My Impression of the New GLOCK 30S

Tuesday, January 15th, 2013

20130114-161841.jpg

I had an opportunity to shoot the new GLOCK 30S today. The subcompact .45 was designed as a backup gun for LEOs carrying G21 and G21SF sidearms. The idea is that it chambers the same round and can use the longer spare magazines if needed. The G30S uses a 10 round dual stack magazine so you can also run one in the chamber for a total of 11 rounds. Once again, the plus side is that it will accept the G21’s 13 round magazines. It incorporates the SF body of the G30 along with a slim slide of the G36. As you know, the G36 uses a special single stack magazine so it isn’t compatible with its bigger brothers.

However, the G30S remains a stubby, fat dual stack pistol. Even the SF variants of GLOCK pistols aren’t exactly thin. It’s great for what use as a backup but I don’t look at it as a primary weapon due to its size. For example, in spite of its subcompact size, GLOCK has adopted a familiar work around. In order to accommodate all three fingers on the pistol grip G30S magazines feature an extension. Then, you’ve got the shorter barrel and associated sight radius. It’s a niche weapon for a niche application and I’m glad they made it for those needing a primary sidearm compatible backup piece. It’s really designed to be paired with a G21(SF). It’s just not something I would expect everyone to go out and purchase for EDC.

Ruger Wants You to Take Action Now!

Monday, January 14th, 2013

I think this speaks for itself and right now, we need our voices to be heard. Especially today. Tomorrow, the Vice President will unveil his recommendations for firearms restrictions. But, the administration needs Congress to buy in on their plans. Let your legislators know how you feel. Thank you Ruger for being a positive voice for our Second Amendment Rights.

Hydrapak Announces Partnerships with London Bridge Trading and Source One Distributors

Monday, January 14th, 2013

This announcement by Hydrapak, may well have some interesting implications for a market long dominated by Camelbak and to a lesser extent Source Hydration. Hydrapak has been around since 2001 and been an OEM provider of hydration bladders. LBT is well known for producing quality load carrying and armor systems and Source One Distributors brings their TLS and prime vendor experience to the table. It looks to be quite a combo.

Hydrapak, a leading global supplier of active-lifestyle hydration equipment, today announced partnerships with London Bridge Trading, a leading equipment designer and manufacturer for the United States Armed Forces, and Source One Distributors, a top military equipment distributor.

The new collaborations, featuring Hydrapak’s ultra-durable 1st Wave technology, make the Oakland-based company a leading supplier of hydration solutions for American troops at home and abroad.

“Hydrapak’s innovative hydration technologies and Source One’s knowledge of military distribution channels and tactical gear will allow us to provide additional assistance to the men and women of our armed forces,” said Vinny Chhibber, Source One’s marketing manager.

“Though our two companies are in a new relationship, Hydrapak has worked with us like we’ve been together for years,” said Vincent Moran, LBT’s vice-president of purchasing. “We look forward to a bright future with Hydrapak.”

Hydrapak introduced its 1st Wave hydration systems in 2011, its first product line designed specifically to the requirements of military, law enforcement, and industrial needs. In addition to reservoirs constructed with extra-thick thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), 1st Wave products also feature TPU- and Neoprene-insulated drinking tubes and dust covers for bite valves – design innovations that acknowledge the harsh environments where soldiers serve.

“We’re a hydration company that’s willing to innovate and capable of innovating,” said Hydrapak CEO and Lead Engineer Matt Lyon. He added that the company’s experience as an OEM provider for top brands such as The North Face, Salomon, and DaKine makes it uniquely suited to design and distribution partnerships.
