Belleville – Exodus 451

Monday, May 9th, 2016

During last week’s Warrior West I got to check out a new hot weather boot from Belleville. The Exodus 451 incorporates Gore-Tex Extended Comfort Technology.

This new construction is radically different than what you are used to with Gore-Tex lined boots. In the past, they used a bootie shaped liner that was sewn into the boot. With Gore-Tex Extended Comfort Technology, the membrane is laminated directly to the boot’s outer material, mimicking the construction of outerwear. The result is a boot that is lighter, cooler to the foot in hot weather, and more breathable.

Initially, the Exodus 451 is offered in Black, but a Coyote version is on the way.

Suunto Traverse Alpha

Monday, May 9th, 2016

While it’s not exactly a ‘tactical’ watch, the Traverse Alpha from Suunto is right at home in the outdoors.

I prefer navigation watches that use both GPS/GLONASS and this one does. Other features include moon phase calendar, gunshot detection, sunrise alert, weather trend, and red backlight for nighttime use.

That gunshot detection feature is cool for the hunter. When a shot is detected by the Treverse Alpha is drops a pin on your route. When used in conjunction with movescount you can visualize your hunt on a topographic map. By recording the position of other events on your hunt and linking pictures and videos, you can produce a short movie of your hunt that you can share with others.

Tested to MIL STD 819G*, the Traverse Alpha features a knurled stainless steel bezel, water repellent nylon strap and scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass. Vibration alerts and a customizable, night vision goggle compatible red backlight help you stay unnoticed.

Available in Foliage and Stealth color variants.

Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

Saturday, May 7th, 2016

In nearly every single class I teach these days, I see problems with factory ammunition (defects). Five years ago they were uncommon, today they are common place. It’s a byproduct of the amount of ammo being produced and consumed by the shooting community in this day and age. A word to the wise would be to both check visually and chamber check any self defense handgun ammo you trust your life to regardless of the brand.

Be safe and have a good one – see you at the range.

Warrior West – Norotos Universal Shroud-Light

Friday, May 6th, 2016

This is an update to the Norotos Universal Shroud-Light, which offers integrated light.

There are two banks of LEDs which consists of four White LEDs, two Red LEDs and two IR emitters. The user can choose between each color and IR as well as intensity from 4% to 100%. Additionally, the IR mode offers constant on or strobe. The shroud uses a single AA which will run the device for up to 14 hours.

A cool feature that Norotos has integrated into the design is that there is a small Red LED on the bottom of the shroud that shines while the IR mode is engaged so you will know it is on. The light is only visibie to the user.

Warrior Expo – DRIFIRE Search and Rescue Board Short

Friday, May 6th, 2016

I know we’ve talked about these FR Board Shorts from Drifire in the past but they’ve finally received NAVAIR approval.

I imagine you’re scratching your head over FR shorts but there’s a good reason. They were designed as a short that Rescue Swimmers coukd wear under their Drysuits and that’s why they are FR.

They are made from a 7 oz fabric with drirelease moisture wicking and odor control treatment. The shorts have a Velcro closure at the waist with adjustable waistband. There are also two bellowed cargo pockets with drainage holes.

Warrior West – Gerber Custom Fit Sheath

Friday, May 6th, 2016

The Gerber Custom Fit Sheath is an adaptive sheath system that will accommodate a wide variety of items as well as carry methods. The pouches are adjustable for height and width as well as retention. This is because it uses a combination of elastic and Velcro. One of the key features of the Custom Fit Sheath is the unidirectional Velcro which is called Quiet Deploy Velcro. You can adjust the height of the flap and tightness of the retention at the rear of the pouch.

It is available in both Dual and Quad versions. The Quad model is shown here amd it’s called a quad becuase each side has two slots, one in front of the other. This allows for a light and a knife, for example.

The pouch is fully PALS compliant but can also be attached to traditional belts.

Additionally, while these are made overseas, fully Berry compliant versions in Coyote are on their way.
