Qore Performance Wins Innovation Challenge Award

Sterling, VA – On 4 May, the Loudoun County Economic Development Authority awarded Qore Performance a $25,000 grant as runners up in the inaugural Loudoun Innovation Challenge. From an initial pool of 71 applicants, the Loudoun County Economic Development Authority selected Qore Performance as one of eight finalists. The final phase of the competition included a presentation to the Innovation Challenge board.

In their presentation, Qore Performance highlighted their IceAge Ecosystem, a holistic answer to eliminate environmental constraints on performance in humans and technology. Key components of the system are the IcePlate Curve, a freezable water bottle in the ergonomic shape of an ESAPI plate; IceVents, hydrophobic vented pads; ICE (IcePlate Carrier Exoskeleton), a plate carrier that natively integrates the IceAge Ecosystem in an industry-leading lightweight design; and IceCase, a durable, lightweight cooling and heating solution for using Apple’s iPad in extreme heat or cold conditions.

Qore Performance also highlighted their ties to Loudoun County, Virginia, after recently establishing their headquarters in Sterling. The new headquarters in Sterling is opening soon to the public as conditions and local policies allow. It will be an interactive showroom where visitors will get to experience the physiological benefits of the IceAge Ecosystem in person.

Other finalists in the Innovation Challenge included companies focused on medical technology and AI solutions for businesses. The F3400D/F4400D is either a UHF/VHF 5 watt radio that will handle messaging, PLI and more. The F7010 radio is our P25 radio (smallest P25 radio on the market) that will also do PLI and messaging. The SAT100, connected to the Iridium® satellite network, will also plug into ATAK allowing for PLI to show up on the map. The Dark Wolf Ventures back haul device will allow the PLI from the UHF/VHF radios to be back hauled to other locations in the world as long as you have the SAT100 connected via the Dark Wolf Ventures device, and cable and a connection with Iridium®. An Android tablet or phone can either be either connected via Bluetooth® or a new smart PTT that was developed in conjunction with DEM manufacturing (currently the SAT100 must be Bluetooth® only). This product will work either as a plug into ATAK (Mil or CIV version). You can also use Icom’s own stand-alone App called MMRIS developed in conjunction with Kopis Mobile. We are excited about our new ATAK plug-in product line. We plan to continue to add to this product line moving forward as our next update will be messaging and PLI over the P25 network, SAT100M (new mobile SAT PTT) as well as a new window 10 App. Something to look forward to coming out this fall.

Streamlight Upgrades Lumens of Popular TLR Models

TLR-1 HL, TLR-2 HL, TLR-2 HL G, and TLR-1 HPL Now Offer 1,000 Lumens

Streamlight Inc., a leading provider of high-performance lighting devices, announced it has improved the output of four of its TLR® high lumen (HL) gun-mounted lights, including the TLR-1 HL®; the TLR-2 HL®; the TLR-2 HL® G, and the TLR-1 HPL®. Each model now delivers 1,000 lumens of blinding white light.

“Tactical users and outdoor enthusiasts alike will appreciate the increased brightness of these rugged, yet compact and lightweight TLR models,” said Streamlight President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Sharrah. “The TLR-1 HL®, TLR-2 HL® and TLR-2 HL® G are designed to provide full situational awareness, offering a wide beam pattern that is similar to a floodlight for a variety of tactical maneuvers such as clearing a dark room, searching alleys, or other outdoor uses. The high performance TLR-1 HPL® also functions as a high lumen light, while delivering a brighter hotspot which puts more light on a target at a distance.”

In addition to their enhanced lumen capability, the TLR-1 HL®, TLR-2 HL®, and TLR-2 HL® G also now offer 20,000 candela and a 283-metre beam distance, while the TLR-1 HPL® provides 60,000 candela and a 490-metre beam distance. Each light has a continuous run time of 1.5 hours. The TLR-2 HL® also is equipped with a 640-660 nanometre integrated red aiming laser for long-range targeting, while the TLR-2 HL® G features a 510-530 nanometre green aiming laser to improve focusing on targets, particularly in daylight.

The upgraded lights feature the latest in LED technology, including a shock-proof high-power LED. All four models also feature strobing capability, offering the added benefit of being able to signal in the field or disorient targets. The enhanced TLR models can be quickly and safely attached to most weapons, without the need for users to put their hands in front of the muzzle. They mount directly to all MIL-STD-1913 (Picatinny) rails and handguns with Glock-style rails, and offer highly accurate sight repeatability when remounting. A key kit with six interchangeable keys is included to securely fit each light to the broadest array of rails. All of the models are fabricated from 6000 series machined aluminum, feature impact-resistant construction and have been extensively live-fired tested. They each use two included 3-volt, CR123A lithium batteries.

The TLR-1 HL® weighs 122.5 grams with batteries, while the TLR-2 HL® and the TLR-2 HL® G both weigh 138.3 grams with batteries; all three lights measure 8.6cm in length. The TLR-1 HPL® weighs 158.8 – 167.3 grams and measures 12.2 – 13.3cm with batteries, using a standard or remote switch, respectively.

