SHOT Show 18 – Velocity Systems Scarab DLX

Friday, January 26th, 2018

The Scarab DLX is the latest addition to the popular Scarab armor carrier line From Velocity Systems.

As you can see, it is SwiftClip compatible. But also, front and rear, the vest utilizes Trilor Grid. It is PALS compatible and the triangular shape is stronger than standard slots. Additionally, it displaced more weight than standard laser cut slots. This full carrier only weighs 1.5 lbs dry.

It incorporates their patented swivel shoulder system.

However, the biggest thing about the Scarab DLX is the internal suspension system which is adjustable by the user for the amount of stand off from the body.

The mesh suspension offers cooling properties as well as an air gap between the armor and body. This air gap can really mean the difference when shot. It has resulted in up to 56% reduction in back face deformation during NIJ testing.

SHOT Show 18 – SureFire Optimized Bolt Carrier

Friday, January 26th, 2018

When we last told you about the SureFire Advanced Rifle Operating Core and Optimized Bolt Carrier we weren’t sure when it would be available commercially. But SureFire had the OBC on display at SHOT Show and told us the first run are just finishing up production.

0A7C7CCA-15A2-4982-A390-A49F84D0F101

While the entire AROC consists of an enhanced Bolt Carrier Group, Barrel Extension, Buffer and Spring, the OBC is a drop-in Bolt Carrier Group which fits both piston and DI ARs.

The OBC features an internal weight which is spring loaded in both directions. This, along with the other elements, combine to offer additional travel time. When the Bolt is at the end of its stroke while using a Mil-Spec BCG, it takes 28 milliseconds for the bolt to travel back into battery. With the OBC, it’s 38 milliseconds. That slight difference is signifigant, especially when firing full auto or suppressed, or both. You’ll also notice that the gas key has a single screw. It comes with a 2 oz H2S buffer and an included Action Spring offers additional tension.

Nammo Takes Ownership Position In MAC LLC

Friday, January 26th, 2018

Bay St. Louis. MS. January 26 2018, 08:00 CST.

Nammo is proud to announce that it has taken an ownership position in MAC LLC, a leader in the development and production of lightweight polymer cartridge cases for small and medium caliber ammunition.

Managing the weight of weapons and ammunition continues to be a major challenge for today’s armed forces, causing fatigue for individual soldiers, while reducing range and endurance for vehicles and aircraft. Responding to this challenge, MAC LLC has spent several years developing and commercializing lightweight, polymer-based solutions for military and aerospace markets, significantly reducing the weight of military ammunition products. Nammo, as one of the leading providers of specialty ammunition for military and commercial customers in the western world, believes that this technology will strengthen its ability to provide a reliable advantage to its customers.

Morten Brandtzæg, President and CEO of the Nammo Group says, “Our ownership position in MAC LLC is perfect for Nammo. Their technology and products are complementary to our product portfolio and we see a strong future for lightweight solutions. MAC LLC will strengthen our group’s strategic position in the US and international ammunition markets.”

Reijo Bragberg, Executive Vice President of Nammo Small and Medium Caliber Ammuniton says: “This is a very exciting opportunity for Nammo. We are now joining with a company that is the frontrunner in development of lightweight technologies, which are of great importance for our defense customers”.

Nick Malkovich, President of MAC LLC , “Supported by Nammo, MAC LLC will continue to develop technologies and support our troops with superior lightweight ammunition solutions. We are extremely satisfied to have Nammo as one of our owners. Nammo is well known for their high performance products and for being a reliable supplier of products that give advantage to US and allied customers. Nammo and MAC LLC are in many ways a perfect match.”

MAC LLC will continue to operate as they have, providing a leadership role in lightweight ammunition solutions, and will be an important partner in Nammo’s US growth plan going forward.

The acquisition has been reviewed and approved by the US government.

FirstSpear Friday Focus – Centurion Pant Sneak Peek

Friday, January 26th, 2018

This week we are giving you a sneak peek of the Centurion Pant, FirstSpear had outfitted their manakins with, on the SHOT Show floor.

The Centurion is FirstSpear’s first go at trousers and I like the design. It’s simple and doesn’t scream “tactical”. Outwardly, they look like any pair of Outdoor pants. In fact, FirstSpear envisions them as daily wear as well as for outdoor use.

