Air Guard’s 104th Medical Group Trains on Medical Care, Combat Tactics

HARTFORD, Connecticut — Members of the 104th Medical Group attended a two-day Tactical Combat Casualty Care course through the Center for Education, Simulation & Innovation with Hartford HealthCare Sept. 18-19, 2021, in Hartford, Connecticut.

During the interactive event members were taught the goals of TCCC, which are to treat the casualties, prevent additional casualties, and complete the mission. They were also taught the three phases of TCCC; care under fire, tactical field care, and tactical evacuation care.

“TCCC is a new secretary of defense medical initiative that can be used by all members while deployed in theater or during home station emergencies,” said Staff Sgt. Mike Reynolds, 104MDG aerospace medical technician. “During this specific training, 104MDG members went through live action scenarios, hands on skills, and critical thinking situations to perfect their knowledge of combat related casualties.”

According to Rob Lanouette, Department Consultant for the Tactical Medical programs at CESI, good medicine can be bad tactics if you don’t do the right thing at the right time.

“The TCCC course is important in that it is designed to integrate medical care and tactics in a combat environment,” said Lanouette. “TCCC addresses those differences.”

Lanouette went on to describe the purpose of the three phases of care. During the care under fire phase, treatment is limited to suppression of hostile fire, moving the casualty to cover and controlling massive hemorrhaging.

Tactical Field Care is the care rendered to the casualty once the casualty and rescuer are no longer under effective fire. A more in-depth assessment and treatment are rendered.

Tactical Evacuation Care is the care that is rendered during transport by aircraft, vehicle or boat to a higher role of care. The care that was rendered in the Tactical Field Care is continued in this phase. More advanced care may be rendered as additional equipment may be carried by the evacuation unit.

Reynolds said mastering the three phases can play a critical role in saving lives.

“It is important for all military members to be trained in the basics of TCCC so if a situation ever occurs, life can be maintained until the next level of care can be accomplished,” said Reynolds. “This was a great training for the members who participated because it gave us a chance to perform under pressure and to really test our knowledge, not to mention the comradery that was felt throughout the training.”

On the second day of training, the 104MDG Airmen were required to participate in a final scenario. This scenario was a culmination of the TCCC objectives that were learned throughout the course and is designed to simulate an austere environment. Audio and visual devices, environmental conditions and physical activity were utilized to induce stress that is often found in those environments.

Lanouette, also a prior Marine who served as a paramedic for 28 years and state trooper for 21 years, said he was impressed with the work ethic and ability of the 104MDG members to complete the 16 hour course successfully.

“The 104th did a great job representing the Air Forces Medical Services mission by displaying their commitment to delivering trusted care,” said Lanouette. “As the coordinator of the final scenario, I had asked a lot from them. I may have taken some of them out of their comfort zone during this mentally and physically demanding final scenario. The 104th was able to meet the objectives of the course and should be proud of this accomplishment.”

CAKE AP Now on Duty in Africa “Electric Bush Bike Anti-Poaching”

The CAKE anti-poaching system, including the specifically engineered Kalk AP off-road bikes and “mobile solar panels-in the field charging power stations”, are now on duty in Africa.

CAKE, the Swedish electric motorbike manufacturer, has successfully delivered the first batch of electric anti-poaching bush bikes to Africa. The quiet and high performance Kalk AP motorbikes were delivered to rangers at the Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC) who are now beginning to use the bikes in their quest to increase the efficiency, to combat poaching.

Background

Poaching has had devastating consequences for wildlife in Africa and is one of the primary reasons that some species face the risk of extinction. Anti-poaching teams have used gas-powered dirt bikes for patrolling because they are considered the fastest and most agile vehicles in the bush. However, these bikes are loud and alert poachers from miles away with the sound of their engines. The next big issue is that fuel is being brought to the field by helicopters or trucks with severe consequences, in terms of pollution.

CAKE Presents a Solution

In collaboration with the Southern African Wildlife College, the team at CAKE developed a bike built for the unique challenges of driving in the African bush and the harsh environments it would encounter. The Kalk AP combines the proven off-road performance ability of the Kalk OR with a lightweight frame, sealed drivetrain, and more robust suspension. And since it’s almost silent it’s easier to move around without alerting poachers. 

A mobile solar charging station designed and produced by Goal Zero allows rangers to take the bikes deep into bush and operate far from the confines of both the electrical grid as well as traditional fuel supply lines.“It’s great to see that the first batch of Kalk APs has made it to Africa, ready to change the game when it comes to fighting poaching in the most threatened wildlife areas. With fast, quiet and solar-powered driven bikes, we increase our chances of countering poaching and can truly make an impact in the region. This is only the beginning, we will continue to ship bikes to the SAWC to strengthen their anti-poaching work”, says CAKE’s founder and CEO Stefan Ytterborn.

Progress

It´s a dynamic progress with the rangers of the Southern African Wildlife College using the bikes, sharing the pros and cons for constant design improvements and engine tuning until the bikes are optimized for the specific use. 

Even in these early stages as they get acquainted with the new machines, the rangers are lavishly praising the Kalk AP for its substantial advantages to the petrol-driven predecessors.

“The petrol bikes we’ve used previously have all been loud, heavy and expensive to keep running in these areas. The CAKE bikes are quiet, which makes it easier for us to approach poachers undetected. We hope this collaboration will result in more effective anti-poaching in our region and we are really excited to start using the bikes in the wild.” says Mfana Xaba, Anti-poaching Team Leader at the Southern African Wildlife College.

More bikes are on their way. Thanks to CAKE’s buy-one-give-one Limited-Edition Charity Bundle, more bikes will be donated to SAWC to help to save more animals from poaching.

Donation program

To further strengthen the anti-poaching work, CAKE has set up a Limited-Edition Charity Bundle, offering the first 50 customers the option to buy one Kalk AP at a charity price, while donating another Kalk AP to the Southern African Wildlife College. Included in the donation is the solar-powered charging station and solar cells from Goal Zero.

Kalk AP owners will be able to track their bike with continuous updates from the conservation areas, getting updates on the location of the donated bike as well as its performance. CAKE will also receive those notifications and share the ongoing achievements of the Kalk AP testing on regular basis in the newsfeed on the CAKE website. Additionally, CAKE and Goal Zero will donate their profit margins from the sales of the Kalk AP directly to the Southern African Wildlife College, adding financial firepower to the fight against poaching in conservation areas.

The Kalk Anti-Poaching Bike

AUSA 21 – Knight’s Armament Co

AUSA 21 – L3 Harris Next Generation Squad Weapon Fire Control

We were surprised to see a mock-up of the L3 Harris Next Generation Squad Weapon Fire Control candidate.

The NGSW-FC provides an integrated approach to targeting by combining range-finding capability, ballistic computation, and environmental sensors that increase the probability of accurate targeting while decreasing the time to engage a threat.

NGSW-FC is intended for use with the still under development Next Generation Squad Weapons and is currently in source selection with a program award coming soon. However, it can also be used with legacy weapon systems.

L3 Harris is teamed with Leupold and is competition for NGSW-FC with Vortex Optics.

AUSA 21 – GORE-TEX Stretch Technology

WL Gore and Assoc is exhibiting their new GORE-TEX Stretch Technology. As you can see from this photo, the jacket can be worn over the plate carrier because the material stretches. Additionally, it offers an adaptive fit that reduces air gaps and leads to a more optimized design with less bulk. This more tailored fit also increases breathability by 25%.
