U.S. Army Special Operations Command Troops Test RA-1 Ram Air Parachute Automatic Activation Device

FORT BRAGG, North Carolina – Airborne equipment testers here are busy with Special Operations Soldiers testing the Army’s newest Enhanced Electronic Automatic Activation Device (EEAAD).

The Airborne and Special Operations Test Directorate (ABNSOTD) is gathering data from the operational user to support an Army-wide fielding decision to replace the aging reserve automatic activation device currently fielded to military free-fall (MFF) units.

“The EEAAD provides the capability of the rigger shop to download the data instantly, which is not provided by the currently fielded automated activation device,” said a Parachute Rigger with the U.S. Army Special Operations Command.

The ABNSOTD first completed risk reduction efforts for the EEAAD using only ABNSOTD test jumpers to ensure that the intended test item did not impose additional and unforeseen risks or hazards to the jumper before operational test jumps.

Operational testing started in the vertical wind tunnel.

“This allowed the test team to observe the approach load system under simulated free-fall conditions being employed by a MFF qualified test jumper,” said James Cochran (JC), a seasoned Military Test Plans Analyst with the ABNSOTD.

“The ABNSOTD employed a host of risk reduction measures to ensure the potential test item was safe and effective from the intended user’s standpoint,” he said.

Operational Soldiers from USASOC finished testing with the RA-1 main parachute and reserve with the EEAAD installed by conducting MFF test jumps into the Laurinburg, North Carolina drop zone.

“The EEAAD will not only provide MFF operators with a next-generation reserve parachute activation device but will also facilitate after action reviews,” said Lt. Col Derek Johnson, Chief of ABNSOTD’s test division.

“The EEAAD will also support jump incident investigations by providing the ability to download and analyze flight data at the unit level,” he added.

The operational testing consisted of new user training and military free fall jumps followed by data collection of jump data, downloaded from the EEAAD.

“The simplicity of the menus and setting provides more confidence to the jumper that the device will work as expected,” said one USASOC Operator.

It can record video, as well as several color palettes in black/hot and white/hot, as well as color modes, and with the press of a button, acquire range to target. The integrated laser rangefinder targets distances up to 1,000 y/m day or night.

Another product on its way to the Ukrainian forces is the ATN PS31-3 Night Vision Goggles. An essential piece of combat technology, the ATN PS31-3 is a dual night vision goggle system that has become a standard for operators and tactical units around the globe. New enhanced capabilities are found in the new design of the binoculars night vision device (BNVD), and its enhanced field of view (FOV) – now at 50 degrees, giving a tactical team a superior advantage in the field.

MKS Announces Ophir Long Range, Ruggedized 60-1200mm f/4 Continuous Zoom Lens for Cooled MWIR Cameras

(NASDAQ: MKSI), a global provider of technologies that enable advanced processes and improve productivity, has announced the Ophir® SupIR 60-1200 MWIR f/4 lens, the latest addition to the company’s series of lenses designed for SXGA/HD 10µm and 15µm VGA pitch FPA (focal plane array) cooled MWIR cameras. This new, high precision lens is equipped with an automated zoom interface and continuous zoom to provide a sharp and clear image across the entire field-of-view and throughout the full zoom range. This makes it ideal for the demanding requirements of Counter Unmanned Systems (C-UAS) applications and long range observation and surveillance systems.

The Ophir SupIR 60-1200mm f/4 has a horizontal field-of-view (H-FOV) of 0.3°-8.6°. It is the newest addition to the SupIR SXGA/HD 10µm detectors compatible series of lenses which are designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions, providing an operating temperature range from -32ºC to +85ºC. These lenses features Ophir’s world-renowned abrasion-resistant, anti-reflective (AR) coatings; IP 67 sealing; and a mechanical design that withstands severe shock and vibration. They are designed for ease of mechanical and electronic integration using Ophir’s standard software for optimal integration, calibration, and field operation. In addition, the lenses are equipped with zoom controller features for continuous zoom with focus retention, automatic focus compensation throughout temperature and zoom ranges, close objects focus mode, focus blurring for NUC calculation, and full manual and automatic control of zoom and focus positions.

Additional features include a full-length top Picatinny rail (460mm), along with M-Lock system at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, and an adjustable folding bipod that can easily be flipped into the required position, giving the shooter more flexibility to adjust to any shooting situation. The MIL.-STD magazine is easy to insert into the Sniper rifle and, with a capacity of 20 rounds, enables the user to be more effective over an extended period of time. The rifle is adaptable to all zoom riflescopes available today for medium to long-rang shooting. A locking mechanism prevents any harm or injury to the shooter in case of bullet explosion out of the chamber, and a bolt carrier tail prevents the hummer reaching the firing pin before locking has been completed.
