Blast from the Past – Dog Faced Soldier

Saturday, August 26th, 2023

I served in the US Army’s 3rd Infantry Division from 1988-1990, in Würzburg, Federal Republic Of Germany. The Marne Division, as it is known, has a song, “Dog Faced Soldier” dating from WWII, as well as a mascot named Rocky, created in 1965 by none other than Walt Disney, for just $1.

Rocky’s name hails from WWI, where 3ID held like a rock during the second Battle of the Marne River. This distinguished service also earned the Division its motto, the French “Nous Resterons La” (English – We Shall Remain Here).

I find it rather unfortunate that the song “Dog Faced Soldier” written by two Infantrymen, was altered after the Division moved to Ft Stewart to make it gender neutral.

Here is the version we sang. If you attended PLDC at the 3ID NCO Academy in Kitzengen, you had to learn and sing it as well, regardless of which unit you served with. This often led to altered lyrics which weren’t so flattering for us ‘Dog Faced Soldiers.’

“I wouldn’t give a bean,
to be a fancy-pants Marine
I’d rather be a dog-faced soldier like I am.
I wouldn’t trade my old O.D.’s
for all the Navy’s dungarees
for I’m the marching pride of Uncle Sam.
All the posters you see say the Army builds men,
Well, they’re tearing me down to build me over again.
I’m just a dog-faced soldier
with a rifle on my shoulder
and I eat raw meat for breakfast every day.
So feed me ammunition, and keep me in the 3rd Division
For your dog-faced soldier boy’s O.K.”

Of course, the only constant is change. Take for example this version of the song from 1955’s “To Hell And Back” a movie which tells the story of the most famous Marne Soldier of all, Audie Murphy. The lyrics are different than the version I learned.

Pre-Order – Soteira Systems Covert MK1

Saturday, August 26th, 2023

Designed with comfort and utility at their core, the Covert MK1s are manufactured from high grade, wicking, flexible and fast drying sports fabric.

They incorporate an inner panel specifically designed to ward off chaffing, and to stand up to the rigours of any mission. The outer thigh pockets are purpose built to hold passports, covert radios or other such items with ease and security. The inner pubic stash pocket is the most discrete secretion on the MK1s, whilst still allowing ease of access. Around the waistband there are 9 slots for small items such as handcuff keys, SD & sim cards, shims etc. These slots are designed with ease of access in mind, but utilise elastic tension and bodyform to keep items secure.

Whether you are law enforcement, military, an EDC aficionado or security conscious, the Covert MK1 is configurable and suitable for all.

Modernising Defence Manufacturing: Disruptive Capabilities to be Displayed at DSEI 2023

Friday, August 25th, 2023

London, 23 August 2023

Technologies that will reshape the defence manufacturing industry and equip armed forces for years to come will be on display at this year’s Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) event.

Held on the 12th-15th September at ExCeL in London, the event will showcase the latest advances in defence manufacturing with an extensive range of agile approaches including additive manufacturing (AM), Internet of Things (IoT) technology and digital design tools.

The manufacturing industry and the defence sector have traditionally been closely aligned, with advances in manufacturing technologies often propelling the evolution of military capabilities and vice versa. Today, this dynamic remains unchanged, as disruptive solutions are expected to significantly alter the defence industry, reducing the cost of the production of tools and parts, enabling faster delivery and crucially, bolstering supply chain resilience.

Speaking on the event Grant Burgham, DSEI Director, commented:

“At DSEI this year, our manufacturing exhibitors are expected to take centre stage, reflecting a 200% surge in their representation – a testament to the vital role the manufacturing sector will play in fostering an integrated force.

“The defence industry champions UK manufacturing and exports, while recognising its significant impact on job creation and supply chain resilience. With exhibitors not limited to the defence and security sectors we’re looking forward to welcoming companies and organisations such as DMG Mori, Böllhoff, G&H Aerospace and Defence, Helix among many others.”

