I’m Off Attending Scout Leader Training This Weekend

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

This is the first time in several years that I will be away from the site for any measurable amount of time. It’s a necessary evil if I am to complete Woodbadge training for the Boy Scouts of America. By the time you read this I will have been gone for over a day. While I’m out, enjoy these classic articles from our archive of over 5,000 posts. You can start by watching this commercial that I used to see as a kid. To me, that was Scouting.

I grew up with Scouting and obviously I had great parents since they gave me the opportunity to join Scouts, first as a Cub and later as a Boy Scout and Explorer. The experience left a lifelong impression on me. “Be Prepared” is more than just Scouting’s motto. Today, it seems to be a lost art. As an adult I apply the skills I learned in Scouting everyday. Once, when I was home on leave from the service I was able to visit my old Scout Troop and tell them that I had a job where I applied the field living and survival skills I learned as a kid in my job. I didn’t watch someone else do those things on The Discovery Channel, or watch a Youtube video of some guy starting a fire. Rather I learned how to live in the wild with my own two hands. That’s something that’s missing from most children’s lives; hands on, outdoor living. So this is a plug for Scouting. If you have kids yourself, or young relatives, or even friend’s children, get them involved in Scouting. Boys and Girls both. They are great programs that get them outside and learning how to do things; to live and love the outdoors. In addition to Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts has Explorer and Venture programs for teenage girls. I mean, hey, they are 100 years old, they must be doing something right.

Fuel Efficient Ground Vehicle Demonstrator (Bravo version)

Friday, May 4th, 2012

Last week, the US Army unveiled the Fuel Efficient ground vehicle Demonstrator (Bravo version) or FED Bravo.

The Army collaborated with 18 students at the College for Creative Studies, or CCS, in Detroit to design the concept vehicle to meet specific Army requirements for fuel economy, performance, protection, payload and interior layout.

FED Bravo sports a Ford 4.4-liter twin turbocharged V8 diesel engine capable of producing 268 hp. Other features include:

• Road-coupled parallel hybrid drive system. The front axle is powered by an electric motor, while the rear-wheel drive is linked to a hybrid fuel-powered and electric system.

• Integrated starter-generator that shuts off the engine during idle time and restarts it when the driver presses the accelerator which improves fuel economy and reduces emissions.

• Six-speed auto transmission coupled with an advanced lithium-ion battery with high energy and power density.

• The full-power hydraulic brake system with antilock brakes is combined with the vehicle’s steering system to supply the hydraulic pressure demands for the steering, eliminating a second pump and improving efficiency.

• Carbon ceramic brake rotors with advanced coating for durability, plus low-drag aluminum brake calipers.

• Tubular space from chassis for better rigidity-to-weight ratio combined with armored cab and V-shaped hull for protection from blasts.

Cocoon Grid-It!

Friday, May 4th, 2012

Grid-It! is a patent pending object retention system that relies on a weave of rubberized elastic bands to hold personal objects firmly in place. It’s great for use as an insert in bags to organize your kit. It’s uses are limited only by your imagination. Also, Grid-It! is available in a variety of sizes.

FirstSpear Six-Pack

Friday, May 4th, 2012

First-Spear has a new modular LBE pouch they call the First Spear ‘Six-Pack’. It’s designed to carry six (6) forty mike-mike rounds in two tiers of three (3) rounds each, one above the other. The Six-Pack, designed to occupy a minimal amount of real estate on your load out, buckles closed and drops open to access all six 40mm. Watch for it on the First-Spear website.

DR wrote this article but I have to tell you that I handled a prototype about two months ago and when I saw it I was like, “genius.” As you can see, it pops open and there they are, two trays of rounds. It was originally designed for users of the Mk14 Milkor USA grenade launcher, because they have to get at so many rounds at one time, but it looks great for any grenadier.

Today, Program Executive Officer Soldier will change hands during the Change of Charter ceremony at Fort Belvoir. This also marks the 10th anniversary of PEO Soldier as an organization. I am unable to attend due to a previous engagement but I want to wish MG Nichols well in her next assignment as commander of Army Contracting Command, Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama and pass on my congratulations to BG Paul A. Ostrowski as he takes the reins of PEO Soldier. It is a dynamic organization and no other program office touches the lives of Soldiers more. Good Luck, Sir!
