Los Angeles Sheriffs Dept Deploys 7,500 of SOTech’s First Responder Face Cover

Monday, April 20th, 2020

After a 3-week crash development of their new First Responder Face Cover, SOTech has delivered 7,500 face covers to the LASD, multiple US military units, numerous smaller police departments, and other first responder organizations across the United States.  After offering their Gen 1 mask, SOTech was approached by local law enforcement personnel with decades of experience in development for what turned into all hours sampling, field testing, concept meetings, and material searches.  The only bright side was the near empty LA freeways that facilitated the meetings.  The final model was presented to the LASD and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Relief Fund purchased 7,500 units which were made in 3 days and deployed with clockwork efficiency.

What’s unique in this design is the ripstop cotton cover that comes loaded with washable reusable non-woven liners.  This forms a durable mask that can be worn comfortably throughout a shift and is expected to last the duration of the pandemic response with washing and rotating of liners. The most complimented feature of the mask are the long elastic head straps tightened by cord locks. And as part of the strategic goal of the program, SOTech has partnered with a group that is bringing in an N-95 mask machine to produce filters that can insert into this mask.  Additionally, the cover in its current configuration can fit over most N-95 rated masks, providing an abrasion barrier that can extend the lifespan of the government issued N-95s.  SOTech is also working with a group that is working on mask sterilization technology.

The final advantage is its simplicity and its resultant low cost.  At $6 agency price, this is a product designed so that organziations under stress can afford to equip their entire staff, and officers can buy from the website, www.SpecOpsTech.com, to equip their families.

SOTech is manufacturing these First Responder Face Covers as face masks under current FDA guidelines, and they should not be used in surgical environments.

In the midst of the marathon product development project, SOTech staff also proudly produced masks donated to local hospitals and elderly veterans.  To learn the story, check out:  www.dailynews.com/2020/04/19/how-three-batttle-tested-veterans-declared-war-on-the-coronavirus/amp

Flying Cross Offers Largest In-Stock Inventory of Uniform Garments for Public Safety

Wednesday, April 8th, 2020

COVID-19 outbreak causes agencies across the nation to reconsider uniform needs Cincinnati, Ohio – Flying Cross, a leader in the design and manufacturer of public safety apparel and gear, announced today an overwhelming support from the law enforcement community to help identify uniform solutions that are readily available to service and ship during this recent Coronavirus outbreak. Many public safety uniform needs have changed as officers have had to shift roles to fill department requirements, as well as change personal hygiene and uniform care habits to protect themselves in the field.

“This is a critical time for all of our frontline first responders working in our communities during this Coronavirus outbreak,” said Tom Rose, GM of Public Safety, Fechheimer Brothers Company. “Their care and safety is, and has always been, our number one concern, in conjunction with their local dealers servicing their uniform needs. We are fortunate to have the industry’s largest in-stock inventory to be able to step up in a big way to help identify the products our customers need – and need right now.”

Flying Cross carries more than $38 million of product inventory and uniform solutions for law enforcement, fire and EMS, mass transportation, the U.S. postal, and many other adjacent industries. Because they stock many uniform programs both wide and deep, many agencies have reached out directly and through their distributors for help with current and immediate uniform needs.

“Many of the first responder roles are considered “essential” amidst state issued stay-at-home orders,” said Rose. “Roles that previously did not operate in the field on a daily basis now require daily duty uniforms to help fill gaps for the department. All of these roles have a greater risk of exposure on a day-to-day basis.”

Cleaning methods and frequency have also added to the need for uniform solutions. Many departments are choosing to purchase uniforms that provide the clean, crisp appearance expected by the community, but with easier maintenance and long term durability such as Cross FX and Cross FX Elite. Despite the uniform program, the vast exposure of COVID-19 to officers in the field has generated new habits. Possible exposures have led to officers changing their uniform garments more frequently throughout the day. Uniform garments that once were acceptable to clean once a week now may need to be cleaned daily to minimize the spread of any possible contamination on clothes. When it comes to possibly contaminated clothes, the CDC has recommended using gloves to handle the garments and washing them right away. Garments should be cleaned based on the uniform fabric.

