Equivital’s Campaign to End Avoidable Heat Stress Injuries and Fatalities

Wednesday, September 6th, 2017

As militaries worldwide struggle with soldiers suffering from heat stress – due to increased training pressures and heavier kit – Equivital looks to combat these injuries and fatalities by designing wearable technology that can save soldier’s lives.

Equivital’s Black Ghost system provides valuable information to commanders and medics on a soldier’s temperature, heart rate, breathing rate, position and activity. The Black Ghost application also now includes a novel Heat Strain Index (HSI). HSI is the ultimate tool in estimating current heat strain and predicting an impending heat related injury. Alerts and thresholds can be tailored to each user and the data allows commanders to intervene in a timely manner when a threshold is breached.

Not only does the Equivital system provide a current estimation of heat strain, it also has the functionality to predict 15 minutes in the future the heat risk related to an individual if they were to continue in the same environment at the same activity level. This information could be vital in preventing heat stress injuries in military units worldwide.

Anmol Sood, CEO of Equivital, comments: “Heat stress can impair a person’s cognitive function and this is dangerous for those operating in extreme and unpredictable environments. The Black Ghost system is designed to provide supporting data to a team leader or medic and reduce the burden on the individual. The Heat Strain Index empowers individuals and teams for better decision making backed up by contextualised data. Black Ghost enables commanders to provide smarter, safer training and ultimately to save lives.”

Equivital is launching V5 of its Black Ghost system at DSEI 2017, at stand S3-357. The new version brings unparalleled accessibility, new functionality and improved usability, having taken on detailed feedback from multiple military partners. The new system will enable commanders to make informed decisions, faster, with relevant data at their fingertips, on a mobile device or PC.

BCB Launches FireDragon – Solid Bio-Ethanol Fuel Made From Sugar Beets To Heat Rations

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017

Visitors to the world’s leading Defence and Security Trade event, DSEI, (12-15 Sep 2017, ExCel, London) will be able to see for themselves a new fuel made from sugar beet which British soldiers are now using to heat their combat rations and warm their drinks.

163 year old Cardiff-based survival equipment manufacturers, BCB International Ltd, have developed the world’s first solid bio-ethanol fuel called ‘FireDragon’. Following extensive laboratory and field trials, the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) decided to replace traditional hexamine fuel tablets with the novel ‘FireDragon’ fuel which is made in Great Britain.

BCB International’s Managing Director, Andrew Howell, said: “Warm food raises a soldier’s morale, energy and concentration levels. Unfortunately, for far too long soldiers were also unknowingly inhaling toxic fumes each time they used hexamine fuel tablets to cook their food in the field.

“FireDragon is a safer and cleaner alternative. The FireDragon fuel boasts many features. It is made from sustainable natural ingredients, it is non-toxic, burns cleanly, can be ignited even when wet and if necessary can be used as a hand cleanser.”

Many Armies worldwide are still issuing their soldiers with hexamine fuel tablets. But as Andrew Howell explained, the British Army’s decision to make the switch to ‘FireDragon’ has encouraged other Armies to rethink their military rations heating fuel: “There is a growing body of evidence about the health risks associated with hexamine based fire-lighting fuels. This combined with the UK MoD’s decision to use a superior alternative, has led to those in charge of combat feeding programmes in other armies to reconsider hexamine’s suitability as a fuel for the future.

“We are currently in discussions with several armies that are interested in integrating ‘FireDragon’ into their operational ration packs.”

The fuel is supplied with a small lightweight cooker which can be packed with three ‘FireDragon’ fuel blocks.

BCB International will exhibit the ‘FireDragon’ fuel on its stand (N5-200).

IPS & REI Exhibiting Full Range of Electronic Detection Equipment at DSEI 17

Thursday, August 31st, 2017

IPS (International Procurement Services) & REI (Research Electronics Internaitonal) will be exhibiting their full range of electronic detection equipment at DSEI ExCel London, 12-15 September 2017

Among the range on show, will be the newly launched ORION 900 HX and ORION HX Deluxe Non-Linear Junction Detectors and the new TALAN 3 Telephone and Line Analyzer.

The new ORION 900 HX NLJD uses lower frequency to detect electronic semi-conductor components through dense materials such as bricks, concrete and soil. The longer 900 MHz wavelength enables it to detect older, less refined circuitry, to detect and locate hidden cameras, microphones, and other electronic devices regardless of whether the surveillance device is radiating, hard wired, or turned off.

Whereas the ORION 2.4 HX NLJD has a shorter wavelength of 2.4GHz, is better at detecting modern, surface-mounted circuitry and electronic semi-conductor components within normal office environments.

The ORION HX Deluxe NLJD has interchangeable 2.4GHz / 900 MHz antenna heads which are easily exchanged. The touch screen controller, automatically recognises which antenna is being used and displays the corresponding data. The Deluxe sweeps both small, modern circuitry in office environments, and older, less refined circuitry through dense materials.

The new TALAN 3.0 Telephone and Line Analyzer has enhanced VoIP traffic analysis on phones and networks, patent pending FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) algorithm for visual display of VoIP traffic, earth/ground testing for modified connections to extraneous wiring and an advanced input panel to accept and test shielded ethernet cables.

The TALAN 3.0 analyses digital, analogue and VoIP phone systems and wiring for faults, anomalies and security risks using a suite of telephone tests including an automatic switching matrix. By capturing and analysing the network stream for fast identification of unauthorised VoIP traffic it can quickly detect if a VoIP phone system is passing data packets even when the phone is not in use.

The easy-to-use interface allows users to visually observe patterns of consistent, repetitive traffic. Common VoIP services will often display a unique set of characteristics that can later be used to visually identify similar sets of traffic. Extensive, advanced filtering makes it easier to locate and identify suspicious packet information.
