FN Announces Release of FN SCAR 20S Precision Rifle

November 6th, 2018

(McLean, VA – November 6, 2018) FN America, LLC is pleased to announce the release of the highly-anticipated FN SCAR® 20S precision rifle, based on the FN MK20 SSR or Sniper Support Rifle currently fielded within USSOCOM. The 7.62x51mm-chambered rifle has been purpose-built to achieve superior long-range accuracy.

“The FN SCAR 20S is the latest addition to our battle-proven line-up of FN SCAR products and the first commercial SCAR release since we launched the 17S in 2010,” said Mark Cherpes, President and CEO for FN America, LLC. “Customers will notice that the FN SCAR 20S shares more commonalities than differences with the MK20 SSR and reaffirms our commitment to producing commercial versions of our iconic military firearms.”

The rifle achieves 1-MOA (minute of angle) accuracy to 100 yards with match-grade ammunition out of the box. The 20-inch, 1:12 twist, heavy profile barrel and barrel extension, and extended, monolithic receiver add the additional rigidity that reduces fluctuation or movement between shots while the extended receiver provides the much-needed rail space for high-powered optics. The custom-designed MK20 SSR buttstock adjusts to length of pull and comb height to customize the fit to each shooter while in the prone firing position, and the factory-installed, double-stage Geissele Super SCAR trigger achieves a 3.5-4.5-pound trigger pull.

Technical Specifications:
– Caliber: 7.62x51mm
– Barrel Length: 20 inches
– Barrel Twist Rate: 1:12
– Weight: 11.2 pounds
– O/A Length: 40.6 – 42.5 inches
– Operation: Short-stroke gas piston
– Finish: Flat Dark Earth (FDE)
– Capacity: (1) ten-round magazine; compatible with FN SCAR 17S 10- and 20-round magazines

Army’s Soldier and Squad Performance Research Institute Will Increase Lethality, Resilience

November 6th, 2018

NATICK, Mass. — “No Soldier ever fights alone,” says Cynthia Blackwell, the S2PRINT project director at the Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center, or NSRDEC.

The ways in which Soldiers interact individually, in squads and on small teams play a key role in success on the battlefield. This is one of the main ideas behind the creation of the Soldier Squad Performance Research Institute, or S2PRINT.

NSRDEC and the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, or USARIEM, have joined together to lead the development of this state-of-the-art facility, which is slated to be built at the Natick Soldier Systems Center in Natick, Massachusetts.

The institute will empower NSRDEC’s and USARIEM’s world-class scientists and engineers with a controlled, cutting-edge, and mission-relevant environment in which to perform applied studies to uncover ways to optimize Soldier and squad performance and enhance combat readiness.

U.S. Soldiers with the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) engage opposing forces in a simulated exercise during Saber Junction 18 at Hohenfels Training Area, Germany, Sept. 26, 2018. The ways in which Soldiers interact individually, in squads and on small teams will be a key area of study for the Army’s new Soldier Squad Performance Research Institute, or S2PRINT. (Photo Credit: U.S. Army photo by Cpl. Gabrielle Weaver)

S2PRINT’s emphasis is on Human Performance Optimization, with research focusing on the individual Soldier’s and the squad’s cognitive, social, physiological, physical, and nutrition-based performance. Blackwell explained that S2PRINT will provide the Army with a greater understanding of teams, leading to the optimization of team interactions and team dynamics.

S2PRINT will help researchers to develop validated performance and training strategies; tools and interventions for the Soldier, leader and small unit; techniques to mitigate injury; and interventions to increase Soldier and squad resilience and longevity.

Studies performed in the S2PRINT facility, which will include several operationally relevant laboratories, will help researchers baseline, measure, predict and optimize individual and small unit readiness, performance, and resiliency across real-world, mission-essential tasks. Outcomes/findings of this research will ultimately help improve readiness, enhance mission performance, and increase Soldier and squad lethality.

