First Light USA’s Tomahawk Tactical Flashlights

Tuesday, March 12th, 2013

I’ve been a big fan of Tomahawk Tactical Flashlights for years now. Made by First Light USA, the style is unique. Its angle head design is optimized for a fist-style grip. Relying on LED lights, the Tomahawk offers versions in Red/Green (for blood-highlighting), Red, Blue, Red/Blue, Yellow-Green. The Red/Green mix is particularly interesting. Blood is a tough material to see under colored lights and medics were having a heck of a time differentiating blood and oil in night time IED incidents. For example, red light makes blood all but disappear and blue light turns blood black making it indistinguishable from oil. First Light worked on the issue and developed a great combination. Additionally, First Light offers the Tomahawk Task Light attachment for medics that can be configured as a Blue light for Fluorescein eye stain tests or UV light fluoresce certain fungal and bacterial infections.

Held at the ready, the buttons are within easy reach of your thumb and include momentary on/off, on/off and strobe settings. Using two CR123A batteries you should expect to get about 2 hours (highest setting) and 60 hours (lowest setting) for white light.

Drifire FR Undergarments

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

I’ve been a big fan of Drifire for several years now. They manufacture FR performance garments that don’t feel like FR. In addition to FR baselayer protection, their garments also incorporate moisture wicking and antimicrobial odor control characteristics. These aren’t some wash in treatment either but rather exist at the fiber level so they won’t wash or wear out.

Drifire

Available in a variety of colors including Black, Coyote, Desert Tan and Olive Drab the line is offered in the full gamut of sizes from X-Small – XXX-Large.

ESS Laser Protective Lens

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

ESS has introduced Laser Protective Lenses which not only provide protection from laser threats but also the same ballistic and UV protections found in all ESS glasses.

LPLs are created by impregnating dyes into ESS’ high-grade polycarbonate during the injection molding process. Each dye absorbs a specific light frequency, producing a colored lens capable of blocking the concentrated light emitted from laser devices at the specified nanometer wavelength(s) and optical density (OD).

Mobile GPS Retransmission “Snake” Kits

Thursday, February 14th, 2013

I recently found out about these Mobile GPS Retransmission “Snake” Kits. This thing is awesome. Essentially, it receives a GPS signal and then retransmits it inside a vehicle or aircraft. Unless your device is connected to an external antenna it won’t update reliably inside the platform because oftentimes the GPS signal will not penetrate the skin. In fact, the GPS Live Inside technology was developed for use with the C17. By keeping your GPS devices up-to-date during a transit, you can continue mission planning and increase situational awareness both enroute to and on an objective.

Snake Kit

The GLI-ECHO II is the brains of these “snake” kits, offering 4 key safety features:
-Power Control
-Jam Detection
-Built-In-Test (BIT
-Fault Isolation

The kit already has Safety of Flight Approval from the USAF Mobility Command Systems Group on several aircraft platforms. Additionally, it can be installed by the user and additional configurations are available. ADS Inc offers these kits and they can assemble a set up to accommodate your mission equipment and air or ground vehicle.