With travel limited in many states, and many organizations choosing not to receive visitors, Flying Cross has converted its sales team and extended customer service to help field customer questions and inquiries.

To inquire about uniform needs for your agency or department call 1-800-543-1939, or visit flyingcross.com/ready-to-serve.

Comp-Tac Products Receive NTOA Recommendations

Wednesday, February 26th, 2020

HOUSTON, Feb. 25, 2020 – Comp-Tac Victory Gear® recently received three product recommendations in the National Tactical Officers Association’s “Member Tested and Recommended” program.

Select law enforcement officers thoroughly tested the Kydex® Tourniquet TACO® (4.74), Kydex Handcuff TACO (4.45), and the Warrior Holster (4.46) and rated them in the MTR’s two highest tiers. Each product was evaluated by four officers and graded on a variety of categories, including design, performance, quality, durability and versatility, with each group of officers’ scores averaged into the ratings listed above.

The MTR program ranks products as “standard” (rating from 3.00 to 3.99), “silver” (from 4.00 to 4.49) and “gold” (from 4.50 to 5.00). NTOA members can view the full reviews and scores in the Member Tested and Recommended database.

“To start off, I have to say that I love the Handcuff TACO Kydex Pouch. I honestly can’t say enough good things about this,” stated one officer who gave the Kydex Handcuff TACO a perfect 5.00 rating. “First, I love the fact that it has the hard Kydex shell, which allows me to easily place and remove my handcuffs with ease and not have to fumble with them. Anyone who has had to handcuff someone when they are actively resisting by themselves knows that being able to use one hand, pull your handcuffs easily, and quickly is a huge benefit. I choose to not use the safety snap over the top and my handcuffs and they have yet to break loose from the pouch unintended. I have used Smith and Wesson, and Peerless brand handcuffs in the pouch with no issues. The pouch also mounts to any platform you want making it easy to switch from duty belt, vest, or even your bag. I trust using this every day and so far I have yet to find anything wrong with this.”

“I generally do not find Kydex holsters comfortable due to them not flexing, but this one is designed to be more narrow with the belt loops more underneath it instead of on the side. It is much more comfortable to wear than any other Kydex holster if have used,” said another officer who rated the Warrior an overall 4.83. “The gun fits in it perfectly and draws well from it. It rides in a neutral position and is fairly concealable. It rides snugly and is very comfortable. It held up well to impact testing by hitting into walls with it. Overall this is a well-made product and comfortable to wear.”

Every Comp-Tac product submitted to the MTR for review not only passed for recommendation but also ranked highly. Additionally, HSGI®, the parent company of Comp-Tac, also received several product recommendations from the MTR program, which were recently announced.

“We’re very excited that these officers responded so positively to our products,” said Randi Rogers, Comp-Tac director of brand management. “We pride ourselves on making gear you can rely on and it is so rewarding to hear that our men and women in uniform agree.”

Nevada Highway Patrol Transitions to SIG SAUER P320

Friday, February 21st, 2020

NEWINGTON, N.H., (February 21, 2020) – SIG SAUER, Inc. is proud to announce the Nevada Highway Patrol has transitioned to the SIG SAUER P320 9mm pistol as their official duty pistol. The Nevada Highway Patrol is a division of the Nevada Department of Public Safety responsible for law enforcement across the entire state of Nevada with over 480 sworn Troopers.

“Our initial transition to the SIG SAUER P320 has been seamless, and our Troopers are impressed with the accuracy and superior performance of the pistol,” said Colonel Daniel Solow, Nevada Highway Patrol. “Our diverse group of Troopers is going to appreciate the custom fit of their P320, and having the ability to choose a grip size based on their personal preference due to the unique modularity that the P320 is known for.”

