The Best I’ve Seen

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

I don’t often fall prey to Internet memes but this own spoke to me. Finding its inspiration from WW II British morale posters, it’s been modernized a bit.

What do you think?

Corps Strength – Plan to Win

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

The other day I was at the gym here on base (imagine that) and I noticed an overweight older man struggling with the cable rowing machine. Now normally I don’t bother anyone at the gym, but this poor guy’s form was so bad I thought that he might seriously hurt himself. So I went over to give him some help (disguised as small talk). After he caught his breath we struck up a nice conversation. He was new to the gym, having recently had a health scare and his doctor told to him he’d better “take charge” of his health before it got worse, so here he was. loafers, black socks, Bermuda shorts and all. Hey I give him a lot of credit, he was trying. So I asked him what his plan was. “Lose weight and get in shape” was his simple answer. “Well, I replied, How much weight do you want to lose, by when and what do you mean by, get in shape? Better yet what diet and workout routine are you going to follow?” To those questions he had no real answer. His somewhat confused response is very common, and one of the biggest reasons people fail to lose the weight they want and improve their health and fitness. No plan = No success. These things don’t just happen, you have to have a solid plan to follow and with that, long and short term goals to monitor your progress. In my book Corps Strength, I devote an entire chapter to planning. Trust me on this, Its important, and will take some thought to make it work. The famous Alabama football coach Bear Bryant once said: “I beat people with better teams than me all the time. Mostly because I plan better than they do.” So take some advice from the “Bear”, and before you lace up your running shoes, take the time to outline an effective plan to reach your fitness goals. A little planning will go a long way. Be safe and good luck!

Shellback Gear Used For Broadway Show

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

We got a note from Shellback Tactical that their Cobra Riggers Belt has been used by the Broadway Show ‘Spider Man – Turn Off The Dark.’ Here’s what Mike, the head honcho at Shellback told us. It’s interesting to see how tactical gear can be placed into other uses. It’s also good to see people outside the tactical industry appreciate American made quality.

I have received several orders from them and decided to look into it. I spoke to there stage manager over there and verified it with him. He was pleased to know that it was US made and did not realize it.

Interesting Info- Off the subject of Tactical for a minute- We recently discovered that our Shellback Tactical Cobra Buckle Riggers belt with Austri Alpin Buckle is being used behind the scenes of the Broadway Show Spider-Man Turn of the Dark. It is being used by the production crew/Stagehands to tie in when working while setting up when a Class 3 harness is not needed. We thank them for using our gear- It is nice to see a production such as this supporting Small Business- An American Company and USA Made Gear.

BOLO Report – Ammunition Cycling and Failure to Fire

Friday, February 17th, 2012

The BOLO Report posted a good article on repeated cycling of individual rounds of ammunition causing a failure to fire. The issue came to light after a Georgia-based officer had a failure to fire malfunction during a use of force incident. It was determined that the chambered round failed to fire due to the primer mix being knocked out of the primer during repeated cycling of the same round at night when he unloaded his weapon after work.

While it came to light during an LE incident, the situation is even more likely to occur with military ammo as troops are required to regularly unload their weapons. Oftentimes, that round goes right back into the top of the magazine it was removed from and this is accomplished over and over throughout the course of a tour.

It is important for personnel that do not regularly expend their ammo to rotate their cycled rounds.

Interested in a Slangvel from Slangvel?

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Right about now, the vast majority of you are scratching your heads asking yourselves, “What’s this “slangvel” you speak of? It is an Afrikaans word for “Snake Skin” and is used to describe the South African parachutist smock because the shoulders and elbows are reinforced with nylon webbing.

There’s also Slangvel, the manufacturer of things camouflage and cool. He has manufactured some of my favorite hats and while he has made Smocks in the past, he is working on getting a new Slangvel off the ground.

Here you see a South African brown (nutria) Slangvel next to a Badlands Slangvel to show how close he has kept the detail. He is in final sourcing for the proper snaps which is a major design detail on a Slangvel as they are exposed.

Although the sample is in PenCott Badlands he also plans on offering them in MultiCam and other patterns and solids as well. These will be initially offered in medium and large size. We’ll let you know when they are ready for order.

Canada Releases ISSP RFP

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Early this week, the Department of National Defence of Canada released a Request for Proposals for their next generation Soldier system. According to DND, “Integrated Soldier System Project will provide the soldier with an integrated suite of equipment that includes weapon accessories, electronic devices, sensors, individual equipment and operational clothing. This soldier system will significantly increase soldier performance, as soldiers and low-level command centres will seamlessly share data and voice communications through a network. This capability will facilitate effective and timely interaction. As a result, soldiers will have more comprehensive situational awareness, real-time tactical information and greater synchronization of activity.” What we’ve got here is a classic Soldier digitization program straight out of the 90s. It is another attempt to integrate sensors and comms onto the Soldier as a platform in order to increase Situational Awareness which will result increased survivability and lethality.

They intend to award two contracts to one successful bidder. According to the RFP these two contracts consist of:

The second contract, called the ISS Optimized Weapon System Support Contract, will be for the ISS In-Service Support and Improvement Activities over a period of five (5) years plus 3 two-year irrevocable options allowing Canada to extend the term of the Contract.

Potential offerors have until 2012-04-18 02:00 PM Eastern Daylight Saving Time EDT to submit their proposals. The ISSP RFP is available on Merx, the Canadian equivalent of FedBizOpps.
