Persistent Systems, LLC, Awarded $25 Million Contract from US Air Force

Company to provide new radio hardware for convoy communications/situational awareness program

NEW YORK, N.Y. – April 08, 2020 – Persistent Systems, LLC (“Persistent”), developer of the Wave Relay® Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET), announced today that the U.S. Air Force awarded it a $25 million contract for the Wave Relay Tactical Assault Kit (WaRTAK) program. The refresh is expected to take four years.

The WaRTAK program, which began back in 2016, provides Air Force convoys driving in austere environments with reliable multi-domain communications and situational awareness. “It ties radio, GPS, cellular and satellite internet connections —everything—into our self-healing Wave Relay® MANET,” said Adrien Robenhymer, VP of Business Development for Persistent.

Ground vehicles, support aircraft and individuals using WaRTAK can see, communicate and coordinate with friendly units on TAK, a shared digital map for Android (ATAK) and Windows (WinTAK). They can also identify unknown or enemy vehicles that might prove a threat to strategic mobile Air Force assets via high-definition video or photos.

The WaRTAK program began because of a critical need for Rapid Innovation through the Air Force Research Lab, which Persistent has been supporting for years.

“WaRTAK uses our legacy MPU3 and Gen4 equipment. This hardware has been the backbone of the program, operating in extreme conditions and temperatures.” said Robenhymer. “But it’s time to introduce WaRTAK to the newest generation of gear.”

As part of the four-year contract with the Air Force, Persistent will provide the program with Android-loaded MPU5 smart networking devices and the Dual Push-to-Talk (PTT) system, which allow users to talk on two radio talk groups simultaneously and as an intercom system.

“The scheduled upgrade to Generation 5 hardware will bring a substantial increase in capability and reliability while reducing the size, weight and power on vehicles and dismount users,” Robenhymer said.

TTS: New Modular Sniper Rifle System in Bullpup Design

Thursday, April 16th, 2020

Dietingen/Nagold (ww): Tec Target Schneider – TTS – and their sales partner I-E-A Mil-Optics GmbH recently presented a new modular sniper rifle system in bullpup design at the GPEC show.

Several barrel lengths and calibers (currently 6 x 47 Lapua, 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Win, .300 Win Mag and .338 Lapua Magnum) as well as fore-ends of different lengths are available. The rifle can be operated from both sides and can be individually adapted to the shooter. It has a three-position safety (single shot, safe/lock chamber movable, safe/lock chamber locked), a match trigger, a rear monopod and is suspended on the adjustable bipod below the center of gravity. Stainless steel barrels and surfaces are mainly DLC-coated. The magazine capacity is five cartridges.

The modular design of the rifle allows the user to change barrels in different calibres and barrel lengths himself in a few minutes.

The advantage of the bullpup system is especially obvious in the precision shooting sector. The weapon retains compact dimensions despite its precision-suited barrel length. This allows the precision shooter to transport it more inconspicuously and to reach his position undercover. Furthermore, it is easier to shoot from cramped positions or vehicles.

TTS Managing Director Hubert Schneider learned his trade in the former Mauser factories in Oberndorf. In the Swabian cradle of German hand weapons technology, he was employed in the development department of Rheinmetall Waffe und Munition GmbH until his retirement.

Sales partner for the innovative TTS weapon systems is IEA Mil-Optics GmbH from Nagold. Orders can be placed now.

The TTS Xceed  is the result of many years of experience in the development and production of sports and precision rifles. A sniper system with a wide range of technical features, modular design and extensive adjustment options.

LBT x S&S Precision Teamup To Produce Medical PPE – Launch madeinthe757.org

Thursday, April 16th, 2020

In order to help alleviate shortages of medical PPE here in Hampton Roads, LBT Inc and S&S Precision have teamed up to produce these critical supplies.

Specifically, they are producing single-use Faceshields and reusable Face Masks. The vinyl face shield feature a closed cell foam liner and one-size-fits-all elastic headband.

