Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

Late yesterday, Outdoor Retailer and the Outdoor Industry Association announced that the Winter and Summer Market tradeshows will continue in Salt Lake City through 2016. For some time now there has been conjecture that they might move to a new venue but with this announcement, that is all laid to rest, at least for the next few years.

OR Follow – Up Arc’teryx Spring 13 – Pt 2

Thursday, August 9th, 2012

As if the hoody and pants we showed earlier today wasn’t enough, we thought you might like these as well.

I am a Big fan of hoodies and I can’t wait for the Witness Hoody which features a full length zipper opening.

In their product display, Arc’teryx paired the Witness with the Aristo Pant. As you can see it features an uber-articulated knee. Below is a little better look at the knee detail. It is somewhat reminiscent of the articulation found on the Drac/Sphinx/Talos minus the webbing reinforcement.

OR – Metolius

Sunday, August 5th, 2012

The left harness is called the Strike. It’s an unpadded one-size-fits all sit and chest harness combo, Berry compliant will all Safe-tech features. This means every structural feature of all of their harnesses are full strength, ie gear loops, haul loop, and bungee webbing in back.

The harness on the right is the Patriot. It’s a lightly padded tactical climber/assault harness in 499 Tan. Additionally, helo gunners like this harness because they don’t have to worry about where they clip in. It’s a slightly lower profile design than traditional harnesses so that it won’t get in the way of other mission equipment.

The new Bravo Wire Gate carabiner was developed on the heels of the Bravo Key Lock. Boasting a 24 kN rating, it’s a lightweight wire gate carabiner in all Black. It’s also available in a lightweight quick draw option.

The green biner is called the Gate Keeper. It’s a locking carabiner for belaying. The additional wire gate keeps the biner oriented in the proper belaying position to avoid cross loading.

OR – Sierra Designs

Saturday, August 4th, 2012

It’s common knowledge that down is a great insulator but that it loses it’s insulative properties when wet. About 18 months ago Sierra Designs began investigating technologies that would help down to continue to perform even in wet conditions.

Ultimately, after rigorous testing, they chose a treatment called DriDown. But, before that could happen, one of the challenges that Sierra Designs had to surmount was the development of testing protocols to ensure consistent performance measures regardless of down treatment. They’ve offered them up to industry and are open to investigating other methods as well.

20120804-164810.jpg

This example is of a shake test. At this point the samples have had 349 shakes. The example on the left is DriDown, the middle a competitor and the right untreated down. By the way, DriDown shakes out wet at 3725 shakes on average.

DriDown is a polymeric treatment. This means that it will take longer (10x) before you need to take shelter before your down becomes unviable. It will also dry 33% faster than untreated down. This could very well translate to insensible perspiration as well.

It looks to be a very promising technology and I look forward to hearing about how it performs in the field.

OR – Jetboil

Saturday, August 4th, 2012

Many of you may be familiar with the Jetboil line of portable cooking systems. They have just introduced a new version of the popular Flash stove with a genuine MultiCam neoprene cozy that goes around the vessel. Additionally, the shroud that houses the burner base is an OD color that matches the MultiCam quite well. The burner incorporates a piezo igniter. Finally, Jetboil pioneered the use the FluxRing, a heat exchanger technology that looks like a series of fins. It doubles the fuel efficiency of the Jetboil stove because it heats up so quickly. It also cools more quickly than other stoves as well.

Weighing in at 14oz (without fuel), the entire kit and caboodle stores inside the vessel for transport.
