FirstSpear Friday Focus – FS OEM Partner Series – SAFRAN Optics 1

Friday, September 6th, 2019

Today we have another edition of FirstSpear’s OEM Partner Series. This time we are featuring one of FirstSpear’s OEM customers: SAFRAN Optics 1, a global leader in the design and production of electro-optic systems. FirstSpear manufactures several padded pouches and pockets to secure and protect some of SAFRAN Optics 1 most advanced systems like the E-COSI.

What is an E-COSI?

The Enhanced Clip-On SWIR Imager (E-COSI) increases situational awareness by overlaying an optically aligned SWIR (Shortwave Infrared) on a user’s existing NVDs. Its AR (Augmented Reality) capability has a HUD (Head’s Up Display) that provides real-time, geo-referenced, XML-based AR as well as navigation and route execution guidance.

E-COSI Highlights

· Single battery operation (3.5+ hrs), or with external battery pack (up to 24hrs)

· Compact and lightweight, attaches in seconds onto simple brackets, no tools required

· Simple push-button controls

· Becomes a remote HUD for identifying teammates, targets and route execution

· MIL-STD-810 Tested

· Comes with a custom FirstSpear Berry Compliant soft pouch

· Has an optional see-through day option (for See-Spot operation), stay tuned for a continuation of our OEM Partner Series with Optics 1, focusing on their E-COSI See-Spot Extender, a 2x magnification direct view see-spot device.

Why was the E-COSI originally developed?

Optics 1 works directly with government customers to understand threats on the battlefield and develop innovative, technological solutions to counter those threats. A government customer sought our excellence in electro-optics for the development of a SWIR weapon sighting system. The device required the ability to see SWIR energy while wearing NVDs, used in conjunction with a SWIR laser aiming/illumination device. Together, we developed the E-COSI clip-on device which has been fielded to most branches of the US Military, and foreign allied forces.

How did the relationship between FirstSpear and Optics 1 begin and why did Optics 1 ultimately choose FS manufacturing?

Optics 1 and FirstSpear have been working together for 3 years. FirstSpear maintains a reputation for proven performance and has always been easy to work with in the development of pouch systems for our electro-optic devices.

Any new product developments between Optics 1 and FS in the future?

FirstSpear is Optics 1’s go-to partner high quality custom material solutions. As we develop new products we always consider FirstSpear as our partner for device pouches.

DSEI 2019: Steadicopter Will Present its Next Generation Black Eagle 50, an Advanced Lightweight Unmanned Robotic Helicopter

Friday, September 6th, 2019

New capabilities include an inertial navigation system with no dependence on GPS, as well as support for naval missions

DSEI, ExCeL, London, September 10-13, 2019, Hall S10, Stand 308

September 2. Steadicopter, a leader in the Rotary Unmanned Aerial Systems (RUAS) industry, will present its next generation Black Eagle 50 advanced lightweight unmanned robotic helicopter at DSEI. New capabilities include an inertial navigation system with no dependence on GPS, as well as support for naval missions.

Steadicopter’s Black Eagle 50 unmanned helicopter has been upgraded with several additional new features and is tailored for naval missions with its robust mechanical and electronic capabilities that support flight in maritime environmental conditions. The company also recently signed a cooperative agreement with Israel Shipyards for the marketing of the Black Eagle as part of the defense, intelligence and surveillance systems installed on its OPV Family.

The Black Eagle 50 features a special inertial navigation system capability, based on input from the system’s inertial and other sensors. Through a unique and smart navigation algorithm, this input enables the continuation of the flight and the mission, without relying on GPS. This allows the Black Eagle 50 a significant advantage in GPS-denied areas.

According to Noam Lidor, Sales & Marketing Director at Steadicopter, “In recent months, we have invested considerable resources in improving and equipping our unmanned helicopter in order to adapt it to a wide range of missions both on land and at sea. We have also developed cooperation with a number of Israeli companies ? each a leader in its field ? so that we can equip our helicopter with the highest quality and most advanced payloads.”

The Black Eagle 50 is a VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) robotic observation system. It is an ideal solution for tactical maritime and land Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions.

A data link connects the aircraft with the ground controller, enabling the transmission of live video and data between the two. The system has a steady hovering endurance of up to 3 hours and flight endurance of up to 4 hours. At only 27kg, the Black Eagle 50 is extremely lightweight and compact, with a maximum take-off weight of 35Kg, and payload capacity of 5Kg. It has a communication range of up to 150km, depending on the client’s requirements, and a service ceiling of up to 10,000ft. Its total length is just 2540mm, while its maximum air speed is 70 knots (126Km/h) with a cruising speed of 45 knots (81 Km/h).

Rapid Response Vest

Thursday, September 5th, 2019

Introducing the Rapid Response Vest (RRV), a high visibility, compact, and easily concealable identifier system for the first responder market. The RRV is a new take on first responder identification for highly dynamic situations and provides departments a color coded and layered response system that can be quickly deployed individually or as part of a unit. The RRV is lightweight vest built from ANSI rated mesh and reflective tape that allows clear 50’ identification of the wearer to the public and other Law Enforcement officials in both day and low light environments. The RRV can be quickly and easily donned over Undercover (UC) clothing, uniforms, jackets, and tactical vests. Unlike other sash or vest style identification systems the RRV allows the wearer access to both chest and belt mounted equipment thus not limiting their effectiveness to deal with any active threats that may be in the area. The RRV is currently available in a number of configurations for department or individual purchases. Please contact B4DI for more information or if a customized solution is needed.