While the masks are not an N95 or N95-equivalent and not designed to be a substitute for respirators, they are made from Milliken Biosmart fabric. This material incorporates a patented anti-microbial technology which enables the material to bind to chlorine in bleach when washed, creating an active barrier which kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. This defensive barrier is recharged with each wash in EPA-registered chlorine bleach. Sanitizing effects last up to 12 weeks with each wash and remains durable through at least 75 industrial wash cycles.

The masks also feature an internal pocket for replaceable air filters, they are designed to be worn by itself or over an N95 respirator as an additional barrier against fluids and airborne particles.

Early on, S&S Precision creates the trademark MadeInThe757 to show some pride in our local area and you see it adorned on many of their products. They had always hoped to expand its use to other companies in the defense industry and this was the perfect time to make it something bigger.

They launched the website www.madeinthe757.org to educate the public about defense against the COVID-19 virus and to showcase the equipment the team is producing.

Local hospitals have already placed substantial orders but the team is also making them available to the general public. Considering the CDC’s recent guideline change recommending individuals wear mask, this a welcome sight.

Orders of PPE in numbers below 100 are available through Tactical Distributors.

ARA – Augmented Reality Command Control Communicate and Coordinate RECON

Thursday, April 16th, 2020

During SHOT Show, Quantico Tactical ran me through several new technologies. The Augmented Reality Command Control Communicate and Coordinate or ARC4 was a special pleasure because I had served in the Air Force with the SME on hand. Nate Sanders was a Combat Controller and is now working for Applied Research Associates, Inc.

I really like ARA’s Augmented Reality technology. In fact, so does the Army who awarded them a contract last year.

Instead of looking down at a map and overlay while orienting it to the ground truth in front of you, ARC4 places the information from ATAK, day or night, within your field of view. Your head is in the battle space where it belongs.

Look at an area and you will see floating icons above targets, friendlies, routes, waypoints, and more in your field of view and they track 360 deg as you scan the horizon.

Below are demonstrations.

This COTS system integrates GPS, accelerometer, gyro, magnetometer, barometric presssure sensor as well as an EO camera. Output is via Day HUD or clipon for Visual Augmentation System, including Optics1’s ECOTI/ECOSI.

Don’t forget, ARC4 Recon is available for government users through Quantico Tactical.

IWA Is Cancelled For 2020

Thursday, April 16th, 2020

IWA OutdoorClassics will not take place in 2020

Due to the impact of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and its effects on the global economy, NürnbergMesse has decided not to hold the IWA OutdoorClassics in September 2020. The uncertain situation is imposing as yet unknown challenges on the industry and is causing a reduced willingness to invest, which is in turn associated with declining sales and production stoppages. At the same time, trade fair participants in many places are finding it difficult to plan and prepare their trade fair appearances due to business activity being limited by official order as well as international travel restrictions.

“We would specifically like to thank representatives of the sector for the many candid and constructive discussions we have had with them in recent days that have helped us make our decision. Our objective with the IWA OutdoorClassics is to create a special experience at international level for exhibitors and visitors and to facilitate the establishment and development of business relations. Unfortunately, the impact of the coronavirus crisis means that we cannot do this to our usual high quality standard,” explains Petra Wolf from the NürnbergMesse management board. Originally, some 1,550 exhibitors from 60 countries were expected to attend the IWA OutdoorClassics 2020; in 2019, the event welcomed more than 45,500 trade visitors from 120 countries.

Save the date: IWA OutdoorClassics in March 2021

The next IWA OutdoorClassics will take place from 12 to 15 March 2021. This means that the event is returning to its usual springtime schedule. “After this crisis the need for information and knowledge-sharing will be greater than ever. This is why we are now looking forward and setting the course for next year,” says Rebecca Schönfelder, Exhibition Director IWA OutdoorClassics. “The IWA OutdoorClassics 2021 will serve the industry as a platform for its global relaunch. “Due to travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus, the already announced IWA Customer Circle will probably not be able to meet for the first time to discuss the ongoing development of the IWA OutdoorClassics until early summer 2020. To ensure that exhibitors can reliably plan ahead in good time, the IWA OutdoorClassics 2021 will therefore be a trade-only fair closed to consumers.”