The P320 pistol is a modular, striker-fired pistol, available in full-size, carry, compact, and subcompact sizing. The serialized trigger group makes the P320 adjustable to multiple calibers, size, and grip options. The P320 is available in 9mm, .357SIG, 40S&W, .45ACP, with a choice of contrast, or SIGLITE Night Sights, and is also available in XSERIES and RXP models that include upgraded features including an optics-cut slide. The intuitive 3-point takedown requires no trigger pull for disassembly, and safety features include a striker safety, disconnect safety, and optional manual safety.

“SIG SAUER is honored to continue our long-standing relationship with the Troopers of the Nevada Highway Patrol through their selection of the P320 as their official duty pistol,” began Tom Jankiewicz, Executive Vice president, Law Enforcement Sales, SIG SAUER, Inc. “We are proud of the positive feedback we have received during their transition to the P320, and with the inclusion of the optics-cut on their slides they have the ability to easily expand the pistols capabilities in the future with the addition of a red dot optic.”

Kentucky State Police Trooper Saved With Granted Tourniquet From Spirit of Blue

Wednesday, February 19th, 2020

FRANKFORT, KENTUCKY – February 17, 2020 – The Spirit of Blue Foundation is pleased to announce its first verified save of a law enforcement officer with equipment granted through its safety grant program. On June 11, 2019, Kentucky State Police Trooper Brad Martin was taking part in serving a warrant in Perry County, Kentucky when he was fired upon and struck in the thigh. Other troopers with him quickly got him to cover, applied a tourniquet and rushed him to a local medical center for treatment. The tourniquet, now part of each Kentucky State Police trooper’s uniform, had been issued to each trooper just months before as a result of the Spirit of Blue grant. Trooper Martin has made a full recovery and returned to duty weeks later, crediting his survival to his fellow troopers on the scene and the tourniquet that was applied.

The Combat Application Tourniquet from North American Rescue, carried in a RIGID Tourniquet Case with High Gloss finish from Eleven-10, was issued to every Trooper and Officer with Kentucky State Police in September 2018. The grant was made possible by sustaining sponsor Law Enforcement United, who has contributed to Spirit of Blue’s safety grant program since 2016.

Brenda Tiffany, mother of KSP Trooper Cameron Ponder who was lost in the line of duty in September 2015, advocated for the tourniquet grant and was instrumental in its being awarded.  “Since the day I lost my son, I have looked for ways to help protect his brothers in Gray,” commented Tiffany. “I had no idea how those efforts were going to impact someone so close to Cameron.”

Trooper Martin graduated with the Kentucky State Police Cadet Class 92 in January 2015 and was a roommate with Trooper Ponder during their time at the academy.  Out of that cadet class there have been two troopers lost in the line of duty – Trooper Eric Chrisman and Trooper Cameron Ponder. Trooper Martin was almost the third.

“On June 11, 2019 I was participating in a warrant service when I was shot in the left thigh.  By the grace of God, I am still here today,” shared Trooper Martin.  “The prompt application of the tourniquet and quick action by my fellow brothers played a major part in limiting the extent of my injury and my ability to recover.”

Trooper Dan Smoot assessed the wound while Trooper Josh Richardson applied the granted tourniquet.  Trooper Chad Daniels helped the other two carry Trooper Martin to the patrol car used to transport Martin to the Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Treatment Center.  The quick and professional action of these three troopers ensured Trooper Martin survived the encounter.

“This feels like the moment that we have all been working toward,” said Ryan T. Smith, Executive Director of the Spirit of Blue.  “We have one single mission, and that is to ensure officers have access to the safety equipment they need to protect themselves or survive a dangerous encounter.  To see this trooper’s life saved as a result of a piece of equipment we granted is overwhelming.”

Officer Down Memorial Page reported 135 law enforcement officers lost their lives in 2019.  On average, 150 officers are lost in the line of duty annually.  47 of those deaths were firearm related, which was the leading cause of officer deaths that year.  The reality of these statistics, and the increasing number of underfunded law enforcement agencies across the country, fuel the Spirit of Blue safety grant initiative.

The Spirit of Blue Foundation actively encourages the public at large to honor and appreciate law enforcement officers who serve and protect our communities. By supporting the Spirit of Blue Foundation, the public can make an impact in the lives of law enforcement officers every day.