The TLR-1 HL® and TLR-1 HPL® are IPX7 rated for waterproof operation to 1 metre for 30 minutes, while the TLR-2 HL® and TLR-2 HL® G offer an IPX4 rated design for water-resistant operation.

The TLR-1 HL®, TLR-2 HL®, TLR-2 HL® G, and TLR-1 each comes with Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

BAE Systems Selects Kongsberg’s MCT-30 Turret for U.S. Marine Corps ACV Program

May 13, 2020 – Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS (Kongsberg) has been selected by BAE Systems, Inc. to design and manufacture the remote Medium Caliber Turret (MCT) for the United States Marine Corps’ Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV) -30 program. Kongsberg will deliver up to 150 MCTs in a phased program as part of this contract. Test article delivery will commence early 2021 followed by production phases.

The Kongsberg MCT-30 is the first remotely operated 30mm turret to be qualified and fielded in the United States. The system provides highly accurate firepower for wheeled or tracked combat vehicles. It is remotely controlled and operated from a protected position inside the vehicle compartment for optimized crew safety.

The MCT-30 leverages a link-less medium caliber cannon providing lethality, extremely high reliability and multi-user functions to the Marine Corps ACV and other platforms.

“The ACV-30 with Kongsberg’s MCT-30 turret signifies a powerful lethality capability for the Marine Corps, representative of a new era in U.S. amphibious operations,” said Pål E Bratlie, Executive Vice President Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.”

The U.S. Army, in 2015, chose Kongsberg’s MCT-30 to increase the lethality of the Stryker Brigade in Europe. The system has been fielded and operated with the Army as part of the European Deterrence Initiative since 2018.

It is the primary armament and fire control system for the Infantry Carrier Vehicle – Dragoon (ICV-D) Strykers. All MCT-30s, and any remote weapon stations, bound for U.S. customers are manufactured in the Kongsberg Johnstown, Penn. facility leveraging a U.S. supply base located in over 30 states.

A Quantum Leap in Force Protection – Rheinmetall Supplying Bundeswehr with Fuchs/Fox Armoured Transport Vehicles Configured for EOD Role

Unexploded ordnance, mines and improvised explosive devices pose a grave threat to troops deployed in harm’s way. The German Bundeswehr is currently taking delivery of a newly developed high-performance system for countering these threats. Specially configured for an EOD role, this new variant of the Fuchs/Fox 1A8 armoured transport vehicle – known as the KAI – represents a quantum leap in the German military’s ability to detect and identify unexploded ordnance and similar battlefield hazards. Thanks to its high-performance electronics and a precise, multi-jointed, versatile manipulator arm featuring state-of-the-art sensors, Bundeswehr bomb disposal experts will now be able to reconnoitre, mark, expose and identify suspicious objects from a safe distance. Delivery of these serially produced systems is already underway, and slated to be complete in 2020. The order is worth a figure in the mid-double-digit million-euro range.

The Fuchs/Fox KAI reinforces the Bundeswehr’s array of heavy-duty EOD vehicles, and is designed to investigate vulnerable points which the Route Clearance System – partially supplied by Rheinmetall as well – cannot reach. Furthermore, the KAI is intended to serve as a stand-alone system capable of operating without the Route Clearance System in a convoy support role.

The carrier vehicle for the KAI is the latest iteration of the 1A8 version of this tried-and-tested armoured transport vehicle. Extremely well protected from mine and IED blasts, it is equipped with advanced force protection elements and mine-resistant seats that the keep the crew’s feet safely off the floor of the hull. The most prominent feature of the Fuchs/Fox KAI is the aforementioned multi-jointed, high-precision manipulator arm, with a maximum operating reach of over ten metres and a load-carrying capacity of 400 kg. This enables EOD personnel operating in the Fuchs/Fox fighting compartment to investigate suspicious locations and to examine and identify ordnance and booby traps with great precision from a safe standoff.

Besides the basic tool, the manipulator can accommodate two other tools. One of these is a dual sensor, the 80-centimetre variant employed by the Route Clearance System. It can be used for investigating suspicious spots and determining whether ordnance has been buried there. In addition, there is also a tool camera. Mounted on a tilt-and-pan head, this device can optically examine hard-to-view places such as drainage pipes, the sides and undersides of bridges or locations behind walls in order for example to detect the presence of an explosive device. To enable visual reconnaissance, the system features high-performance optronic technology. An optronic wiping-and-washing system makes it possible to quickly clean the reconnaissance camera during an ongoing operation. This significantly boosts the system’s tactical flexibility.

Other core elements of the KAI are its water-air spade system, with a maximum operating pressure of 400 bar, and a ripper chisel. This enables the EOD crew to uncover suspicious objects which cannot be clearly identified. Marking can be done digitally either in the system by means of exact GPS coordinates, or with an optical marking device for the dismounted bomb disposal engineer.

Moreover, the manipulator arm can be mounted with a recovery system for removing persons from a danger zone.

Rheinmetall is the German military’s partner of choice for combat engineering equipment. Other products in this segment include a share in the already mentioned Route Clearance System, the Dachs/Badger Armoured Engineering Vehicle 2, the Keiler armoured mine-clearing vehicle, and multiple variants of the Fuchs/Fox armoured transport vehicle.
