CANSEC 18 – Solarshield

Thursday, May 31st, 2018

If you’ve ever been around military vehicles on the summer, you know how hot their exterior surfaces can get. Armored vehicles are even worse.

Rheinmetall Defence’s Solar Sigma Shield is a blanket-like appliqué. It is designed to not only reduce the effects of solar heat in vehicles, but also provide multispectral camouflage. It is also fire resistant and no-slip/no-skid, another major plus for operating on armor vehicles.

Testing by Defence Research and Development Canada Show up to a 30% lower temperature when using Solarshield.

In this case, it is mounted to a Tactical Armored Patrol Vehicle from Textron Systems, currently in service with the Canadian Army.

Gerber Introduces New Limited Edition G1-002 At 2018 Blade Show

Thursday, May 31st, 2018

PORTLAND, OREGON (May 31st, 2018)Gerber, a leading manufacturer of knives, tools, and equipment will introduce the latest edition of the G1 Series of custom knives, the G1-002, at the 2018 Blade Show in Atlanta, Georgia. An industry pioneer, Gerber has been crafting world-class knives and tools for decades and first introduced the G1 Series in 2017 to showcase the craftsmanship, design, and skill that are ongoing components of the brand’s robust American manufacturing.

Each year, Gerber plans to introduce a new addition to the G1 portfolio that will showcase elevated materials, processes, and technologies. The series serves to fuel the future development of production-caliber products, serving a large market of both professional and recreational users. As the second edition in the G1 Series, the G1-002 pays homage to a Gerber legend: the Mark II combat knife. The G1-002 is a distinct combination of premium materials and processes, buttressed by collaborations with two innovators in the knifemaking and shooting industry: Zev Technologies and Blackpoint Tactical.

“The G1-002 is not only a re-make of the heralded Mark II, it’s an overhaul. Wielding an S60V blade, a custom-machined handle from Zev Technologies, and a multi-mount Kydex® sheath from Blackpoint Tactical, the G1-002 is both a functional tool and a collector’s item” says Karrson Koivisto, Product Manager at Gerber. “First introduced in 1966, the Mark II is recognized as the benchmark for combat knives and stands as a piece of battlefield and knifemaking history.”

At the Portland, Oregon headquarters, Gerber engineers provided insightful design, informed engineering, precise machining, and first-class execution to bring the G1-002 to life. The team then turned to Zev Technologies – An innovator in high-quality firearm components for pistol, rifle and AR platforms – for a uniquely functional custom-machined handle with Cerakote® coating. Blackpoint Tactical was recruited to build a custom Kydex® sheath fitting of an undeniably legendary blade.

All aspects of the G1-002 were meticulously considered, sourcing first-class materials and leveraging both the master craftsmanship of Gerber’s manufacturing facility as well as the expertise of two premium partners. Proudly designed and made in the USA, each of the 100 hand-built G1-002 knives underwent a laborious multi-stage process, accumulating dozens of hours in production, processing, and assembly. Each knife is hand assembled, double inspected, and serialized for collection.

The ultra-premium S60V blade is the foundation of the G1-002. Gerber finished the spear-point blade with a highly polished and full fine edge, presenting a marked departure from the original Mark II’s blade. Zev Technologies applied a machining pattern inspired by their renowned stippling, typically applied to Glock pistols – resulting in a unique aesthetic and supreme grip. Blackpoint Tactical heeded the call for a custom Kydex® sheath with vertical or horizontal belt carry options and boasts click-in retention.

Visit the Gerber booth at the 2018 Blade Show to purchase the G1-002, a limited number will be for sale on site. It will also be available for purchase directly on Gerber’s website – retail price for the G1-002 is $400.00.

Proceeds will benefit the Special Operations Care Fund [SOC-F] which provides medical, financial, and other support to SOF members and their families in ways that are often not met through other sources.

The G1-002 has also been nominated for a “Knife Collaboration of The Year” award at the 2018 Blade Show.

Widget Wednesday – DeWalt Battery Adapters

Wednesday, May 30th, 2018

Many SOF elements deploy on foreign missions for an indefinite period of time in austere environments. The need to be self-sufficient also often includes having to build the infrastructure they need to for accommodation, training, and operations. To get this job done, commercially available power tools are in common use.

Commercial power tools are also necessary for the maintenance of Indigenously Owned Vehicles (IOV), Non-Tactical Vehicles (NTV), and Non-Standard Tactical Vehicles (NSTV) as well and are a ‘must have’ on any extended operations with such vehicles.

Finally, much of the specialized equipment used by forces with specific, unique mission sets such as breaching, demolition, and EOD uses commercial power tool batteries as well.

E4C72698-6C73-44AA-80F7-D6920C05A1A9

Until now, the ability to keep these batteries charged in environments with unreliable or non-existent AC power infrastructure has been a significant challenge – to say nothing of the extra space and weight taken up with their special wall charger units.

Thanks to our recently developed DeWalt Tool Battery Adapters for the SPM-622 Squad Power Manager, units can now keep all of their batteries charged up no matter how austere the AO. Our SPM + DeWalt Adapter combinations also enable units to get double-duty of their DeWalt batteries by using them as a power source for their other gear as well.

A3F11F49-ACB6-45D4-BBF3-243493F9FD8C

DeWalt Batteries currently supported by the SPM include the 14.4V, 18V, and now the 20V – with the slide-on Adapter as well. DeWalt Tool Battery Adapter’s for the ABC-812 Adaptive Battery Charger are also in development and will be released soon.

SOFIC 18 – Franklin Armory BFSIII TR-4 Trigger

Friday, May 25th, 2018

Franklin Armory debuted the TR-4 trigger at SOFIC 2018. This is the newest trigger to employ the patented BFSIII technology.  The TR-4 is a Military and Law Enforcement specific trigger that is designed to operate with a full auto sear trip.  It allows 4 selectable positions; Safe, Semi, Binary, and Full Auto.

The TR-4 gives Military and Law Enforcement agencies a more accurate, effective, and reliable trigger system that can drop into their existing platforms.  Of course, the Binary mode provides significantly reduced split times between rounds, allowing for tighter double tap groups.  In addition, the TR-4 incorporates the patented safety features designed into the original civilian BFSIII trigger.

The new design is easy for departments to transition to since safe, semi, and full auto are found in their traditional locations.  Binary mode is found by moving the selector so that it is pointing down.  This is a tremendous benefit to sworn personnel as it allows them to choose between two operating modes, semi, and Binary, with one flick of the switch.

The TR-4 also marks the first time that a pull release trigger has been employed with a machine gun sear trip.  By utilizing this function in Binary mode, reliability has been guaranteed.