The new facility will also enhance NSRDEC’s and USARIEM’s already strong collaborations with top-notch academic institutions, cutting-edge industrial partners, and other DOD agencies and initiatives. As with other work performed by NSRDEC and USARIEM, the knowledge obtained through S2PRINT will lead to technologies and informational resources that will benefit not only warfighters but also first responders.

Moreover, Natick will be able to develop and evaluate prototype gear and emerging technologies more quickly than ever before, accelerating the delivery time of critical information and equipment to troops in the field — all while reducing costs.

S2PRINT is expected to become operational in the spring of 2023.

DLA Troop Support Plans To Greatly Expand Special Operations Equipment (SOE) Tailored Logistics Support (TLS) Program, Double Length and Triple Value Of Program

November 6th, 2018

Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support’s Special Operations Equipment (SOE) Tailored Logistics Support (TLS) Program was initially created in the 1990s to provide equipment to the military’s diving community. Since many military divers come from the SOF community, its use was expanded to include the supply of other specialized combat equipment.

Various types of special operational equipment and related incidental services may be provided including but not limited to: survival gear, tactical equipment, protective eyewear and vision enhancing equipment, escalation of force equipment, visit board search and seizure (VBSS), scuba gear, surface diving gear, thermal protection equipment, communication devices, compressors, hazardous material (HAZMAT), air purification devices, hyperbaric instrumentation, lifesaving equipment and other safety items.

The concept is simple. Multiple commercial companies are DLA contract holders and compete against one another to provide special equipment to organizations using the SOE TLS vehicle for procurement.

The program offers several advantages to the Department of Defense. First off, it allows customers to quickly fulfill requirements via a standing contract. Second, it relieves the burden on the government to stock every piece of equipment which might be needed. Concurrent with this, customers can get the latest version of needed equipment. Finally, it offers competitive pricing via task order bids for each requirement amongst the contract holders.

Currently, the SOE TLS contract is five years long in total and has a ceiling of $10 Billion. According to a special notice published by DLA, when the contract for the fifth-generation of the program is let, they want to expand the program to a total of 10 years, with the initial contract of two years and four additional two-year options. Likewise, they plan to triple the contract ceiling to $33 Billion. As in years past, they plan for this to be a small business set aside.

This expansion signals how successful the program has been for both DLA as well as its customers.

New Panteao Instructional Videos from Mike Boyle

November 6th, 2018

Columbia, SC, November 2, 2018 – Panteao is happy to announce the release of two new video titles from instructor Mike Boyle. Mike Boyle has been a firearms and use of force instructor for 37 years. He served with New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife, Bureau of Law Enforcement where he held the rank of Captain. He was the primary trainer of his agency for 22 years and is certified instructor in multiple firearms, chemical agent, impact weapon and empty hand disciplines. Mike has been an assistant police academy director and an adviser to the Police Training Commission on firearms training issues. He continues to maintain his certification as a police academy rangemaster and firearms instructor and his responsibilities include providing basic training as well as instructor level courses.

Make Ready with Mike Boyle: Combative Shotgun

The first video released is Combative Shotgun. When it comes to self-defense with a firearm, the most overlooked weapon is the shotgun. The reality is few weapons can match the lethality of it. As far back as World War I, the shotgun was feared in battle by the enemy and today it continues that reputation of being a fight stopper. In this video Mike Boyle reviews the history of the use of the shotgun in battle, types of shotguns, modifications, ammunition capabilities, patterning with buckshot, priorities, conditions of readiness, shooting positions, injured operator, low light shooting, stoppage reduction and transitions, home issues, multiple targets, and more.

Make Ready with Mike Boyle: Low Light Threat Management

The second video released is Low Light Threat Management. Concealed carry and self-defense doesn’t happen just during the day. Being able to defend yourself in low light scenarios is a critical skillset. In Low Light Threat Management, Mike Boyle reviews the importance of training in low light, human performance in low light, gear, hand-held and weapon mounted lights, lasers, night sights, conditions of readiness with a flashlight, shooting drills, and more.

The videos can be watched online via a PC or Mac, on a smartphone or tablet using the Panteao Make Ready Android and iTunes apps, or on television with the Panteao Make Ready channel on Roku, Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV.