Sponsoring DSEI’s Manufacturing Hub is the High Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult, a strategic research and innovation hub for industry, commercialising the UK’s most advanced manufacturing ideas. Established and supported by Innovate UK, HVM Catapult provides manufacturers access to world-class research, development facilities and expertise that would otherwise be out of reach.

A central focus of DSEI this year will be the disruptive capabilities of AM, which has demonstrated its remarkable ability to revolutionise the defence industry’s approach to designing, creating, and maintaining critical infrastructure and equipment. Embracing the flexibility of rapid prototyping, AM opens opportunities to alleviate supply chain burdens, enhance design agility, and streamline operational readiness.

Within the Manufacturing Hub, two HVM Catapult centres, the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) will be demonstrating their capabilities.

The MTC will be displaying components which demonstrate the breadth of its AM capability and other technologies that can help the sector improve frontline equipment availability. The AMRC will showcase its ‘MediTel’ robot, a remotely operated robotic system designed to provide medical triage to patients on the battlefield using virtual reality (VR) technology.

Visitors to the stand will also understand how HVM Catapult plays a crucial role in providing industry-leading training and is developing long-term strategies to futureproof the UK workforce.

Katherine Bennett CBE, HVM Catapult chief executive, said:

“We are delighted to be exhibiting at DSEI in 2023, where visitors will be able to see our centres’ capabilities and our combined impact in the defence sector, harnessing the talents of our 3,500 staff and with the backing of Innovate UK.

“In the Manufacturing Hub we will be demonstrating how HVM Catapult engineers are leaders in harnessing manufacturing data, how we are enabling faster delivery through developing supply chain resilience, how our industry-leading training is futureproofing workforces, and how we can become the defence sector’s agile manufacturing technology partner.”

Mack Defense Receives Order for 135 Additional Trucks for the U.S. Army M917A3 Heavy Dump Truck Program

Friday, August 25th, 2023

ALLENTOWN, PA (Aug. 23, 2023) – Mack Defense announced today that the U.S. military has ordered an additional 135 Mack Defense M917A3 Heavy Dump Trucks (HDTs).

The additional vehicles are part of the previously announced firm-fixed price $296 million contract over seven years that the Army awarded Mack Defense in 2018. For this new order, 60 HDTs are being purchased by the U.S. Army Reserve, 74 are being funded by the presidential budget and one is being purchased by the U.S. Navy. With this tranche, a total of 446 HDTs have been ordered to date.

The HDTs are a key component in construction and maintenance missions for infrastructure assets, such as airfields, roadways, landing strips, supply facilities and motor pools.

“With every additional order of a Mack HDT, the U.S. Armed Forces are reiterating their confidence in our product,” said David Hartzell, president of Mack Defense. “The U.S. military puts these trucks through the paces every day, and each subsequent requisition shows that the Mack HDT is meeting the military’s demanding requirements.”

The Army previously had ordered 311 HDTs, which are based on the commercially available Mack® Granite® model and spec’d with heavier-duty rear axles, all-wheel drive, increased suspension ride height and other ruggedized features to meet the unique requirements of the U.S. military.

The Mack Granite HDT model is a modern truck equipped with modern technology, such as ABS and other active safety systems. The Granite model is user-friendly, comfortable and safer to operate compared with other past models used by the Army, which is key to the Army’s investment in the new HDTs, Hartzell said. The Granite HDTs and the production line at the Mack Experience Center (MEC) in Allentown, Pennsylvania, were both inspected by the government quality auditors to ensure both met expectations.

Production of the HDTs at the MEC began in Q1 2021, following an investment of $6.5 million to create a dedicated HDT production line at the facility. The production line helps fulfill the M917A3 contract, while allowing Mack Defense to produce other vehicle variants.

The production line in the MEC is in Mack’s former Customer Adaptation Center, where vehicle modifications occurred. The Customer Adaptation Center has since moved to Mack’s Lehigh Valley Operations (LVO) in Macungie, Pennsylvania, where all Mack Class 8 vehicles for North America and export are assembled.
