Finally, Someone Is Buying Freedom Group

Wednesday, March 12th, 2014

CNN reports via PR Newswire that Global Digital Solutions has filed a Form 8-K and announced an Unsolicited Letter of Intent to Acquire Remington Outdoor Company (aka Freedom Group) for $1.082 Billion.

Richard J. Sullivan, GDSI’s Chairman and CEO, commented on this move as well as two additional acquisitions.

“The GDSI team is extremely excited and confident about all three of these proposed acquisitions. There are powerful synergies between Freedom and the two other companies that will fuel our future growth along with the transformation of the cyber arms industry. Cyber-based technologies, coupled with enhanced digital product development and distribution, will be key factors in achieving results that could match – and probably even exceed – what we were able to produce at Digital Angel Corp and Applied Digital Solutions (“Applied”). At Applied, we saw our market capitalization reach $2.5 billion, roughly five times revenue and nearly 25 times EBITDA.”

GDSI is an interesting company to say the least, specializing in “cyber arms” and tracking. For instance, they patented the first-ever FDA-approved, human-implantable RFID tags that continue to be used by several foreign militaries as well as an implantable GPS tracking system for sheep and Gatekeeper, a small arms safety system. It offers, “Encrypted, password-protected, digital, trigger-locking capability;Secure, real-time online tracking; and Encrypted, cloud-enabled databases.” Are you rolling your eyes as much as I am yet?

CEO Sullivan discusses Gatekeeper in this quote:

“Our team plans to drive unprecedented consolidation and convergence in the cyber arms arena at least in part through the acquisition strategy outlined in our Form 8-K filing and elsewhere. We’ll also do this by leveraging technologies like GDSI Gatekeeper, which we announced on January 23, 2014. Gatekeeper represents a revolutionary suite of technology-enhanced services that offer personalized, digital small arms safety and security solutions in commercial and military-related markets.

SHOT Show – CRKT No Bother by Ryan Johnson

Tuesday, March 11th, 2014

RMJ Tactical’s Ryan Johnson told us he has a little help in creating some of his designs. Take for instance the upcoming No Bother from CRKT.

20140310-153344.jpg

Like me, Ryan does a lot with his kids. He told me that one day he and his daughter were out and she sketched a neck knife design out and wrote “No Bother” under it. Ryan asked her what that was about and she said, dead pan, “no one is going to bother you when you have this.” The name stuck along with the overall design.

This full tang neck knife is made from 8Cr13MoV with a 2.1″ blade and overall length of 5.29″ with a non-reflective, black oxide stone wash finish and a reverse tanto tip. Thanks to the non-removable ABS scales it only weights 2.2 oz.

The sheath can be worn several ways including around the neck via Paracord with integrated release safety fob to avoid choking as well as attached to PALS webbing. The sheath retains the blade even when tip up.

U.S. Ordnance M60E6 Wins Royal Danish Army GPMG Replacement Program

Tuesday, March 11th, 2014

The Royal Danish Army recently announced it has selected the U.S. Ordnance M60E6 as its new General Purpose Machine Gun through its GPMG Replacement Program, the trials for which have been held since last year.

m60e6

The M60E6 was one of two finalists in the program, along the HK121. The M60E6 was chosen for the benefits it holds over the current M/62 MG3 which has been in use with the Danish Army since 1962:

– Weighs 9.35 kg, approx. 3 kg lighter than the M/62, with better weight distribution
– Better control of alternative shot positions, such as kneeling and standing
– Lower ROF of 550 RPM when compared with the M/62’s 1200 RPM, which improves shooter accuracy, reduces ammunition consumption, and significantly minimizes the risk of collateral damage
– Single shot capability
– Reduced recoil
– Picatinny rails allows for the addition of accessories such as tactical lights, lasers, etc.
– Stable adjustable stand
– Fast barrel change is possible without the use of gloves

Approximately 700 LMGs have been purchased, which are scheduled for delivery starting late 2014. Additionally, the Danish Army is also in the process of obtaining an optics and sensor package for the new LMG, including unspecified daylight optics, thermal optics, red dot optics, tactical lights, tactical lasers, and laser range finders. This package is expected to be delivered starting 2015.
