Drone Evolution Launches Unjammable Drone Technology At DSEI 2019

Tuesday, September 10th, 2019

London, 11th September, 2019: Drone Evolution launches its new patented rotary UAV protection technology at DSEI 2019. Named SafeFlight, the system protects delivery drones from being jammed and its titanium shell protects it from a variety of external forces.

Using a range of navigation systems, SafeFlight can switch between them if it comes under attack, meaning that it can always stay on course for its destination. The titanium shell ensures it remains lightweight but impervious to small arms fire and laser attacks. Anti-jamming systems in the motors mean that they also remain resilient to electronic interference.

Toby Townrow, Communications Director at Drone Evolution, said: “We’re really excited to start telling the world about SafeFlight. Development of SafeFlight technology means that the nascent drone delivery industry can protect the public, the assets and the integrity of the industry itself, knowing that delivered items will always reach their destination however much bad actors may want to interfere with it.

“We are delighted to take Drone Evolution to its next level both in business and technology. I am particularly looking forward to launching this concept at DSEI 2019. This could be a game-changer for drone deliveries, one that could help to see them finally become a reality in both military and civilian life.”

Revision Awarded Contract By Dutch Ministry Of Defence To Deliver Next Generation Helmet System

Monday, September 9th, 2019

Montreal, Quebec (September 9, 2019) – Revision—the world leader in innovative head protection systems and soldier solutions—has been selected by the Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD) to supply Batlskin Viper® P6N helmet systems for Dutch Military Forces. The contract for delivery of approximately 48,800 combat helmets was awarded on a full and open competition basis to Revision. Additionally, a 15-year maintenance and support agreement was established, with an estimated completion date of 2034. The bespoke helmet system, developed to the Dutch MoD’s rigorous performance standards and weight requirements, represents the first major advancement in helmet technology for Dutch Military Forces in over 20 years.

“We are extremely proud of the helmet suite that we developed for the Dutch MoD,” said Jonathan Blanshay, CEO, Revision. “Our experienced team of engineers and designers worked with the latest materials to build a user-centric system that offers better protection, optimized fit, reduced weight, and enhanced integration options. Combined, these features ultimately lead to improved operational effectiveness for the soldier. The Dutch MoD’s move to Revision’s Viper P6N system follows the trend started by Denmark and the United Kingdom to upgrade their programs to Revision’s next generation helmets and we expect other NATO countries will follow suit. Our continued investment in cutting-edge materials and efficient, high-volume manufacturing processes cement Revision’s position to meet the growing global demand for customized advanced military helmet systems.”

“The current version [Dutch helmet] dates from the early 1990s and is in urgent need of replacement,” said the Dutch project lead quoted in DMO Magazine, Materieel Gezien (volume 06, 2019). “The helmet from Revision Military was the best in the tests. Among other things, the helmets received the highest rating from the users in the test group.”

The Viper P6N helmet was developed to the exacting standards set by the Dutch MoD, and was selected in part after extensive user trials – proving that Revision’s helmets are chosen by end-users due to comfort, integration and weight. The Viper P6N helmet shell utilized advanced materials (including Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene – UHMWPE) and processes to exceed high protection standards in a lightweight, adaptable and comfortable system. More than 55,000 helmet covers in the new Dutch camouflage, “Netherlands Fractal Pattern” will be supplied in green, tan and white, and all systems will include Revision’s best-in-class APEX Liner system that is infinitely customizable for ultimate comfort and impact protection. Additional accessories include lightweight skeletonized accessory rails and the Wilcox® L4 Shroud. Revision will begin delivering helmet systems to the Dutch MoD later this year.

Canadian Army – Uniform, Camouflage and Equipment Modernization Process Marches On

Wednesday, September 4th, 2019

Ottawa, Ontario — Some 600 soldiers at 4th Canadian Division Support Base (4 CDSB) Petawawa will soon be standing out as they help the Canadian Armed Forces test a new Canadian Disruption Pattern (CADPAT) to help select a replacement camouflage for the current iconic woodland and arid CADPAT patterns.

The original distinctive CADPAT, revolutionary for its time, was initially developed in 1997. It is most closely associated with the Canadian Army but it is also worn by Navy and Air Force personnel when they work within Army lines.

Canadian Special Operations Forces personnel wear another pattern, MultiCam, which is not being replaced.

Since CADPAT was issued, there have been a number of advances made in camouflage research, specifically protection from detection by infra-red and other night vision systems.

Starting at the end of September 2019, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment will begin wearing coats and trousers, shell fragmentation protective body armor, bush caps, helmet covers and rank patches in the “Prototype J” mid-spectrum pattern.

This new four-colour pattern falls in the middle of the camouflage spectrum, not overly emphasizing brown or green tones.

While there have been over a dozen patterns tested, this is the first pattern to be taken out of a lab and tested using real soldiers, who are undergoing rigorous training for overseas operations. There will likely be adjustments made to the pattern resulting from this trial.

The trial will last until July 2020. During this time, the Human Factors Support Cell from the Soldier Systems Directorate within Director General Land Equipment Program Management will seek user feedback about the “Prototype J” pattern by conducting large-scale questionnaires.

The team will also conduct data collection, focus groups, and 3D body scanning to define how the current operational uniform and personal equipment can be improved.

This study will also include seeking out soldiers of smaller stature, including but not exclusively women, to ensure that the next generation of clothing and equipment fit the widest variety of soldiers possible.

The Soldier Operational Clothing and Equipment Modernization (SOCEM) project, led by the Canadian Army Director of Land Requirements, in cooperation with Assistant Deputy Minister (Materiel) and Defence Research and Development Canada, has been working for over two years on harnessing technological advances to improve the functionality of Canadian Armed Forces operational uniforms and equipment.

The goal is operational clothing and equipment that protect and fit better while lightening the load carried by soldiers.

Transitioning to a single pattern from the current temperate woodland (green), and arid (tan) will also create efficiencies in terms of logistics.

With the final decision expected no later than 2022 and a full roll out 2027, the interim years will see mixed uniforms and equipment as items in the new pattern are gradually acquired and put into service.
