The Battle of Mogadishu

Saturday, October 3rd, 2026

On this date in 1993, an event occurred which would forever transform US Special Operations. The Battle of Mogadish was fought by a joint organization named ”TF Ranger” deployed to Somalia in support of a UN-led humanitarian mission. Their mission was to dismantle an armed militia led by General Mohamed Aidid which was threatening that aid program.

By October 3rd, the Task Force had several raids, but the events of tahtvday would be unlike anything they had yet experienced. The mission was to capture key leaders of the Aidid Militia in the city’s Olympic Hotel who had been opposing UN efforts to feed the locals.

Unfortunately, during the exfil portion of the raid, a battle ensued which claimed the lives of 18 Americans and wounded another 73. Additionally, CW3 Michael Durant was captured by the Aideed militia after being shot down while piloting his Blackhawk. Fortunately, Durant was later repatriated and went on to retire from the 160th.

Of the men killed that day, two would be awarded the Medal of Honor, Delta Operators Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart, for their selfless efforts to protect Durant after his aircraft, callsign Super 64, was shot down.

A few years ago, the US Army reevaluated the awards presented to the participants of that battle and amongst the Ranger element, upgraded 60 veteran’s awards including 58 Silver Stars and two Distinguished Flying Crosses. The order of battle included other organizations and their Soldiers have received similar upgrades.

If you are unfamiliar with the events, one of the best accounts of the battle is contained in the book, “Blackhawk Down” by author Mark Bowden. Much of the information was serialized prior to the book’s publication in the Philadelphia Enquirer. Later this was made into a movie bearing the same name.

Please take a moment to remember these men and their sacrifice.

Additionally, the 75th Ranger Regiment was created on this day in 1984, along with the stand up of its 3rd Battalion. Four decades later, the Ranger Regiment boasts five battalions of some of the most elite warriors on the face of our planet.

Qore Performance Expands CATAMARAN Gen 3 Universal Plate Carrier Adapter Panel with New Coyote Brown Colorway

Friday, October 2nd, 2026

Knoxville, TN (September 29, 2026) — Qore Performance, Inc. has announced the official availability of its CATAMARAN Gen 3 Universal Plate Carrier Adapter Panel in Coyote Brown. Joining the original Black colorway, the new Coyote Brown option allows military units and law enforcement agencies with strict uniform regulations to integrate Qore Performance ICEVENTS® and ICEPLATE® Gen 3 thermoregulation and hydration tools into issued body armor without policy conflicts.

Built on the ICEPLATE EXO® Gen 3 architecture, CATAMARAN Gen 3 adds a laser-cut Velcro® loop field to any plate carrier or soft armor vest on the market. This universal platform allows operators to retrofit both legacy and contemporary issued armor, including the Crye Precision JPC 2.0, U.S. Army MSV, and USMC PC Gen III, with any combination of cooling, heating, hydration, or ventilation desired without permanently modifying plate carriers/body armor.

Technical Specifications and System Capabilities

  • Regulatory Uniformity: The Coyote Brown colorway maintains a compliant appearance on issued plate carriers and armor chassis.
  • Universal Non-Permanent Attachment: Mounts to anyhard or soft armor vest (MOLLE or slick) using MOLLE, Velcro® One-Wrap, elastic side straps, or elastic shock cord without permanent modifications.
  • Thermoregulation Integration: Serves as the mounting foundation for ICEVENTS® Classic Plate Carrier Ventilation Pontoons for evaporative airflow, or the IMS Pro Gen 3 system to combine evaporative cooling with ICEPLATE® Gen 3 conductive cooling, heating, and hydration.
  • Ultralight Hydrophobic Construction: Built from laser-cut laminate, the panel weighs 1.6 ounces (~3.8 ounces total when paired with ICEVENTS® pontoons) and measures 0.125 inches thick, resisting water absorption and sweat weight gain.

UF PRO Expands Its Rain Protection Range with Monsoon X

Friday, October 2nd, 2026

KOMENDA, SLOVENIA (1 October 2026)

UF PRO has introduced the Monsoon X Tactical Rain Jacket and Tactical Rain Pants, a new lightweight hard-shell system developed for sustained operations in heavy rain, wind and foul weather.

The Monsoon X is UF PRO’s lightest hard-shell rain system. It combines 100% waterproof protection with a lightweight, low-bulk 3-layer laminate that stretches in two directions. This provides greater freedom of movement while maintaining compatibility with body armour, backpacks and other tactical equipment.

The Monsoon X Rain Jacket weighs 0.80 kg in size L, while the Rain Pants weigh 0.60 kg in the same size. Both garments provide waterproof, windproof and breathable protection and are easy to pack and deploy as weather conditions change.

“Rain protection should never get in the way of the job. With Monsoon X, we focused on reducing weight and bulk while adding stretch, so professionals can keep moving comfortably with the rest of their gear, even during long periods of heavy rain,” said Dejan Kastelic, Head of Research and Development at UF PRO.

