is the standard system on the Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams main battle tanks. Due to their superior performance and still available power reserves, Rheinmetall can continue to offer innovative and threat-appropriate technical solutions in the caliber 120mm in the medium term.

Germany joins a growing list of NATO countries that have selected GA-ASI’s advanced MQ-9B RPA for its multi-domain capabilities with exceptionally long range and endurance. The platform provides pole-to-pole satellite control and de-icing capabilities to enable missions in cold climates. SeaGuardian features two multi-mode surface-search radars that deliver wide-area maritime surveillance, with an option to add Anti-Submarine Warfare capability. Additionally, MQ-9B’s in-house-developed Detect and Avoid System aids its ability to fly in unsegregated airspace for domestic civilian operations, making it highly versatile for operations from Germany.

In 2025, MQ-9B became the first large RPA to obtain a Military Type Certificate from the UK’s Military Aviation Authority, certifying its safe operation without geographic restrictions, including over populous areas.

“We’re thrilled that Germany has joined the list of NATO countries that have selected MQ-9B SeaGuardian,” said GA-ASI CEO Linden Blue. “The proliferation of MQ-9B in Europe delivers commonality between NATO countries and for Germany, it will provide opportunities for interoperability with their fleet of P-8As.”

The acquisition negotiation was executed on behalf of Germany by NSPA, which has developed a contractual framework through the MQ-9 Support Partnership (MIC SP) for supporting cooperation amongst its member nations and enabling the procurement of MQ-9B for NATO Allies and Partners. NSPA has added MQ-9B to its portfolio of defense systems to contract on behalf of NATO nations, with the goal of enhancing interoperability for joint training and operations.

“This Support Partnership demonstrates how NSPA enables efficient, effective and responsive multinational acquisitions for advanced, interoperable capabilities. We are proud to support Germany in this strategic investment for maritime surveillance and security,” said Ms. Stacy A. Cummings, NSPA General Manager.

MQ-9B includes the SkyGuardian® and SeaGuardian® models as well as the Protector RG Mk1 that is currently being delivered to the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force (RAF). GA-ASI also has MQ-9B procurement contracts with Belgium, Canada, Denmark, India, Japan, Poland, Taiwan and the U.S. Air Force in support of the Special Operations Command and is looking forward to welcoming Germany to that group. MQ-9B has also been featured in various U.S. Navy exercises, including Northern Edge, Integrated Battle Problem, RIMPAC, and Group Sail.