One feature that is really cool is that the button waist closure is backed up by an adjustable Waist Band with a solid, no-slip buckle for use without a belt. The internal waist band is the same material as used in the Line 1 Belt, only thinner and slightly padded. The external belt loops are optimized for holster carry on or in the belt.

The front pockets incorporate nano stretch mesh while the rear patch pockets remind me of jeans.

In between, on either side, there is a Stretch Bridge Pocket which fits pistol magazine, flashlight, or knife/multi-tool.

Although not seen, the samples have an interesting feature I’ve never encountered before. Tucked in mesh pockets beneath where the sidearm and reloads are carried are removable Poron foam inserts for padding.

The knees are articulated and the crotch features a diamond gusset to enhance fit, mobility and comfort.

The fabric is 6.5 oz 50/50 NYCO ripstop. FirstSpear’s Jon Laplume describes it as on “intimate” blend, sharing that the nylon fibers are cut and textured to be the same length and texture as the cotton so that when it is spun into yarn you have an even texture throughout the fabric without a direction. Additionally, the cotton is combed rather than carded. This process is more difficult, but strips out any short or week fibers producing a better quality, stronger, and ultimately softer fabric. This fabric is more abrasion resistant than the 65/35 polycottons commonly used in Europe and also more breathable and cooler.

The Centurion Pant is sized like a military uniform trouser from Small through XXLarge. Likewise, there are Short, Regular and Long lengths. But, the hem is simple to make tailoring easier.

No word yet on final color offerings. However, the samples feature darker thread which highlights the body mapping design.

With the final product still a ways out, look for these sometime later this year from www.first-spear.com.

Meet Reptilia, Eric Burt’s New Company

Friday, January 26th, 2018

I’ve known Eric Burt for the past 10 years and watched him grow as a designer, specializing in firearms and accessories. He has worked for several industry leaders including AAC, Crye Precision, and Magpul.

A few months ago we met up in London where Eric told me he was going his own way and launching a new product focused company named Reptilia. He had started on the path a few years ago, but the plan was interrupted when took a position with Crye Precision so I was very excited to hear that he was ready to make this happen.

Eric and I spoke briefly yesterday about Reptilia. He already has a few designs finalized as well as a website and is seeking distributors. However, he told me he has an additional 25 designs all ready to go and will be pushing them out regularly.

He doesn’t want to build the same products as everyone else but rather fill niches in the market. So far, everything is customer driven and the products already built were requested by end users, while he was doing some freelance design work.

Eric left me with a rather ambitious vision.

As a company, Reptilia promises to uphold its standard of “Superiority Through Evolution,” providing unparalleled products and services. In an industry that is constantly evolving, Reptilia pledges to continually innovate, create, and bridge the gaps that challenge end users.

If anyone can do it, Eric Burt can.

Nemesis Arms has the ANSR to the SOCOM Advanced Sniper Rifle

Friday, January 26th, 2018

For the past 11 years David Ives at Nemesis Arms has been on the leading edge of innovation in the realm of modular precision weapon systems. Recently however, he became aware of the solicitation by SOCOM for their desired Advanced Sniper Rifle (ASR). Having already been awarded the patent for the only ambidextrous rifle capable of left and right-hand bolt change in a single receiver, he decided to take his products further and labor towards meeting the requirements of the ASR solicitation. Thus resulting in the Advanced Nemesis Arms Sniper Rifle (ANSR). The ANSR is a truly ambidextrous, modular, multi-caliber, tool less take down weapon system that takes precision rifles to the next level by using interchangeable magazine wells to facilitate the changing of calibers from .308 WIN to .300 Norma to .338 Norma.

Changing from short action to long action calibers is just scratching the surface of the capabilities of this unique weapon system. Like all of the precision rifles Nemesis Arms produces, the ANSR is the most modular and completely tool less weapon system on the market that weighs in at just over 12 lbs with the 24″ .338 barrel equipped.

The most defining characteristic of the ANSR undoubtedly the interchangeable magazine well to facilitate the switch from .308/.300 Norma to .338 Norma. The simple push button design can easily be changed out in seconds, and supports all commercial off the shelf magazines commonly used in most precision rifles today.

While many at first glance see just another modernized bolt gun, the ANSR is designed with the warfighter and law enforcement professional in mind. The modular and mutli-caliber design allow for the weapon system to be adapted to any mission within any environment with the most discreet employment of a precision weapon system possible.