The jacket features long ventilation openings that release excess heat and provide direct access to equipment worn underneath. Its helmet-compatible hood uses the UF PRO Hood/Harness® system to follow the wearer’s head movements, while removable air/pac® shoulder inserts improve comfort when carrying backpacks, plate carriers and other equipment.

Designed as rapidly deployable overpants, the Monsoon X Rain Pants feature full-length side zippers that allow them to be put on or removed without taking off boots. A modified UF PRO Waist/Flex system and detachable suspenders help maintain a stable fit during movement. Adjustable lower hems and integrated boot hooks secure the pants over footwear in wet and windy conditions.

With their combination of low weight, 2-way stretch and packable construction, the Monsoon X Rain Jacket and Rain Pants provide a more mobility-focused option for professionals requiring full protection during prolonged exposure to severe weather.

The new Monsoon X garment system will be available from 15 October 2026. Learn more: ufpro.com/int/c/foul-weather-gear.

Atchisson’s .22 LR Conversion 1979 Patent (Plus a Bug and a Birthday) – Today in Guns

Friday, October 2nd, 2026

Today in Guns, 02 October (1979, a Tuesday). October 2nd marks the anniversary of several significant events in weapons, warfare, and equipment history. Foremost among these for this article (though not for the day) is U.S. Patent 4,169,329, which you’ll read about below.

Thanks to Rock Island Auction for this image.

We’ll also look at a 1918 “pilotless aerial torpedo” (a very early incarnation of the OWA-UAS drones we see on the battlefield today) and a very important birthday.

We’ll start with the patent, granted to Maxwell G. Atchisson nearly 50 years ago, for a Weapon conversion apparatus. The “apparatus” in question was designed for  “…converting a firearm of a first caliber to fire cartridges of a second caliber.” In short, it was a drop-in conversion system that let an AR-15 or M16 shoot the .22 LR cartridge.

1979’s Conversion: Better Than the ’73

Drop-in sub-caliber conversion kits were by no means a new thing when Atchisson patented his design. In fact, it wasn’t even his first conversion effort. The patent for his “Weapon conversion bolt assembly device” was filed in ’71 and granted in ’73.

M16/AR15 22LR Conversion Kit

An Atchisson M16/AR15 22LR Conversion Kit via Madison Guns.

The 1979 assembly, however, overcame some deficiencies in the earlier version (and functioned differently). It became the first successful commercial design. We’re still shooting guns and kits descended from it today.

Note: Yes, this is the same Atchisson who developed the AA-12 “Atchisson Assault Shotgun.”

Also on this date…

The Kettering Aerial Torpedo, better known as the Kettering Bug.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (not counting balloons) first appeared c. WW1. This is the Kettering Bug, contemporarily described as an “aerial torpedo” and currently likened to both cruise missiles and drones. It was first flight-tested on October 2nd, 1918 (it crashed), but was never used in combat. See also the Navy’s Sperry Aerial Torpedo, Siemens Torpedo Glider, and Royal Flying Corps’ Aerial Target.

The Way It Worked

As you might expect, the entire system was predicated on a swap. You removed the host rifle’s bolt carrier group and installed Atchisson’s self-contained assembly. Said assembly consisted of the chamber adapter, guide rails, a blowback-operated bolt, recoil system, and a receiver-end support structure. It also had a select-fire version that engaged the rifle’s automatic sear.

The temporarily converted rifle continued its previous closed-bolt operation, utilizing a blowback rimfire system housed within the host rifle’s upper receiver.

What’s the Significance?

If you’re reading this, you probably already know. Replacing the standard BCG with a rimfire conversion assembly allowed shooters to train at a lower cost, with lower recoil, without sacrificing the familiarity of the host rifle’s manual of arms.

The efficacy and wisdom of that is still debated, but that’s not what we’re here for.

What can’t be debated is the system’s enduring influence. The Atchisson-pattern AR .22 LR conversion system was the foundational design that informed virtually every .22 LR conversion kit we’ve seen since. It has evolved, in some cases been improved (in others, treated very badly) and spawned numerous variants over the years, but the fundamental design remains obvious nearly half a century later.

Which is great for plinkers, companies like CMMG, and many, many wallets.

Also on this date: this guy made his world debut. If you don’t know his significance to the world of weapons, warfare, equipment, logistics, and technology, you’re probably reading the wrong website. Or you’re a dirty commie. Happy birthday! I hope you enjoy another Old Fashioned today. Or several.

This was a pretty simple overview. If you’d like to learn more, check Frank Iannamico’s article on Small Arms Review, this one by J.M. Ramos on the same site, or this one at Rimfire World. Today in Guns is a desultory series that appears whenever the author gets around to writing an installment.

And that is what happened TODAY IN GUNS.
